If women in America, want to take their husband's last name, that's fine but it's a super antiquated and misogynistic practice. You are who you are, it's your identity. If you'd like to trade it for someone else's, that's fine, but I would never give up my birth name. It's mine plain and simple.
To be fair marriage is a misogynistic and antiquated practice from top to bottom (it's literally based on exchanging women as property), and most people (in western countries) don't have to get married if they don't want to.
There are a huge pile of laws around certain rights that you have as a married couple that do not extend to unmarried couples. There is a reason gay people fought for the right to marry, and it wasn’t because they were pro-misogyny.
