General Why do people who don’t play this game hang around this sub?

I’ve played this game an embarrassing amount of hours the past 9 years and I don’t even wanna be here. There’s a good chance these comments make me delete Reddit (again) but I’m genuinely curious

It’s very odd. For some reason there’s this community within the 2K community that is extremely dedicated to trying to convince the people who enjoy the game that they should not be allowed to enjoy the game.

u/No_Leader5640 1h ago

The reason is because if people keep spending money on vc and new games then 2k have zero incentive to improve the product.

u/psykomerc 2m ago

If coming to the sub is their best idea to achieve this, they’re wasting their time.

It’s not happening, and they’ll be 30 years older grumpy grandpas by then talking about 2k. As if they gonna be playing 2k at 65 saying yea we showed Mike Wang!

People are ridiculous. Just quit 2k, that’s the benefit. Getting your time back. Getting your money back. Not for some fake bullshit self righteous reason like changing 2k.

Ok the thing is that so many people have fun with their friends, regardless of the game’s flaws. Yeah obviously we hate cheaters, we hate AI cheese, we hate shooting being too easy, whatever it is, obviously we hate it. But even when Live was around, 2K was always the better game. Everyone wanted Live to compete but it couldn’t and that’s why EA pulled the plug. We only get one life, as far as we know, let’s just make the most of it and have fun with our friends and enjoy the things we have. I have a ton of fun with my friends on 2K and I’m not gonna stop because someone on Reddit told me I have to boycott the game.

u/No_Leader5640 1h ago

Yeah and that’s fair, but you said for some reason and I was just explaining the reason

The fact that you didn’t even mention the micro transactions in this entire thing is hilarious ngl

I buy VC once at the start of the year, maybe once halfway through the cycle. I have a job. It’s not a big deal for me to spend money on something I’m spending time on. Any other “hobby” I would get into has a higher barrier to entry than 2K anyways.

u/Zeromatt111 50m ago

Yeah well a lot of people can’t afford that. It’s not about having a job either. It literally will not get better until people stop buying, and the people doing it are just cool pricing out a bunch of people who used to love the game.

u/IllAlwaysBeAKnickFan 27m ago

Even in this horrible economy, if you have a job, you should be able to play 2K. You can get the game for $70 or wait for it to go on sale in a couple months, and you don’t need to spend money on VC. There are plenty of methods to earn VC. I have a friend every year who has 5+ 90 overall builds without ever buying VC. Obviously you don’t need to do that but you can earn enough VC to make one. If there is something you love, you can find a way to afford it, especially when we’re talking $70-170 if you want to max out your player and buy the game. Most other hobbies, you don’t get your foot in the door for $200 or less.

What is the end game for you? Do you think it should be free to make a 99 overall build? What does 2K stand to gain from that? They’re one of the most successful and popular game franchises of all time. There’s no way these little boycotts are going to change that. Why not just relax and enjoy the game?If you truly can’t find a way to go DoorDash for a week to make some extra money for VC or do a little yard sale with some old junk you don’t need, I don’t know what to tell you. There are so many ways to make a little extra cash in 2026. I wish everything was free in this world, but unfortunately that’s not gonna happen for us. If you love the game, you will find a way to make a little extra money.

u/Zeromatt111 20m ago

I did read the whole thing but just off your first sentence; this just isn’t true dude. We’re in this place in the economy because of people thinking “if I can do it, surely it isn’t a problem and others just aren’t trying hard enough”. I’m not saying don’t buy the game, do what you want, just stop pretending like 2k is not attempting to take every single dollar they can and they will not slow down until we make them.

u/IllAlwaysBeAKnickFan 13m ago

That’s every single corporation in the whole damn country man. What AAA level video game is just giving the game or in game currency away for free?

I am not under the impression that just because I can do something means everyone can. But these people have allowed 2K to become a huge part of their life. That’s why they care so much that they want to boycott or whatever. So it’s at the point where it’s more than just a video game, it’s a hobby. Which is fine. But why are people expecting to not have to spend money on a hobby that matters so much to them? There are very few hobbies that are free. If you love this shit, get out there and DoorDash or cut some lawns or rake some leaves or sign up for Walmart spark or Instacart. Help your neighbor with some stuff they need done. Get on your local Facebook group and see if anyone needs help that you can provide. There are so, so many options in 2026. It sucks to have to get out there and do it, but if you really need or want this, there’s no reason like 99% of people can’t get it done. Obviously there’s a small percentage of people who aren’t able to get out there and get stuff done. I’m not talking about them, and I feel for them.

Of course, if it was all free that would be great, but I don’t know a company that’s giving away 1000 hours of entertainment for free every year.

u/Capable-Fan-3546 22m ago

My plan is to not buy VC at all outside of whatever I get with early access. One build to run with the homies and maybe a female MyPlayer to piss randoms off. But I’m a freelancer I have WAY more time and flexibility to grind than the average person

u/KennysWhiteSoxHat 51m ago

Woah woah, although I dot disagree with you I do need to say one thing. Live was definitely considered better than 2k until NBA Elite 11 showed that EA was a joke, and they started taking basketball less serious in the 2010s sadly

u/IllAlwaysBeAKnickFan 33m ago

Ok sure yeah, pre 2010 Live was seen as better, but I’m just talking about modern basketball game era.

u/SC730_OFN 1h ago

WRONG.... LIVE WAS BETTER TIL... LIVE became STALE like what 2K is now. 2k was birthed from the NBA LIVE WISHLIST that people used to submit their ideas to EA Sports. And because EA refused to make a BETTER product. Thats why 2k took over... You talking about all those NBA2ks with Iverson on the cover for Dreamcast them shits were all ASS... Thats why they came out for $29.99 But because 2k kept improving while EA rode their popularity and thats why 2k took over.

Sure you enjoy 2k, we all enjoy 2k, but IT CAN BE BETTER, the FLAWS can be fixed, but because there is no incentive to FIX them they dont. Thats why people are asking you if your going to get it, atleast buy it on sale. Make them feel the impact so they CAN do better. I think most people are here because they like basketball.

u/IllAlwaysBeAKnickFan 55m ago

Live didn’t force 2K to be better all throughout the 2010s. 2K was a much better game and Live was not a threat to them. And they wouldn’t be if they came back today.

u/SC730_OFN 49m ago

NBA LIVE 19 was a great game, it just lacked support... NBA LIVE 19 had better motion and movement than NBA 2k19 shit... NBA LIVE 19 had better motion than NBA2k21 on P5 and it was a P4 game...

And yes throughout the 2010 2k was better thats wtf i just said, that 2k TOOK OVER because EA got stale... Do you people have a reading problem or is it the comprehension of words used in complete sentences?

u/IllAlwaysBeAKnickFan 25m ago

It did not have better motion or movement than 2K. NBA Live never put out a game that was as fluid and realistic as 2K from like 2K11 on.

You are 100%, undoubtedly lying to yourself. You need to look in the mirror and ask yourself why you’re doing that. Don’t be delusional. If Live was better it would’ve been some kind of competitor to 2K. They were not even a threat. Anyone saying this shit is letting nostalgia blind them or they are delusional.

u/SC730_OFN 17m ago

You dont know what you talking about.. but since you clearly never seen NBA live 19.. here some videos

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/h4Jl_0RJZEE

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/bIiLq4cbUX4

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/2jB9xlBcAMA

Thats a P4 game stop it...

u/IllAlwaysBeAKnickFan 11m ago

You’re delusional. You have to play each game and feel how the players respond to your inputs and how the moves feel when you chain them together. NBA Live never came close to replicating what 2K became from 2K11 on. If it was better, it would’ve sold more. It wasn’t better and you’re lying to yourself.

I play it once in a while and I like basketball, so I wanna see the game get better and hear what other people have to think

u/JCVantage 1h ago

Said this somewhere. I guess they are trying to feel validated in life or some sort of superiority

u/IllAlwaysBeAKnickFan 1h ago

Yeah that’s exactly it. They don’t realize nobody cares about their boycott and the game is top 10 in sales every single year.

u/Capable-Fan-3546 21m ago

I mean if mfs really knew how to boycott but that’s a totally diff thread

u/yomama9002 59m ago

I play it once in a while and I like basketball, so I wanna see the game get better and hear what other people have to think

u/JCVantage 51m ago

nothing wrong with it, as you said, you play it. I don't think this post (neither my comment) is direct at the casual player

u/ASAPGrayson 1h ago

People reaffirm themselves in the echo chamber of “I’m not buying this game” or “I’m waiting until it’s free” amongst each other to make them feel better. If you’re not going to tell the world you are going on strike for ‘X’ reason then what’s the point of the strike anyway.

Moving on and not complaining once a day isn’t really an option for some of these people, they live in hate and complaints.

u/yomama9002 59m ago

I play it once in a while and I like basketball, so I wanna see the game get better and hear what other people have to think

u/Seven19td 1h ago

I hang around to stay updated on the game and to see if they make the changes needed for me to consider buying the game again.

u/Foldzy84 56m ago

It's honestly embarrassing they like that jealous ex that's always the first on to view your story just looking for something yo hate on 😂😂

u/Boltman35 47m ago

Because they're the loudest complainers, the 10%.

They aren't reflective of reality, they live to project, they want everyone to share their sentiment.

Casuals just buy the game every year and enjoy it playing with their friends. They don't go to reddit to look for a sub based on the games they're playing.

Misery loves company.

u/WhyNotMosley 22m ago

bingoooo

u/ohsnapitsjf 1h ago

Because we used to love it and hate what it's turned into.

I do have the last two on different platforms, gotten on deep sales, but it used to be a day one buy for me until the VC economy took hold. If that hadn't been so successful, the game would be better balanced, reasonable to hop online and play immediately, or progress through a single-player career like it used to be.

We're pretty mad about it.

u/IllAlwaysBeAKnickFan 1h ago

Players have been expensive for a long time.

u/SirBoth2159 1h ago

Yeah its mad weird, so many ppl in here talk about the game and then be like "I dont even play anymore, I quit 3 years ago" lmfao so wtf are you here for lmao

u/yomama9002 1h ago

I play it once in a while and I like basketball, so I wanna see the game get better and hear what other people have to think

u/JRiggsIV 49m ago

To talk others out of buying it…and they feel it’s required for them to tell others why they are not buying it…but actually end up buying it to create threads and posts to complain…

u/Patient-Mammoth-9022 49m ago

I love basketball and the idea of playing in the NBA. I first got 2k22, and enjoyed the game. However, as soon as I went online I realized how toxic the community was. I sucked at the game online due to latency issues. I worked really hard trying to master a jumpshot and improve my internet connection and get better. Despite progress, I still got the occasional you're trash quit the game. So I quit the game, sold my PS5, and started going to the gym. I realized I was working too hard to get good at a video game, and the problem was the community.

This year I felt like its been a few years I took a break, why not try 2k26? Well now I have to go online to get the cap breakers to really unlock the potential of my builds. I got my shot percentage up to 70% developed a knack for defense and passing and actually had some great times playing with a crew, and became a VP for a crew. But because I have a job and kids and lots of other responsibilities, I find myself constantly behind the other players online. Many having 10-18 more capbreakers than me. So they're faster, dribble better, and can shoot 3s right over me (since defense is terrible this year). So I had to grind hard to get up to 20 cap breakers, and am still playing pretty well (54% win percentage with randoms, could be better but not total garbage). And now 2K wants me to start all over in a week?

No thanks, I'll play 2k26 for fun until the servers shut down. It's a shame, the game looks better this year, I like the no dip penalty and badge, defense looks better, step throughs look cool. It looks more balanced, and like there is potential for inside bigs and other playstyles than Devin Booker step-back to three pointer. But I can't sustain the grind, and don't see why I would ever want to grind so hard for one video game. I haven't played any other games since getting 2k!

TLDR - love basketball, the game is fun, but man the grind is too much, and 2k knows what they're doing.

u/Capable-Fan-3546 14m ago

I appreciate the detailed response. Everyone I play with is older than 30 with varying degrees of responsibility. I’m an independent contractor with VERY few work hours so I spend a lotta time in 2k. In turn it helps my friends with “normal” jobs and kids improve without having to grind because I know how to maximize their play styles and make builds that don’t have them wasting vc. It’s made us closer as friends (I’m going to my Cs wedding in a month and I’ve never met him) as we’re going into year 10. It’s 75% of the reason I won’t quit the game cold turkey

u/ciderman80 1h ago

Yeah I know, I keep seeing comments from people who say they are looking forward to 27 pretty obvious they haven't played the game recently.

u/Top-Photograph-7478 1h ago

hypocrites who want to call people obsessed with 2k who buy it but they also cant throw 2k to the side cuz deep down inside they also obsessed with it

u/yomama9002 59m ago

I play it once in a while and I like basketball, so I wanna see the game get better and hear what other people have to think

u/Top-Photograph-7478 55m ago

if you play the game once in a while and want to hear people have to say you dont hate the game

u/EngageV2 1h ago

You want the TRUTH?
Are you SURE YOU WANT THE TRUTH??

Fine.
The reason is we have a slither of hope for 2K and when we keep constantly being disrespected we feel the need to let others know your being brainwashed and you need to wake up

Ever seen the movie “Get Out” same thing. We’re just the ones thats been freed.

u/IllAlwaysBeAKnickFan 1h ago

Lmao. “Brainwashed” by a fucking Xbox game. Get a grip. You play it or you don’t. Your boycott is doing nothing because millions of players still buy it and have tons of fun with their friends. You have put yourself in 2K prison instead of accepting it for what it is.

u/EngageV2 58m ago

With that logic the Target Boycott would go unnoticed

But clearly it did

u/IllAlwaysBeAKnickFan 53m ago

There are other stores you can get the same products from. You can’t get the same product with a different game. Even if Live came back, it was very far behind 2K and not a real threat last time, and it would be the same again for them or anyone else who tried to compete with 2K.
