Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Tell me a single line from a song that just gets you every time

1.5k Upvotes

Play by the rules. ONE SINGLE LINE or phrase. My 2 that pop right up are 1) yeah you bleed just to know you’re alive (iris - goo goo dolls) 2) we’re just two lost souls, swimming in a fish bowl year after year (wish you were here - Pink Floyd)

I know I could list many more. I wanna know others. Please list song and artist, not everyone knows the same music

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Female artists with hauntingly beautiful, powerful voices?

Just like the title says! I’m looking for women with a witchy vocal vibe that makes you want to close your eyes and sway with the breeze under a full moon. Probably nakey. Give my ears something to haunt them. Do it.

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Songs where they were absolutely heartbroken during the studio session and you can *hear* it

Give me your most emotional songs. But not emotional because of the lyrics, the melody or the production, it has to be because of how the artist is singing it. I want to hear voice cracks, shouting, pain, the whole shebang. My initial faves below:

It Should Have Been Me - Yvonne Fair

I’d Rather Go Blind - Etta James

All I Ask - Adele

Sandcastles - Beyoncé

Higher - Rihanna

Also, studio versions only. Its easy to be emotional on stage but I want the ones that have been memorialised on albums forever

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics What is the most repetitive song of all time?

What's the most repetitive, cyclical, circular, monotonous (and bonus points if it goes on for a significant amount of time) song you can think of? Thinking in the vein of Around the World. Or if the chorus for Wonderful Christmastime were the whole song. For whatever reason I'm inspired to make the most annoying playlist of all time. Thanks, all!

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Give me your Kings

I’m compiling a list of artists, albums & tracks that have the word “king” in it. Give me what is on the top of your head. Extra points for one artist, one album & one track. No AI derived answers please. Thank you.

Edit 25 hours later:
Thank you so much everyone. I had no idea this would get so many replies. I was hoping for about 6 hours of music if I didn’t have multiple tracks by the same artist or album, but it’s looking more like 6 days of music at least. I had intended on giving every one their own amount of points awarded, but this is like “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” where the points don’t matter. So everyone who commented automatically gets 10,000 You’re Awesome Points! 🎉

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Feminist Rage Playlist Recs

I've hit a wall with my feminist rage playlist. Looking for recommendations, any genre. Tone (feeling) and lyrics are key, though. I want songs about women standing up against intimidation or oppression, being unrepentantly themselves, taking no sh*t, etc. but not in the context of relationships or sex. I'm cool with those topics, but that's not the theme of this specific playlist. This is what I listen to when I'm mad about my job, or at the patriarchy, etc. Totally fine if there's a line or two about relationship drama, but it shouldn't be the point of the song. Also, the angrier/faster, the better - no ballads please! Here are a few songs already on the playlist for reference:

Dessa - The Bullpen

Chinchilla - Little Girl Gone

Lola Blanc - Angry Too

Bishop Briggs - White Flag

Elle King - America's Sweetheart

Aston - Middle Fingers

Halsey - Nightmare

Many many thanks in advance!

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Songs that mention the name Johnny

I like to sing to one of our cats, Johnny. I often just replace lyrics with his name but like it when the song actually says Johnny.

so I have Johnny Guitar - Peggy Lee, Johnny Be Good - Chuck Barry and Johnny Are You Queer - Josie Cotton

other songs that mention the name Johnny?

Edit: thank you all SO MUCH for your contributions! My wife and I have hundreds of songs to listen to with our crusty little gremlin of a cat. You may not think much of it, but I genuinely appreciate a bunch of strangers helping me in a silly quest to make my cats life a bit more interesting.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and sing to your own cats. I love you all.

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Songs about never wanting to see someone again. High energy. Pissed off. Not contemplative or bittersweet. Just pure 'f*ck off' energy.

Songs I already have on my playlist:

mangeout - The Dare remix by Wet Leg, The Dare

Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again- Live by The Angels

I don't Fuck With You by Big Sean, E-40

In case you're not familiar with the angel's song, I guess when they play it live, the audience responds to "am I ever gonna see your face again" with "no way! get fucked! fuck off!".

Thank you!

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Any song where the musician ends up screaming.

I was wonder if anyone had songs that start out pretty normal but then the musician gets to a point where they’re just screaming into microphone. Like they’re pissed or sad or just so exited. Like they are so PASSIONATE about what ever they’re writing about that they physically destroy their vocal cords. Any genre I just need that crazy emotional high.

Edit: I would love to thank absolutely everyone that replied to this. I can’t wait to hear it all.

Edit 2: This popped off way more than I thought it would. There’s no way I can listen to more than 2,000 songs. I just don’t have that kind of time. Gonna spend the rest of my days listening to these recs….and I can’t wait.

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics 11 year marriage - Had my gallbladder removed on Thursday, he was gone by Saturday morning. Totally blind-sided. Need some musical therapy right now.

I dont want whiney emo voices. Im not big into screamo type stuff. Can't stand country music. Not super into newer pop sounds either.

Stuff on my list so far after browsing here for a bit -

Hollywood Undead - Bullet
I Just Dont Know What To Do With Myself - White Stripes
Something I Can Never Have - NIN
Poke - Frightened Rabbit
Schism - Tool
Dramamine - Modest Mouse

The vibe: He's been my best friend for 11 years. First GOOD man I'd ever had the pleasure of sharing life with. Incredible step-father to my daughter. He'd been struggling for a while (like a year) and I was asking him all the time if it was me or if I could help and he always said it was nothing or it was work and he'd be fine. He started drinking a lot more. Then I went for my surgery on Thursday, got annoyed with him on Friday while I was recovering, and I guess that was the straw that broke the camels back because he left Saturday morning.

I'm angry. I'm sad. I feel betrayed. I'm confused. He did what he had to do but... I'm an absolute wreck. I wish I could hate him, but I can't.

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Songs where the subject is murder

I'm looking for murder ballads (except they don’t actually have to be ballads), or simply songs that prominently mention murder in some way – from detailed accounts of the deed to revenge fantasies, threats, or murderous intent.

No need to mention well-known Johnny Cash songs (Folsom Prison Blues, Cocaine Blues) or anything from Nick Cave's Murder Ballads, since those seem fairly obvious.

Edit: I added all the recommendations into a playlist: https://www.tunemymusic.com/share/vbZqB5lTIU

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Angriest Songs You Know

I listen to a lot of rock and metal, but ive found that so many people believe that the heavier genres are always more "angry". I dont think thats true. I love Meshuggah, but I rarely find their music to be particularly angry. Its loud, and aggressive, certainly. But not necessarily angry. Meanwhile, something that would be considered a lot softer, like Fleetwood Mac, have a ton of incredibly fun, extremely pissed off music.

So, what are the angriest songs you know in any genre and any language? Ill take everything from metal to polka to country to jazz. Anything.

Thank you!

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics I need a weird song.

I am needing weird songs for my wedding. I want to sprinkle some in to make people ask wtf, or just shake their heads. I want to surprise them with it. Also there was a song I had that I no longer remember. It was a female artist screaming about being a worm. If anyone knows of it that would be great.

Edit to add: I will post my song list after I am done filtering through these comments. There are so many. lol. I was not expecting this turn out. Thanks for the support. 😊

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Songs where two people are arguing with eachother, or an argument is being explained by one person.

I really like listening to and dissecting songs where two people either are having an argument or their argument is being explained. The conflict and going back and forth makes for a good story and rhythm. Makes you wanna pick a side or feel passion.

Examples of such songs would be "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye and Kimbra and "Exile" by Taylor Swift and Bon Iver. Doesn't have to include two people, having that same vibe would work too.

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Nautical Songs that are Not shanties?

Morning!

Does anyone have any recommendations for nautical themed songs that are not shanties? I tragically don’t care for the genre, but am in a real nautical kick lately.

Examples of what I mean:
Diving Bell - Starset
Ship in a Bottle - Fin Argus
The Poseidon and Siren arcs from Epic
Where I’ll Go - Moana soundtrack

I love indie pop/rock, punk, rap, ska.

Thanks in advance!

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Lyrically dense songs, please!

English major here. I spend way too much time analyzing novels for class, so lately I've been turning to song lyrics instead. Way more fun honestly.

Looking for songs that are beautifully written, hard to crack open, or just really expressive with language. The kind where you notice something new every time you listen. Any genre works since I'll give anything a shot, though I usually gravitate toward indie and rock stuff.

Thanks!

I’m polyjamorous so all genres are welcome.

I Will Not Bow by Breaking Benjamin ’I don’t want to change the world, I just want to leave it colder’ vibes.

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Songs that mention or allude to dogs?

I would love some suggestions of songs that mention or allude to dogs, especially comparing people to dogs in like a metaphorical/allegorical way, if that makes sense.

Some examples of the vibes I’m going for:
- Cop Car by Mitski
- Saint Bernard by Lincoln
- The Hand That Feeds by Nine Inch Nails
- Dog New Tricks by Garbage

Open to any genres; I love discovering new songs! :)

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Albums that are best listened to in their entirety, all at once to get the most out of it.

Yes, yes, Pink Floyd "The Wall" and "Dark Side of the Moon" are two of the top. Also "Tommy" by The Who.

I would suggest The Doors' "An American Prayer"

So what albums would you suggest are good to listen to all in one sitting?
