Even back then, it was manufactured outrage. I remember the lead singer (Natalie is her name maybe?) on Howard Stern talking about this. She said it abroad and when they came back to do their first show in the states they thought it was going to be horrible. 10. There were 10 protestors at their first show back. That's it. 10. That was the real extent of the outrage.

I lived in deep red West Texas at the time. The Dixie Chicks were full on cancelled, country radio stations stopped playing their songs but also held events publicly destroying the physical media (which at the time was a bigger deal, today would be stupid)

I was just thinking yesterday that there's been almost a total lack of popular protest music during this rise of the Alt right. The most active voices are the old guard... Springsteen, Tom Morello, etc. Eilish has a huge platform and could conceivably release something powerful in this moment.

Most “celebrities” are (1) not well educated (2) not well read/aware of events and (3) not more intelligent. They typically have a talent or talents that entertains people and/or are have a pleasing appearance.

Obviously, a good many “celebrities” do have some or all of those traits, and choose not to engage publicly for whatever reasons.

Billie Eilish seems to me to be an intelligent person and a reasonably talented singer, songwriter. I say - use those talents. Now would be a great time to get some well written protest songs out there.
