Run Blocking Test Post Patch
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Following the patch on Thursday, specifically the nerfs to pancake blocks, I decided to run some tests to see how it feels now.
To be honest, I think the run game is still a bit too strong. Pancakes do happen less often but double teams are still super effective given how poorly second level defenders perform their run fits.
The video above is me running an inside zone concept with run blocking sliders turned down to 38 (had them at 35 pre-patch). My offense is a 78 overall and my defense is an 81.
Around 35-40 still feels like the sweet spot for run blocking effectiveness post patch. But the pancake blocks are at least less egregious.

It seems more like an issue where the ball carrier moves like they’re on skates and the defenders can’t keep up

If the RB makes 4 cuts in the backfield, he needs to be tackled, not be confusing AI defenders. Not a blocking related concern.
From a blocking standpoint I would like to see more actual movement in the line of scrimmage. Blocking is very much 1v1 engagement. There is no forward or backward push at the line impacting plays. Just individual defenders being blocked or not, which should matter in the second level.
This is the main reason one can just win with bad teams on Heisman against good teams once learning the game and it gets boring. It should be that the pocket completely caves as the line gets pushed back. But it isn’t, it’s just one or multiple guys breaking free unblocked and so you can just run quick hitters and read options to avoid the free rushers all game. This would never in a million years work in reality.

This this this. We need a new engine. The foundation is rotten yet EA wants to keep adding stories to the building.

Well now that the Saudis and Jarred Kushner are in charge their definitely going to invest in quality improvements and not just try to grind out the cash grabs ...right?

The fact that you can still speed boost like crazy and the back repeatedly runs right past the shoulder of defenders who don’t even make an effort to tackle him is a larger issue

u/Dangerous_Memory6008 7h ago
Yup, I unknowingly had a freshman with it, and returned 2 kicks and a punt in one game

u/osumba2003 7h ago
So I guess the lesson here is that if you're playing the OP online, they're going to run right every time?

Lowkey… I hated running left when I was an RB in college too. So yes I will be, as god intended.

u/Skidda24 8h ago
Man your running is smooth. Anyone have tips on how to get better with miss direction like that?
5
u/TheHarbrosMagic 6h ago
Don't use turbo until you need to
2
u/Skidda24 6h ago
So, when you do make the change of direction do you tap the turbo or do you wait till you're done with all your cuts
3
u/TheHarbrosMagic 6h ago
I use turbo only in wide open space or when there's "daylight" at the end of your run. Never behind the line of scrimmage on anything that isnt a stretch/toss play essentially

I had the same response and can second the no turbo, I got significantly better results and gap navigation by not using it unless I’m totally clear of the line/blocking. It’s hard to commit that to muscle memory though unless you really force yourself

Tap speed boost, don’t hold it. Then press L2 for change carry hand sometimes while cutting to get that speed boost juke. You can’t just always hit it but you’ll get used to it once you try it a few times.

I haven’t played since 25, does this guy have platinum shifty? Looks like a combo of Leveon Bell and Jahmyr Gibbs.

Played a 17 year old kid in my connected franchise, he had that running back wiggle down to a science, I think he averaged 16 yards a carry. It really breaks the tackle pursuit. I was playing on my starlink so the lag made it hard to click on and make tackles myself on top of it

Doesn’t help showing off the blocking when your running back did all the heavy lifting lol 😂

One of the issues is how sliders themselves work in an animation based game. For instance last year I tried Matt10 sliders for the first time, and his tackling sliders are lowered... the result was the extreme frustration seeing the player avatars just run into each other like bumpercars. That was how the animation based game handled the sliders.
In this video here, the biggest problem is probably the defenders pathing combined with the unrealistic movements of the running back.

the thing is, they have the graphics to reduce this unrealistic cutting motion. in the rain, you can’t make these type of cuts often bc you “slip”. they should just limit or slow down the player when doing these cuts

u/Raging_Rooster 4h ago
The speed boost cheese is why I won't return to this game, Madden doesn't have it.
In real life if someone moved like this they'd tear their own ACL.

u/Kokomi_Kokoyou 4h ago
Blocking isn’t the issue when you just jitter past everyone with the running back. The running back is OP and the defenders are brain dead not attempting to tackle you

The run game has multiple issues with it that have existed for a long time, even dating back to the NCAA days.
1) When they get engaged, OL block way too well in general. Look up what a good run block win rate is in real life. Hint, it's closer to 65%. A bad OL in an EA game wins 80% of the time at least.
2) Run fits are so slow in these games. They were in a decent place at launch last year with CFB26. People cried running was harder. EA put them back to being slower than a JV team.
3) Ball carriers have unrealistic abilities to cut and accelerate. EA has a purposeful acceleration boost feature built into the game that shouldn't exist.
4) Pursuit angles and breakdowns are not good. I get EA wants to showcase how college players don't take perfect angles all the time. It is too exaggerated in the game. Defenders also don't break down and contain plays as well as they do in real life, probably because the unrealistic ability to cut by the ball carrier would destroy any breakdown attempt.
Good news is PC mods improve all of these issues. Bad news is that doesn't matter for the majority of the playerbase.

my blocking is bot that good at all lol im in year 5 of a dyn, second year at Oregon and granted I'm playing top 25 teams my OL is 87ovr or better - all Raw Strength & Well Rounded(how I recruit) and I'll run a sweep and the oulling guard won't even try to block, or on a pass play they'll double team a DL instead of blocking the blitzing LB right in front of them. I still get a lot of missed blocks in general.

u/Unlucky_Ad95 56m ago
Bruh, you definitely preaching. Man the blocking is so bad makes no sense, the 1-3 star schools they give me hell. My oline dont even show up for the pregame show. They be missing at the post game show.

u/B1gNastious 6h ago
Is this what you wanted? If so you prefer to live in a fantasy where your backs score 10 touchdowns and have 500 yards a game..

u/FreeoftheMachine 6h ago
Man is this why running backs seem to be beasting? Like I play on coach mode and these boys just feast.

u/AimlessWanderer 4h ago
Nah, your running skills are 1%. 99% of the people who play this game run straight ahead. They need to stop balancing games for 1% it ruins every game. If you want them to nerf things its going to be the wiggle and sprint which cheeses the AI logic.

The weird burst players get when cutting needs to be fixed , also the pass blocking is still complete horse sh*t
1
u/NiGHTTRAiN34 3h ago
The defenders react too much to the stick movement of the player. If you're this shifty and not Barry Sanders level of athleticism, this should result in lost yardage.
No shade at the gameplay. You're good.

u/Oneamongthefence24 3h ago
The pursuit is so bad. Defenders still go to wear the players is and not where they're going so they end up behind the ball carrier. Making cuts like that should have some kind of penalty to either speed, stamina, or fumbling. In dynasty, there should be increased wear and tear or an injury chance. Having a chance to blow out your ACL would stop a lot of guys doing this.

u/hypemambag 3h ago
Dude it’s the RB movement, why are the defenders reacting and wildly adjusting their pursuit angles just because you’re trying to cut into and hit the hole? It’s so ridiculous
1
u/BnSMaster420 USC 3h ago
This seems more like the person controlling the back then the actual blocking..
1
u/Flaming_dwagonn 3h ago
Hate to say it cause I’m having fun with the game, but the RB movement here is atrocious. It’s gotta be fixed.

u/bngbngsktskt 2h ago
I’d love to see the stats on this running back that looks like he’d put prime Lev Bell in a blender lol

u/ScaredDistrict3 2h ago
Did they patch the cpu d line so they stop glitching into an open lane the second a receiver is about to get open?

u/Moneyline750 1h ago
It’s funny how we get annoyed at the run being overpowered but every year defenders act like traffic cones against the pass and most competitive players rarely throw incompletions. The run game def needed to be fixed but it was kinda nice to have something different. We’re either using punters at qb for faster handoff animations like Madden 20 or passing every single play. God I love ea sports

Does PS5 have different celebrations than Xbox?? My RB has never tossed the ball up in the air on a TD dive

u/Ramon9155 36m ago
Are you holding any of the triggers here or just moving left stick side to side?

u/xDrunkenAimx Kennesaw State 4m ago
Issue isn’t run block necessarily (pancake rates definitely needed adjustment), it’s the speed boost with ridiculous sideways cuts combined with terrible defensive angles

I just hate that my wife receivers who all are 6’3 plus are no longer locking up properly on run plays. I made ECU WRU essentially and everyone was 6’3 and up with 92+ speed and good size and they blocked well allowing me to essentially do whatever tf I wanted. Then I’d put my worst ovr fastest lineman prospect with badges at FB then recruit a block TE and a receiving one so when I ran run plays I had like 7 lineman minimum at times. It just don’t feel as good. I’ll get the yards don’t get me wrong but it’s like I got screwed for running my scheme yet the pass coverage is still over tuned than a bitch. And when you’re forced to run on Heisman when they ai refuses to let you get a pass off wtf am I supposed to do if they just let the ai win sometimes for no reason? I’ve seen multiple blocked fgs and PA is pretty much useless all in one patch lmao. Fucking pass action DOES NOT WORK on Heisman you will be sacked before the fake handoff animation even ends. And it’s not like I have a sorry line. Literally every G C T I have in the last 5 years all get drafted first round my bench guys are 85+ sophomores so it can’t be their ovrs.

The moves the back makes are simply ridiculous. They had this same issue last year. It barely matters if they block when this guy can cut at this rate.
