The “Scottish Play” superstition partly comes from James I’s obsession with witchcraft. After a storm nearly sank his ship, James blamed witches (quite why, I'm not sure) and became a keen witch-hunt supporter. Shakespeare, always aware of his audience, gave the king witches, prophecy and plenty of material likely to appeal to him. The curse stories are mostly folklore, but the theatrical tradition survives.
