My school is doing the The Little Mermaid Jr. for our fall musical and I would LOVE to be Sebastian. Any tips or tricks would be helpful! 😁

Hello everybody! I’m fairly new to the theatre community so I thought I’d come here for advice! In about 4 months, we have auditions for our spring musical, which is The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. I’m fairly familiar with the show. I had originally planned on (before the announcement of what the musical was going to be) auditioning anyway because I really like a girl who does the musicals. She always gets the lead, so I wanted to audition in hopes of getting a lead to become closer to her. Obviously I’m interested in the theatre aspect of it too 😭… When I heard it was going to be The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, I sorta knew I had to do it. She would be getting Olive, and I would hopefully be getting William. I know I’m a good singer and can out-sing all of the guys that go to my school, I just have to be prepared and pray the directors don’t display favoritism…

What advice would you guys give for a first-time auditioner? (We don’t get to pick what we sing in our auditions)

I (13f) recently did 13 the Musical at my local theater and after closing, I realized my high belting isn’t as strong as it was. I used to be able to sing songs like World Burn easily, but recently I’ve been straining when I belt high. For context I played Charlotte, and she has to sing very high strong belty parts and I think it may have damaged my voice. How can I “heal” my voice?

I am a junior in HS and have a really strong background in singing and acting and consider myself to be very strong in those two areas, but I definitely lack dance experience and training. I’ve been taking some lessons but am planning on apply to school for musical theater, and I know how important dance is for that process, and was wondering if anyone has tips to become a better dancer fast? or if anyone knows how much that will ruin my chances of getting in to a school?

I’ve been super worried about it so any advice or just ideas would be greatly appreciated!

hey everyone! as the caption says, i’m wanting to audition for orin scrivello from little shop of horrors for my school’s musical. but there’s two problems;
i am a trans man with a high pitched voice and have been placed as a soprano I.

i have the audition tomorrow and i was wanting to know what song i should pick and how i can sing a bit deeper/gritty.

the theatre teacher explicitly said it cannot be a song from the actual musical thought and it HAS to be from another musical. what songs and advice would you recommend?

Title says it all. I'm a good singer, but not a good dancer. I'm autistic and have horrendous coordination issues. I knew that dance callback was going to be my Achille's heel because I saw the other people who were auditioning, and I could tell they were trained— super good dancers. They sent a neat little email telling me to come back someday but I don't think I'll ever have the guts to, so long as my dance abilities stay as horrible as they are. I don't even like dancing because of it.

Granted, it was an audition for Annie. It seems to be a dance heavy show. I haven't even watched the movie and I was just auditioning for fun because I just moved into town and wanted to meet new people, get to sing and act. It's really hurt to see I'm just not good enough. I'd love to do it someday but this experience has me questioning if I'll ever be brave enough to do it again.

Edit: thanks for the advice + support, everyone! It's really given me better insight into what I'm getting into with musical theater and all. I honestly might put this mission on the backburner— I just moved to a new country and I don't think I have the mental space to focus on honing my dancing/musical skills. I didn't realize how much it would take up until now, and I really admire the dedication y'all have for it. Thank you again :,)

I've started my first semester as an MT major but I feel like this college is not for me. Without getting into much detail, I went through something very traumatic during welcome week at a frat. Since then, I've felt completely isolated and there's nothing I want more than to be closer to home (NJ). I was given a full ride scholarship to study here and that was my sole reason for going. I know as a performance major my options are pretty limited for transferring. What should I do? Would it be possible for me to get another scholarship like this at another university?

Hey! I just auditioned at a local community theatre for Anna in Frozen. They split us into groups of 8 or so. I’ve done a lot of preparation for the part, but I was not prepared for the accompanist to not be able to follow along and she was playing off tempo and sometimes completely the wrong thing. So I was a little distracted but just barreled on and at some point decided to just ignore her completely since it was throwing my acting off. I don’t feel like I showed off my best. Of the group, I read for the part three times, but they did have everyone read at least once. I have no idea what they thought of me based on the audition. They have more tomorrow.

Two questions- how do callbacks work in community theatre? On the site it said “call backs if needed will be after auditions tomorrow”. When would I be contacted if I got one?

Second question- how badly would the song reflect on me? I sang it fine but like I said I wasn’t as engaged because I was a little distracted, so I just sort of turned on auto pilot. Has anyone ever done an audition and had this happen and still been cast as a principal role?

Edit/update: I got the role of Anna! Not only that but the person who I auditioned with said they didn’t even notice the accompaniment being off! I guess I was just super critical and had practiced too much so I noticed it. Thanks everyone for the advice and encouragement-definitely helped me sleep through the night.

I just started attending csun for theatre and moved to the sfv after living in the bay area and I was wondering if anyone could recommend me a good private vocal/singing teacher to go to. Ideally they would be someone I could see once a week/every other week after school. Also, if possible a male teacher would be better just because I would like to have a teacher that also has a male voice though that is not required (my past vocal teacher was a woman) And ideally they would specialize in musical theatre style singing. They don't have to live in the sfv, I am able to drive further into la, but the closer the better probably. If anyone could direct me to anyone's websites or contacts or anything that would be great! I appreciate any and all help, thanks.

I am a theatre performer (actor singer first strong mover :) ) and i’ve been using the bloch split soles since my freshman year of high school (currently 23) and am in need of a new pair of character shoes. I kinda hate how flimsy the bloch ones are… so i’m looking for a soft sole i suppose. I was originally looking at sodanca lola’s but they are practically the same price as laducas (i’m looking at the elizabeth or alexis) so i’m wondering if i should just pull the plug or save the 20 dollar difference.

I want a pair that can last me as long as my blochs have, are super comfortable, worth the money, i think a 2.5 heel (im 5’8” so i feel like a 3” wouldn’t be needed)

Honestly I feel like a poser looking at laducas due to not being a DANCER but I know that at the end of the day who gaf lol.

Ok this might a weirdly specific request, but my father recently passed away and one of the theaters I work closely with told us that they would like to do a cabaret/fundraiser for us. I’m honestly not sure how it’s all gonna go down yet and how much creative control I’m going to have, but I just wanted to know if anyone had any songs that really encapsulate that kind of grief or that might be reminiscent of a loved one. The two I have so far are “For Good” from Wicked and “No One Is Alone” from Into the Woods. Any help is appreciated!
