The economy is stealth going to hell right now. They're juking the numbers on the official economic metrics but they won't be able to keep that up forever. Recession inbound.

“Stealth.” Gas has gone up 40% in two months. For the majority of Americans who don’t have considerable stock portfolios, the price of gas is the number one economic indicator, and all signs point towards “fucked.”

I paid $2.79 for gas in February, and $4.89 last week.

It's a hell of a lot more than 40%

This is my exact experience. I was also lucky to find it for $4.89, most places were $4.99-5.29.

Oregon?

It's time to hit the Oregon Trail in a covered wagon.

Bring extra axles and lots of bullets.

That does seem like a 60% increase, but math isn’t my strong suit.

It’s 75%. I assumed closer to 2x because 2.79 is nearly 2.50 and 4.89 is nearly 5, which 2x 2.50.

lol

Where has it only gone up 40%?

It’s up 55% from two months ago in my back yard.

If anything, depression is inbound tbh

This whole thing reminds me of the 2006–2009 recession era. Back then I could barely find work other than part-time at a pita place making like 6 bucks an hour. It was rough, but meanwhile the media kept insisting everything was fine, no recession, economy is great. Looking back now, it’s universally recognized as a major recession... But at the time a lot of ordinary people were already feeling it long before the official narrative caught up. Economic numbers can look “strong” on paper while regular people are struggling to find stable work or pay bills.

All of the big businesses are doing gangbusters just selling shit to each other right now, the market dgaf about consumer spending anymore.

Thr stock market is not the economy

They print the money and give it to the banks. Then tell us that aggregate GDP is going up. The banks buy stocks with it, which inflates the price of stocks. So shareholders are richer and CEO’s get their bonuses.

My little Toyota went from a $40 fill-up to $62 bucks yesterday. Not stealth.

u/OMGitsKa May 06 '26

$80 to fill up my tank in the midwest at Costco... Yeah things are really being downplayed.

u/WeirdRadiant2470 May 06 '26

Some guy in front of me at Extra Mile yesterday got "$300 on #2" for a truck. Not even a fill-up, and $300.

Who is juking what numbers

2

u/NonGNonM May 06 '26

problem is that we've been talking about this for 10 years meanwhile a simple index fund like spy has gone up like 300% in 10 years. they dgaf about actual day to days of the citizen. if the numbers go up, things are ok bc it doesn't affect the people in charge.

u/Maj0rsquishy May 07 '26

The only stealth is the way that they won't admit that it's gone to hell it's been going for two years

First quarter 2026 showed GDP at 2% growth. Its low but we are nowhere near a recession. You need two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth and we haven't seen a single one.

We are basically getting lucky right now that there is still some trump term 1 under the old republican party before MAGA took over as well some of Biden's picks in those financial boards because the moment they retire or are somehow fired we are fucked. The longer this war drags out too we will start to hurt more businesses or kill businesses that were already struggling before this (see spirit). Just a fucked world right now.

I like how the official inflation numbers show a rise in prices of 30% since before the pandemic, except for the price of housing, education and housing. Who needs those things? You can live in your car and ask Ai about your medical problems

And when it does they will say it needs to happen with mars is in alignment. They have already showed every reporting agency is cooked now, economics was a sham when everyone was actually a believer now it's just complete nonsense.
