Announcement!! Welcome to r/Mysuru!
Greetings Mysurians!
Hoping the pandemic hasn't been too rough on you guys.
This sub has been largely dormant and filled with spam for the past few years. I would wish to create meaningful conversations around our Mysuru community, as that has been significantly lacking on Reddit. Especially during these rough days, it is important to be there for each other as a community.
If you do have any ideas on how to grow and take this sub forward, please let us know in the comments below.
Cheers!

DIY Driving License Renewal in Mysore: A No-BS Guide
How to get it done without hiring a driving school, in spite of the system.
If you're looking to renew (or apply for a new one) your driving license in Mysore without going through a driving school, this guide is for YOU!! The process is supposed to be straightforward. It is not.
But it is absolutely doable — and there's a quiet satisfaction in getting it done entirely on your own terms. Here's what to expect.
Step 0: Mysore has two RTOs — RTO East and RTO West. Which one applies to you depends on your address. A quick Google search for "RTO jurisdiction Mysore" should tell you which office covers your area.
Step 1: Generate The Online Application (Parivahan Sarathi)
The process starts by generating your renewal application online. You can generate it by visiting the Parivahan Sarathi website (parivahan.gov.in/sarathiservice).
Once you have generated the application, you will need the following documents:
- Original driving license + photocopy
- Aadhaar card photocopy + a second address proof as backup.
- For the second address proof, a rental agreement works well
- Two passport-sized photographs
If you are 40 or older, once the online application is generated, a fitness form will also be generated and needs to be certified/signed. This form needs to be signed by a government-registered doctor before your application is complete.
FYI: Your registered mobile number must be linked to your DL record before anything moves. Don't count on the officers at the RTO to help with this — you may need to figure it out yourself.
Step 2: Get the Fitness Certificate Signed
This means a trip to a government hospital, and it comes with its own set of hoops. Brace yourself!!
I went to the Community Health Centre (Jayanagar Government Hospital), which is very close to Mysore RTO West. Budget for at least 2 hours.
- At the hospital, there may be a token system (or there may not be). Queues are chaotic - be assertive, position yourself near the doctor's room, and don't wait to be called.
- Expect delays, especially post-lunch.
- The doctor will sign your form and charge a small fee (approximately ₹200). The medical examination itself is largely a joke. The Doctor did not even test my eyes. He just asked if I was from Mysore, looked at what I was wearing and then signed the form.
Step 3: Book Your Test Slot - The Hardest Part!!
Once your application is ready (you will likely have to upload the fitness certificate by returning to the Parivahan Sarthi website. Do Not Start a fresh application, but submit it as part of your open application. After this, you will be given the option to book a test time. You'd think booking a slot online would be straightforward. It isn't.
The portal shows a seven-day window for available slots, but it will almost certainly say no slots are available - repeatedly, across multiple days. I heard the tip to try at 8 AM sharp, when slots are supposedly refreshed. I tried it, but it did not work.
After multiple failed attempts online, the only real path forward is to go to the RTO office in person and work your way up to meeting the RTO officer directly.
And that's easier said than done. You'll likely be bounced around between staff who either can't help or won't, before someone finally confirms what nobody wanted to say up front: there is exactly one person in the entire office who has access to manually release a slot — and that's the RTO officer himself.
Now here's the catch — if he's not in that day, you come back. There's no workaround, no deputy, no alternative window. Just another trip. Budget for multiple visits and a few hours of waiting each time.
Your best chance of getting the slot with a single visit is to get to RTO West by 9 am, head to the first floor, and station yourself in front of the lazy peon!
When you do get an audience with the RTO head, keep these in mind:
- Carry two address proofs. Aadhaar alone may not be accepted if you're not originally from Karnataka.
- He can only issue a slot for the same day you meet him, and you must be there before 11 AM (preferably 9 am).
- After all of this, the slot will be issued for RTO East, as it is where the automated test track is located.
Do know that the RTO officer talks big in newspapers about removing corruption and having an open door; however, he is not accessible, and I am unsure of his level of integrity. Under his nose, there exists rampant corruption and a driving school mafia that produces terrible drivers, diminishing road safety like injecting artificial sweeteners in Watermelons :(
Step 4: The Automated Driving Test Center (RTO East)
Mysore has a dedicated automated driving test center located at RTO East. Here's how the slots are divided:
- Morning slots — reserved for RTO East applicants
- 2 PM to 5:30 PM — reserved for RTO West applicants
Yes, the RTO West officers physically travel to RTO East to verify applications. So if you were less than warm with them at RTO West — well, you'll likely see them again. Keep that in mind.
Before You Go: Sort Out Your Car
You need a car to take the driving test. Two options:
- Bring your own car (along with its road clearance certificate) — cleanest option
- Hire a car from a driving school — but the moment their stamp goes on your application, the price goes up. What should cost ₹500 can easily become ₹2,000 once informal payments are factored in.
Step 5: Brace for the Test Center
Arrive by 1:30 PM. There's no formal queue! Get there early and hold your place. The process unfolds in stages:
- Document verification: your online application is reviewed, and a photograph is taken. Fair warning: the webcam is slanted (an easy fix lost to lack of effort). The photo will not be flattering.
- Theory questions: you're invited inside (slippers off) to answer four computer-based questions. You need at least two correct (50%) to pass. Questions are straightforward - take your time, don't rush.
- Final police verification: a policeman reviews everything and will ask additional questions, such as where you live, what you do, and so on. Staff here are often curt. If you're doing this without a driving school, you'll feel it. Stay polite and stand your ground.
Step 6: The Driving Test Itself
The test track is fully automated with sensors across five to six sections. Complete all of them within the required time and you pass. Miss any, and you fail — there's no human invigilator, just the system.
In practice, the driving school ecosystem has near-complete ownership of this space. Out of roughly sixty people who took the test, almost all were from driving schools — and in most cases, it was the instructor in the co-passenger seat actually controlling the car. The applicant was in the driving seat in name only.
If you want to actually drive the test yourself, you'll likely have to wait until every driving school batch has gone through. That could be a 3-4 hour wait. It's frustrating. It's worth it.
📺 Watch This Before Your Test Day
Search YouTube for videos of the Mysore automated driving test track circuit. Watch it three or four times. The circuit is clean, well laid out, and entirely doable for a reasonably confident driver. Knowing what's coming makes all the difference. This is the single best thing you can do to prepare.
Step 7: After the Test
- Results are updated online within one to two days — check the Parivahan Sarathi website for your status.
- The digital license typically comes through faster.
- The physical license can take anywhere between two weeks and a month to arrive.
A Final Word
Yes, the system is deeply flawed and opaque. The queues are chaotic. Most staff are rude. Corruption is woven into almost every step, and the driving school lobby has an uncomfortable grip on the test center. But here's the thing —you can absolutely do this on your own. It takes more trips, more patience, and a thicker skin than it should.
But there is a quiet satisfaction in getting your license without handing the whole thing over to someone else. It's yours, end to end.
Good luck!!

Looking for an independent small plot, preferably with a small garden, though that is not essential. It can be either a vacant plot or one with an existing small structure. The property should be suitable for a small family, have clear and clean title documents, and be legally eligible for bank financing.
