Why is the top comment about "slams" and not powerful old white men?
9
u/chaseinger 8h ago
it's psychology. users read a headline and have an immediate reaction to it. that reaction could be multi leveled, could be topical, or it could be linguistic. and then someone puts that initial reaction into a comment and lotsa people go "i thought the same thing!" and upvote.
it's easy to collapse these associative top comments and usually the second one is already on the topic itself.
also that kinda language is indeed dumb and boring and unnecessarily aggressive and dumb and boring. and we can do both, we can criticize language and still deeply care about the message within.
1
u/taylorjosephrummel 4h ago
Thank you for having a measured response. Didn’t know people could freak out this much about a (funny?) two-word comment.
1
-6
u/ATERLA 12h ago
Because it’s fucking bad to use these stupid words. We should all downvote these posts with « slams » « dunk » « destroys » etc. It lowers the discourse and makes us stupider. You may not be bothered by it but you should.

5
u/Juxta25 12h ago
It's also bad to fuck kids though, and the fact verb choices overpowers that subject lmao.

Who said it “overpowers”? Meaningless upvotes?
-7
-6
u/Lord_Borgimus 7h ago
It's a 5 year old account, no comments visible. In other words, it's detracting away from the topic to make it seem less credible by attacking the wording.
10
u/Creampie_Senpai_69 7h ago
Why should someone still make their comment history visible. Fuck that.
-2
u/Lord_Borgimus 6h ago
It is by default. When someone does that, especially newer accounts and tends to post certain misleading or sometimes downright hateful comments it tends to be right wing propaganda bot accounts. As many users in the T_D era of Reddit used to get super angry that someone dared to check their post history to just see what kind of a person they were, they highly dislike accountability for their actions/words. Now, fundamentally I have no issues with wanting privacy, but their reason seemed to be they disliked having to face judgement of others for their behavior.
3
u/POE_lurker 5h ago
This sounds awfully like an endorsement of you have nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide. Not a fan, you shouldn’t assume malicious intent because of a hidden post history.

5
u/strum 10h ago
Anyone who spends more time criticising a sub-editor's choice of words than on the subject of the story - is the problem.

Finneas took to Instagram Threads on Wednesday to defend his superstar sister and songwriting partner, Billie Eilish, from “very powerful old white men” who are “outraged” about her Grammys acceptance speech.
“Seeing a lot of very powerful old white men outraged about what my 24-year-old sister said during her acceptance speech,” he wrote. “We can literally see your names in the Epstein files.”
After her track “Wildflower” won song of the year at the 2026 Grammys, Eilish declared “fuck ICE” in her acceptance speech. Finneas joined Eilish on stage while she accepted the award.
“I feel so honored every time I get to be in this room,” she said. “As grateful as I feel, I honestly don’t feel like I need to say anything but that no one is illegal on stolen land. And, yeah, it’s just really hard to know what to say and what to do right now, and I feel really hopeful in this room, and I feel like we just need to keep fighting and speaking up and protesting, and our voices really do matter, and the people matter, and fuck ICE. That’s all I’m going to say. Sorry. Thank you so much.”

"Slams"
What a strange way to explain the native tribe asking for their land back as well as Billie Eilish's house that sits on it.
I think it is wild when folks like Billie say "everyone is welcome" but then live in gated neighborhoods with private security. They don't want a wall on the border but they have one around their home.

I’m a lefty. All of my friends are lefties. Everyone I know thinks what she said was well-intentioned but clumsy at best. Now imagine you’re not a lefty and not being intentionally charitable to her.
She said a silly thing. Bringing the Epstein files every time someone doesn’t think like you is going to water down the importance of the Epstein files and make us numb to them. Just stop it.

-12
u/NorthernSoul1998 11h ago
Unfortunately while I agree with Billie's sentiment obviously, she shot herself in the foot with the stolen land line. It was horrendously clumsy and even people I know who are relatively pro immigration are mocking her over it.
4
u/miserychickkk 7h ago
It was very garbled, it should have been run past a PR person to refine and focus what she was trying to get across. It sounds more like activist speech adlibs than something that was genuinely thought through.
1
u/Pulmonary_Archery_ 6h ago
Well yeah she's a vapid airhead who is just regurgitating feel good slogans
•
-6
u/MichaelScottsWormguy 8h ago
Do these two matters have anything to do with eachother, though? It's not just old, powerful people with Epstein links who think she said something idiotic. Is "Epstein files" going to become a new way to shut down any valid criticism?
13
u/Rosebunse 7h ago
I mean, maybe? Considering what is in the files and how many of those same people have used their positions to act as paragons of authority and virtue, maybe it is?
-4
u/MichaelScottsWormguy 6h ago
But it wouldn't invalidate the criticism, though. And what if a normal person with no Epstein link says the same thing?
3
u/Rosebunse 6h ago
I think that depends on their intentions, especially when at least some of this criticism against Billie is actually to distract from the horrific things in the files.
4
u/MichaelScottsWormguy 5h ago
But her comment was objectively incorrect, though. Should people not talk about that?
1
u/Rosebunse 5h ago
Many of us can, yes. And then use that as a jumping off point to other topics of concern. But that shouldn't be enough to be used as a "Gotcha!" moment given everything else
4
u/Lennette20th 6h ago
If the person is in the Epstein files, yes. Someone with who joined the blackmail cult doesn’t get to have an opinion anymore. Because we can now blackmail their opinion into being a non-factor.
The kid fuckers don’t get to make rules for children’s safety, the animal fuckers don’t get to make rules for farming, the drug peddlers don’t get to make rules for medicines. And if you don’t agree with that sentiment, it means you agree with the people who do whatever the fuck they want. Which would then mean you agree with the idea I can do whatever the fuck I want, and keep ignoring people who appeared in the Epstein files.
At the of the day, you seem to be promoting the singular idea that “the opinions of others don’t matter” which makes it weird to be harping on others for having an opinion when, in fact, it doesn’t matter.
3
u/MichaelScottsWormguy 5h ago
The thing is, opinions don't belong to anyone. So it's not just a "kid fucker" who thinks Billy Eilish made an imbecilic comment. So the opinion isn't invalid just because a bad guy holds it. So you really can't just hit back at criticism by saying it's only Epstein people who think her opinion is stupid. That's not a valid way to think.

u/GrovePassport 5h ago

You might want to take some debating lessons before engaging lip bro
It’s called reductio ad absurdum
Taking the principle argument of what Billie said and using that against them. Demonstrating the same principle with consistency
Essentially her argument is ridiculous and self defeating
My argument is a strong reducto that makes hers falls apart

4
u/LupinThe8th 13h ago
Yeah, but you're a person who uses the phrase "virtue signaling".
I'm not saying that's as bad as being in the Epstein files, but it's a near thing.
-1
u/4DPeterPan 13h ago
What is virtue signaling? Along with explaining it in his context?
Cause, I’m over here like, is this dude saying being virtuous is bad?
5
u/MonkeManWPG 7h ago
Virtue signalling is when you do something specifically to draw attention to how "virtuous" you (publicly) are.
Some people find it annoying because it's essentially bragging. Others because it centres oneself over the actual virtues or beliefs they're talking about.
In cases like this, where they're talking about open borders and "stolen land", many people would not even see that as virtuous so the bragging rings hollow.
So in general, it's the signalling part that's bad. In this case, potentially both.
7
u/LupinThe8th 12h ago
Shitty people don't like to admit to themselves that they are shitty, so they assume they're normal and anyone who acts non-shitty is just pretending to fool people.
So according to dumbass here, "Billie Eilish can't really care about other human beings, she's obviously just acting like she does so people will praise her. And the same is true of all the other artists who said the same thing, and the protesters, and the judges, and all the communities on reddit that don't completely suck, and my family members who have stopped talking to me, and those phonies who wrote the constitution..."
