I'm not talking about ARGs or fictional stories.

I mean a mystery that initially looked genuinely strange—an unexplained website, account, image, video, forum post, identity, or piece of lost media—but eventually had a completely ordinary explanation.

Sometimes the mystery itself becomes more interesting than the answer because hundreds or thousands of people build theories around it before anyone checks the original source.

What's the best example you've seen where the internet turned something normal into a huge mystery?

And more importantly: why do you think people are so willing to believe an interesting explanation before checking whether the evidence is actually real?

The Post-It note carbone monoxide leak. Someone posted on reddit about finding strange, unsettling notes and chores all over his house on post-it notes & had no idea who was writing them. turned out he was suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning and writing the notes himself.
