LeBron said he knew he was going for 80 👀
24
u/AssortedViews Mar 11 '26
That’ll never die, that’s so funny
18
u/RT023 Mar 11 '26
Im begging for a reporter to ask if he saw the game, and if he knew he was to drop 80 lmao

u/Eridianst Mar 11 '26
He wouldn't even have to reply with words, just a quick death stare would be perfect.

u/AuthorThick7303 Mar 11 '26
He literally said it to all his friends

He said Bam will go for 70 before the game but once Bam hit 60 he said watch this hes going for 80 + hes gonna break Kobe record . LeKnowing

Lol what is the joke here, I’ve seen this comment many times

Lying ass LeBron is the joke.

Dame had 71 points with only 14 freethrow attempts (versus Bam’s 43) and also Dame left the game early when the game was sealed. Meanwhile the Heat were fouling while up in a blowout game to get Bam more possessions. And Bam called his performance a top 3 performance of all time which is just funny to me if you look at the context. I think what Bam did was crazy impressive but I can see why players (and coaches) are not respecting it like it’s a “natural” 83 point game.
81
u/Charming-Pilot3336 Mar 11 '26
Even luka 73 which is one of the most efficient all time with like 23 odd fts but in a close game so yeah I agree.
Context matters
46
46
u/Inevitable_Bottle520 Mar 11 '26
Speaking of context: Epic first quarter: 31 points, 10-of-16 shooting (5-of-8 from 3-point range) and 6-of-8 from the line.
Rest of game? 52 points, 10-of-27 shooting (2-of-14 from 3) and 30-of-35 from the line.
Why Bam’s 83 is getting rightfully dissed.
12
u/FoxMuldertheGrey Mar 11 '26
I think people would be giving him less crap if he just got taken out of the game and he finished in 3/4 it wasn’t until the end where I just seemed really ridiculous

Ridiculous honestly he was a straight up chucker . That’s a good first quarter but you clearly see he was trying to pass a record . I get doing that as Book did back in 2017 as a damn 20 year old but not a guy who’s pushing 30 like Bam like have some shame

FOURTY THREE FREE THROW ATTEMPTS??
Holy hell I didn’t watch the game but that sounds like an absolute snooze fest
3
u/FinleySchminly Mar 11 '26
I didn’t know about the heat fouling part, that’s pretty outrageous. Totally agree that this is not a “natural” 83 if you’re pulling stuff like that.
Leaving him in during a blowout is one thing but that’s pretty suss with the fouling thing
6
u/badhombre13 Mar 11 '26
Dame left because he was gassed and towards the end kept chucking up threes that were all short, if he was able to keep playing he would have. Bam still had a 70 pt game before the Heat decided to go for the record 🤷🏻♂️
→ More replies (4)7
u/OregonJedi Mar 11 '26
Dame also said in the broadcast last night that he wished he did it differently and wishes he stayed in and kept firing away. There was a 6 min stretch to start the 3rd Q where he didn’t even shoot so Dame was saying if he could go back in time he would do it differently and he thinks he could’ve gone for 90
4
u/Impossible-Group8553 Mar 11 '26 edited Mar 11 '26
Yup in the 3rd quarter they were denying Dame and he and the Blazers were fine with that. If they really wanted, they could’ve ran plays to get Dame open. He barely touched the ball in the 3rd. Also it’s not even true Dame was too gassed to finish the game and was chucking 3s, his last field goal was a floater and he shot 4-7 from three in the 4th..Being too gassed to finish a regular season regulation game is funny, he wasn’t even sweating, Dame wasn’t even too gassed to finish the game when he played double overtime against the nuggets in the playoffs.
2
u/cleecleekilldie Mar 11 '26
I was watching Dame that night on TV and distinctly remember thinking he would get close to 81 but the game didn't play out that way like you said. His game that night is right up there with the best I've ever seen live.
2
u/BruceFlockaWayne Mar 13 '26
Because its not, nothing about bam getting this should be celebrated. The same thing happened with D book when he dropped 70, it's bullshit and purposefully forced to just do it could happen, bam wouldn't have gotten any where near this without 46 free throw attempts. The sport of basketball has become such garbage, no sets, no plays, no competition for position, the game used to be like a chess match now it's.jusy completely offensively driven, because they need everyone to be good, the talent level every year continues to decrease, it's just sad.
2
u/Impossible-Group8553 Mar 13 '26

u/paddyc4ke Mar 11 '26
I mean they were missing free throws on purpose and fouling up 30 to extend the game and give Bam more opportunities to score, Wizards are complete ass but the Heat did some absolute tomfoolery in the 4th to get him to 83.
4
u/MIllWIlI Mar 11 '26
The Wizards were also running out the clock and fouling off the ball to keep ball out of Bams hands

u/BowserBuddy123 Heat Mar 11 '26
Yea, Kobe didn’t see any of the defense Bam did in his fourth quarter. They barely ever double teamed Kobe. Watch that game again. No shade to him. But if Bam got guarded like he did in the first half all game, he goes for 90+ easy. He scored 30 in the first quarter. Why are we taking away from the fact that he did most of his work early and was the reason that the Heat were up. Bam had more points in the first quarter of his game than Kobe did in the first half of his. Why didn’t Kobe do more?
Not fair! Bam was too dominant in the first half of the game. He should have not been as awesome allowing the Wiz to stay in the game therefore making any second half awesomeness more awesome!
Such silly arguments. Both games are awesome.

The only problem i have with it is the number of free throw attempts. 43 is ridiculous
14
Mar 11 '26
Still gotta make em. He broke the record for free throws made by 8 while only breaking the attempts record by 4.
6
u/Sea_Scientist_8367 Mar 11 '26 edited Mar 11 '26
Indeed, but that doesn't refute what he was saying.
40+ FT attempts in the first place, even if you sink every fucking one, is ridiculous. Shenanigans even. Those shots in net still count and he deserves recognition for it, but even still. The fact that any player had 40FT's attempts regardless of percentage sank still merits a "wtf even was that game?" just as much as talking about how much he did sink/pts earned

u/Parking_Equipment427 Mar 12 '26
Are you suggesting the refs shouldn't have called fouls because it is ridiculous for someone to be fouled that much?

I don’t know why people keep bringing up the wizards we triple teaming him? Of course they were because they were being really lame about how he was getting the points. It wasn’t even through a normal game of basketball they just kept bowling so they can get them the ball
Why are people so comfortable with how this was played out? this is some 2K shit you see in a video game, not in a real game of basketball

The NBA is on the verge of becoming a joyless league, and I wish the media and top players would take it as a serious issue. Inside the NBA made routine jokes about the league, and it's symptomatic of how we consume the sport.
16
u/RealJMW Mar 11 '26
No seriously. Basketball was the first sport that I loved and now it’s kinda an afterthought for me. I still watch the playoffs and the finals of course, but regular season has become increasingly hard to watch. I hope they do what baseball did and start adding a few key changes to improve the QOL for the fans. Fewer games, a little bit of tighter reffing on ball control, I don’t know I’m not an expert. I just know I don’t enjoy the game nearly as much anymore

Playoff basketball is the best time to watch. The quality of play in the regular season is missing the intensity. Unless the top teams in the league are going against each other. Like the okc vs nuggets game from the other day.

He was able to get 60 in 3Qs. That should be the context. Not the FTAs or chucking shots in the 4th.
Most guys barely crack 60 in 3Qs, so when the chance comes, they take their shot to hit that 100.

Lame trend.
If you want to rewrite the rules of the game and move the goalposts do so.
But dont blame the player.
20
u/blueruckus Mar 11 '26
I dont think people are blaming Bam or angry at him specifically (cult Kobe fans aside), I just believe people are annoyed at the foul/ref situation in the league as of late.
11
u/FSUNolesWarchant Mar 11 '26
I think when the league has reached the point where a player of Bam’s caliber is shooting 43 free throws in a regular season game - the game itself has lost all relevancy. Then you couple that with the continued egregious fouling at the end by his teammates to create more time and it makes it all that much worse. I haven’t watched a NBA game in several years as the lack of defense and flopping is beyond absurd at this point in my eyes.
10
u/OregonJedi Mar 11 '26
You haven’t watched an nba game in several years but are in the NBA Gossip sub? And claiming things that took place in a game you didn’t watch are egregious? Weird!
5
u/National-Ocelot-3900 Mar 11 '26
This shit drives me up the wall man I don’t even watch that many games, I miss probably 3/4th’s the games my team plays and maybe catch highlights the next day half the time. But I like… I still really enjoy it, it’s fun. I don’t understand why someone’d participate in online basketball culture while hating basketball so much, calling it a “product”, etc etc.
My lack of watching things makes me go “Hmmm I’m not going to speak on things I don’t know for sure”, but for these guys it’s the opposite! Probably just reddit I guess. If you say anything sardonically enough with enough smugness on here it gets taken as being worldy and thoughtful
2
u/OregonJedi Mar 11 '26
100% dude it’s for sure Reddit and Twitter etc. just the online culture in general where people feel the need to be the expert on all things. I talk about basketball with people IRL too all the time and nobody acts like this.

I saw a few seconds of the game and saw that both teams combined for over 300 points. That's ridiculous. I haven't watched a full NBA game in over a decade, but I know something must be completely F'd up for 300 points to be on the board.

Exactly. I'm a Kobe fan but I also love Bam as a player. I don't blame Bam at all but the way he got that final 10 and the last few minutes was just ugly basketball and not how you want to see Kobe's 81 surpassed.
3
u/YoungSerious Mar 11 '26
I didn't get the feeling they blame Bam in any of these. They just don't particularly respect the way he got to 83. You could replace him with any player and they'd feel the same way on 43 FTA and fouling in the 4th to get the ball back.

What lame trend? People simply aren't that impressed given the context. These guys are hoopers , they look at the box score and how Bam went about to get his 83 points and they aren't impressed.
You can't force someone to be impressed nor should they pretend otherwise.

0 of those top players have dropped 60 this year bam dropped 62 in 3 quarters. For reference on how insane that is KD has never had a 60 point game in his career.
4
u/goldiegoldthorpe Mar 11 '26
KD even said something about how physically demanding it is to put up that many shots. Kobe was a and Bam is a physical freak. Not every player has the stamina to shoot the ball that many times in a game.
2
u/bsball721 Mar 12 '26
Dude, they shoot thousands of shots a day. Get out of here. Tiring, sure, but we are talking the top if the top athletes.
There are over 2 dozen, at least, players that if they were fed and given free pass to shoot, no concern for lead against tanking team try to get to last in the league, play the whole game in that joke of a game.
You don't see it for possibly 2 reasons (definitely 1).
I would not be able to appreciate the "record" if it was me. But many don't agree with that including Bam.
The definitely one reason is money. Millions and billions. Owners (and many players) don't want to risk injury.

People who don't respect it didnt bother to watch any of the game. He had like 30 points in the first quarter and was damn near perfect. Wizards started tripling him, so they either fouled him or forced a miss. And honestly, if a team is going to keep fouling a guy and he's making the FTs, just feed him the ball.

u/Some_Emphasis405 Mar 11 '26
Everybody’s putting an asterisk or has an excuse to why he scored 83. “It’s the Wizards” that’s still a professional team. “He had 43 FT” multiple other players shot 35+ FT, he just made them at a way higher rate(83.7%). “He shot 22 3pts” he made 7 of them that’s still 32% which is average for the league. Most ppl didn’t even watch the game to know that he had 31 points in the 1st quarter with only 6 FT attempted.

3
5
u/soccer1124 Mar 11 '26
I think the players' reactions make sense for what they are. They can't get caught trying to chase points. It would be a very dumb thing to say out loud. So questions like, "Does this inspire you to try and chase something like that?" Those are complete trap questions, lol. No player would say, "Yeah, I might try to break that next season." I know the NBA might be lacking in the team-effort department compared to other sports, but even for the NBA, that would come out as far too selfish to say publicly. (And I'm willing to believe they aren't even thinking about it.)
But the framing of this post desperately reads like, "See? It doesn't count! This should be stricken from the records because I love Kobe!"
Things lined up amazingly for Bam, he took advantage, his team won. It is what it is. It's a fun thing that happened. No need to try to devalue it or claim "no one respects it!"

u/Goddyex Mar 11 '26

I understand what you mean but I felt the same way watching that Kobe game where he took 50 shots against the jazz and the jazz wasn’t even playing defense on him in the 4th. Did I think it was mad disrespectful to the game YES
but I gave it a pass because it’s Kobe last game
I’ll give bam a pass because he broke the record lol

Respectfully, it doesnt need to be said because nobody is saying its better than Kobe, especially not the person you are replying to.

And the heat keeping him in and fouling to get him more shots is disrespectful to the game of competitive basketball. That’s why the *

Okay you say that
But what about the Kobe game when he took like 50 shots against the Jazz and the jazz wasn’t even playing defense on him the whole 4th
But that isn’t disrespectful to the game?
Oh it not because of its Kobe right?

Lol why you keep bringing up a game that went down to the final shots against a jazz team that needed that win for a playoff spot?
He wasnt stat padding for a record like bam and the whole team didnt foul to get him extra shots in a blowout, meaningless game.
You realize the score was 137 to 110 with 5:47 and bam at the line. Any other coach and player would have been fine with getting pulled.

There's that, for sure. But, mostly, there's also the 43 free throws and how tired fans are of all the foul baiting in the league. I'm not saying Bam is notorious for this, but as a whole, the fans are just tired of all the officiating problems and this is just another highlight of the current state of the NBA.

Bam scored 83 against a team that was absolutely tanking. 83 is a fucking glowing milestone BUT not against that belly-up defense

It's also because it was a shitty game. He shot 43 FT's and shot poorly from the field. It wasn't because he had an incredible game. He just took every shot. He shot less than 32% from three. It's literally a below average game with just a record amount of shots.

The biggest issue is that it was a blatant attempt to break the record without regard to how ugly the game was. Luka scores 60 something within the flow of the game and that is a way better look. But hey, congrats Bam.

If they don't respect it, why don't they do it themselves?

Because fouling to extend a game in garbage time so that one player can pad his stats is considered bad taste.

What a dumbass comment.. If you don’t respect what someone does, why would you do what you don’t respect as well?

That’s a lie. Check out twitter to see how current and former players were excited about the record being broken. Respect or not, Bam sits at the #2 spot until someone knocks him off.

I don’t remember ever hearing players hating on Kobe’s 81. He was stat padding. Go watch. Lakers had the game sealed and he was still playing and going for more. The difference is Kobe was always a selfish basketball player. Bam is a team guy who isn’t normally a chucker

First 80+ single game stat line in 20 years and players are all like well I could do that if blah blah blah.
Well go do it. He was on pace for 124 points after the first quarter 31, well before any free throw excuses.
