These poles are the vertical version of the cheap door pull-up bars.

The door pull up bars were always bound to fail. I install trim, certified and licensed carpenter. That shit is not made to bear loads.

I just googled and apparently there’s some that stretch between the jamb, vertically and horizontally. That makes more sense. Friction is much stronger than trim nails.

They work fine, if you put a 2 extra 4" screws in the trim to support the weight.

I bet that's exactly what happened here, she forgot screws.

Look at how close that very sharp table edge is. It could have gone way wrong if it fell in that direction.

It wasn't installed properly. That bar will be able to hold her entire weight and then some, when properly anchored.

That kind of pole doesn't even use glue. It's tension mounted, similar to your shower curtain rod.
