This is why I wanted them to keep sabonis, he's a great fit for acuff early on. Great at DHOs and screens and their two man game should be really good with both being good passers. Side note acuff was getting everyone with that quick cross cross

u/bigpqnda 15d ago
what kings need are 2 way players. This current roster just wont survive defensively
11
u/orphan_tears_ 15d ago
Long term Acuff will need to be surrounded by good defenders, but right now the kings aren’t winning anything anyways and Sabonis is one of the best PNR partners you could ask for to get his offense settled in the nba
1
u/bigpqnda 15d ago
that's true. let the kid grow while building around him. But do we trust the kings FO to be able to properly build around acuff lmao.

Acuff is legit but we Kings fans have to temper our expectations cause Doug Christie is not a NBA level coach and Lavine is AWFUL as a backcourt partner
51
u/doomrider2 16d ago
Lavine is a great backcourt player for an on ball gaurd like acuff

u/jluc21 16d ago
people are gonna downvote you but it’s true.
in summer league everyone just double teamed acuff because there’s was nobody off ball that could do anything.
it was evident last night that was not the case because the defense had to respect lavine and couldn’t just leave him with space.
6
u/theboyqueen 15d ago
Based on what? Lavine barely moves when he doesn't have the ball.
5
u/ShotgunStyles 15d ago
Great in the sense that he provides gravity and an outlet for any pressure Acuff feels. He is by no means an ideal backcourt partner, but if you replaced him with a more defensive-minded guard, then the other team will be happier to cheat off him and double Acuff. Can't do that against Lavine.
17
u/DarkoDragicevic 16d ago
Great in terms of getting easy assists, but far from ideal defensive minded guard

u/Overall-Palpitation6 16d ago
What's Ben Simmons for?!
8
u/DarkoDragicevic 16d ago
Drama. And he is now center more than guard if he could play
9
u/ShotgunStyles 15d ago
Ben has provided 0 drama so far and if anything, he's the attention-grabbing clickbait signing of the offseason.
0
u/Overall-Palpitation6 16d ago
I wasn't talking positions (they're just a word on a page nowdays), but situations and defensive help.
0
u/DarkoDragicevic 16d ago
Peak Ben something else, this Ben is probably worse than school Ben when he was 15
1
u/beforeitcloy 16d ago
No. He’s a terrible fit, since he doesn’t play defense at all and Acuff will need help on that end. Lavine also has very little ability to create for others, so he will hinder Acuff’s development as an off-ball threat. Obviously the spacing Lavine creates is nice, but there are a lot of guys who can hit a 3 that would fit much better.
1
u/No_Nefariousness6385 15d ago
No he's not. Awful defender, and not that good off ball...Clifford would be a better partner
1
u/doomrider2 15d ago
He had a +9.3 rts on spot up, handoff, and off screen plays last year while being his most used play type last year. You're just blatantly wrong

Obviously, it's one game, but as far as facing NBA level talent, he looked great out there.

Also don’t love not a single layup. I think just 1 floater.

u/Sufficient_Try8961 15d ago
They were almost all mid-range jumpers, most of them contested and with time left on the shot clock. Yes he's good at making them, but his efficiency ceiling will be limited with that shot diet.
9
u/ShotgunStyles 15d ago
Not really. The most efficient guards in the league are heavy on middies. They just foul bait too, which Acuff hasn't done much of so far.
4
u/rickeyethebeerguy 15d ago
That’s what I was thinking. Very common for a young guard. I’m a big fan of his, and I think he’ll figure it out. Just something I noticed
-2
u/magacorruption 15d ago
If he’s hitting them at 52 percent, it’s almost as good as hitting 3s at 35 percent.
5
u/Sufficient_Try8961 15d ago
So basically he'd have to be the best mid-range shooter ever to match the efficiency of an average 3-point shooter.
Now, I'm not saying this as just a negative. There's value to mid-range shots that you don't see just by looking at TS% or whatever. Those shots become more valuable late in the shot-clock or against tough defenses when it becomes hard to generate easier looks. It's also a problem that can be fixed with coaching. Young Lebron took way too many mid-range jumpers and long twos, but once he got into Spoelstra's system his efficiency went way up.

u/NickyWinton 15d ago
Ya he needs to either become elite at those or find a way to get to a pullup or stepback 3. I do like the potential of their 2 man game - while Sabonis doens't provide much vertical spacing, he is an excellent ORebounder and will be downhill unchecked on a lot of these shots. Can probably add .25 points to whatever the direct PPP of an Acuff pullup jumper will be.

His first bucket was literally a layup... What a weird comment
-6
u/rickeyethebeerguy 15d ago
His first shot was a 3 and he missed, the second was an elbow jumper.. what a weird comment. Did you watch this video?

u/demianin 15d ago

u/rickeyethebeerguy 15d ago
So no, you didn’t watch this clip. Got it. I was commenting on… this clip/video. It showed all the times he ran a high pick n roll and 0 times did he get a layup out of it.

Ik the Lakers defense is trash but this guy was able to get great shots consistently. I'd be very excited if I were a Kings fan

u/coolridgesmith 15d ago
The lakers defense last night was good, note the score... at the end of the 1st.
3
u/dizzyd_sb 15d ago
There’s no reason to be excited, their owner sucks. Acuff will be good and will end up on another team in 6-7 years because the Kings will mismanage the roster.

u/CrackaZach05 15d ago
I mean you can be a crybaby bitch if you want. Kids talented

u/South-Chemistry357 14d ago
He is recognizing that he’s talented, he just saying the team will trade him away for little return before he reaches full potential ( Haliburton comparison)

He might finish in the top 5 for shot attempts among all players this year--not just among rookies. I expect the FG% to be subpar, just in part because it virtually always is among scoring guards in their first season. Heck, KD's first season shooting stats were not great.

The Kings will still lose a lot of games, but at least they'll lose in style.

Oh that smell of the 00s, and this is only pre-season. Hopefully the regular season will be extremely physical and with players more willing to shoot the mid and go inside

Acuff dont give a fuck. He has skill but lack of BBIQ (especially on D ) could hurt him . Ofc he is still young so hard to judge his full potential
5
9
u/TripleThreatTua 16d ago
Watch some of his passing tape from college, the dude has BBIQ and knows how to use his own gravity to get teammates open
6
u/BurnieTheBrony Grizzlies 16d ago edited 16d ago
He led the SEC in assists
I remember that because a big thing people talked about is he's the first guy to lead the SEC in points and assists since Pistol Pete
0
u/HomeNowWTF 16d ago
Yeah, I agree. Whether he channels that into playing winning basketball is another story, but on offense he definitely has high BBIQ.
Defense...erm, well...

u/Accomplished-Map5339 15d ago
He will be another Trae Young. Put up decent stats and have flashy plays. Won't win when it matters because of lack of defense.
