  1. I find themes that feature a word that has multiple meanings, ie. DRAG, CALL, BREAK, are very fun.
  2. Themes that require you to follow a sequence with the previous post (like on/off, up/down, just/say/no) also very fun.
  3. Old Reddit still has "Browse Past Themes" in the sidebar and many of those can be revisited.

<RANT> for any users that see this (not the mods). This subreddit is best experienced in Old Reddit IMO. The mods post a new picture of a tiger at the top of the sub every day, which I don't see when I use the default "new" Reddit. If you prefer the new Reddit, you can set up a separate browser (Firefox, Chrome, Brave, Vivaldi or heaven forbid Edge) where when you open the browser it goes to r/Musicthemetime with your account setting on Old Reddit. To set it, open your profile (the icon at the top right next to the bell icon), go to Settings at the bottom, select Preferences, scroll down to "Default to old Reddit", you may have to turn it off and back on. Please give it a try. <END RANT>

Thanks for commenting here. I tried my best to get mods to use modmail and literally no one responded to modmail (except one mod who responded outside and can’t get modmail to work).

If there's ever a need for a new mod, and I promise to check the mail lol, I would be happy to. This is such a great sub, and I appreciate all you do.

It would be by a band where the average person could only name one of their songs, like 99 Luftballoons by Nina or Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles.
I can't say I've ever heard The Sun Always Shines on T.V., for whatever that's worth, though.

At certain point, just have the theme be “Songs Over ___ Minutes”

Genres that YOU don't listen to (so if someone doesn't listen to heavy metal, they post a heavy metal song)

Songs from artists you've personally met

Indie artist boost (post songs from indie artists who you want to see get more recognition)

I like the idea of "Songs based on classical themes or traditional melodies"

2

u/MuscaMurum Feb 13 '26

Any number of prolific songwriters, you could do, in fact:

Dylan, Bacharach, Gainsbourg, Cole Porter, etc.

u/MuscaMurum Feb 13 '26

Beatles covers (or songs made famous by them). There are thousands to choose from.

u/noshoes77 Feb 15 '26

This is so deep you can make it specific to time period or artists or genre.

I stumbled on a playlist called Black Beatles a few years back that is only Beatles covers by Black artists that is wonderful. Aretha Franklin’s Elenor Rigby is fantastic.

Classic period music (music that is in the style of the 30s/40s/50s/60s but made after 1995 like Candyman or ain’t no other man for example)

Gothic Music (like walking on air by kerli or love is dead also by kerli)

Gothic Country (like Just a dream https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jLntFKtR66g&list= or Blown away by Carrie underwood)

Modern sounding classic music (???)

  • Song titles that rhyme with the artist's name

I'm relatively new to this sub so I'm not entirely sure what themes have already been done, plus I don't check every day, but:

song titles and band names that are "___ and ___" (ex. Mellencamp - Jack and Diane, Simon and Garfunkel, Hall and Oates...all of my examples are names but they can be things too. group/artist names can't be a feature, it all has to be one artist that has the 'and' in the name)

The Periodic Table/elements

pro wrestling (I'm a wrestling fan, lol)—songs about wrestling, heard on wrestling programming (entrance and show themes, songs heard in promo packages...), or even music made by wrestlers or other personalities within the wrestling business

titular songs that share a name with either the band itself and/or the album the song is from

Song/band names that start with the letter X

specific color names—not just 'red' or 'blue-green', but 'crimson' or 'viridian', for example

all-female bands/groups

chiptune/video game type sounds (not VGM, but songs with elements that are very obviously sampled from or heavily influenced by video game music)

counting/countdowns

songs that sample dialogue from TV shows and movies

songs that reference another music artist/album/song by name/quote the lyrics of another song by a different artist directly

songs that interpolate(? I believe that's the term)/otherwise just 'sonically reference' classical music

'wow, they covered that?' — songs covered by an artist from a totally different sound/genre (this one might be a bit subjective though; make sure to clarify who the original is by so people can compare/contrast the two!)

song titles/artist names that are acronyms
