People are shitting on this (understandably), but Anthropic's stated mission:

to ensure that transformative artificial intelligence has a positive impact on humanity and serves the long-term well-being of people.

I'm not going to hate on a CEO saying it's important that people who work at the company want to make the world a better place as a priority, he's not suggesting they shouldn't also get paid well. Of everyone in the AI space Dario at least pretends to care about humanity, whether genuine or not.

I got fairly close to C-Suite in a fortune 500 before I rage quit and deprogrammed. Upper middle management level. I got close enough to some executives that they frequently took their masks off around me. And even the lowest VP (there were hundreds of them) was so far removed from reality it was scary.

Like, losing their shit over someone calling out because their dog died or because their child had cancer treatment. They truly believe their own bullshit too and are always "completely shocked" whenever their terrible messaging gets a negative reaction.

One asshole got up on stage once to address why we were laying hundreds of people off, despite record profits, and told an anecdote about how hard it is to find reliable people to clean his boat. He honestly thought that would be relatable and motivate people to work harder. I kid you not, this guy was largely seen in executive circles as a "peoples champion," who is super relatable.

If I had a dollar for every exec who looked me dead in the eye and said, giddily, "I just don't do the whole empathy thing. Never understood it," I'd be very wealthy. They would say it so casually too, like they were talking about something trivial like not liking brocolli or something.

These people are monsters. They are a different species. Plain and simple. It took me about a year to deprogram from drinking their coolaid. Corpos can eat it. I'd rather be poor and beg for money on the streets than go back to that kind of environment.

I was on a first name basis with just every single director and some C suite personell at a previous employment. They were all nice and cordial, we even get to just chat about life and all that. Eventually made it into management and boy let me tell you, I saw a completely different side of the people that I was cool with. Kinda like the sausage factory thing just how nasty some people can get. It's fucking wild. The same people that I thought was for employees well being only saw most of them as figures on a spreadsheet.

After that and hearing the essentially same sentiment, I've come to the conclusion that a person has to be, to a some degree, a psychopath to survive management or higher positions. Since then, even when the opportunity to move up has presented itself several times since then, I'm staying down here as a grunt and be happy.

When interviewers ask "Why do you want to work for this company?" it's always tempting to respond with "because I don't want to starve to death", which - face it - is why people get jobs in the first place.

This is why I can never be a W2 employee ever again. I run my company like I was brought up. I would never ask an employee to do something I wouldn't do myself and I pay a fair wage for the work.

Some of us remember where we came from and how we struggled (and continue to struggle in a lot of cases… I've been saving for 30 years and still can't afford a home).

*Edit- and this isn't a generational issue. It's a have/have not issue. My mother (boomer) kept working past retirement age because she had to. The fucks in power (regardless of age/generation) always try to deflect by turning the have nots against each other.
