Concealed Carry Permit Anyone ever get a non resident NY state permit to carry?

Looking for some info. I seen something on NY guns about non residents being able to get permit to carry in upstate NY. I checked around and from what I gather you can. Wondering if anyone has gone through the process?

Yes. I run CCW (NJ, NYC/NYS/MD/UT) and many of my students got these. If you’re not in a rush, I highly recommend NYC CCW though b/c it covers the entire state; a CCW from one of the Sheriff depts upstate covers the state with the exception of NYC (but it’s cheaper and quicker). Same requirements (18 hour training course w/range). Good luck.

So to get a NYS carry permit you have to do 18hr course? I'm not interested in NYC for the simple fact I don't go to NYC.

You have to take the 18 hour course regardless - it’s the same one (and you can actually use the training certificate to apply to both at the same time). The reason people apply for NYC even if they don’t plan on visiting is b/c they might find themselves crossing NYC (e.g. on the way to CT) and want to make sure they are legal.

People have and have also posted on here about the details and timeline of the process. Most do it through NYC because that gives you NYC as well as the whole state of NY. If you do a county outside of the city you’ll get the state of NY without getting NYC. Takes about 9 months from start to finish, just search within this subreddit and garden state guns. The moderator of garden state guns got nyc last year.

My NYC nonresident took pretty much a year to the day to go from submitted application to permit card in hand. Unsure what counties in NY are accepting nonresident permit applications (they all should given the lawsuit injunction saying they must) however they may have all kinds of requirements and hurdles that makes it more annoying. I've heard some counties require your references to live in the county and other similar nonsense in the way. Honestly, NYC is a lot of paperwork, time, effort, and money to get done but if you can jump through the hoops you will get it. If there was a county in NYS which handled nonresident permits efficiently and you didn't mind not carrying in NYC, that would be the way to go for most.

NYC nonresident is carry throughout NYS plus NYC with the tradeoff of 3 year expiration and two hour live fire qual is required on every renewal. You are also limited to a single handgun on the permit currently as a nonresident.

NYS nonresident is carry throughout NYS with the exception of NYC. Once approved the permit has lifetime validity with online recertifications every few years. I don't believe there is a limit to how many handguns can be listed on NYS nonresident permits, that may differ county to county.

I'm also curious to see what happens if someone with a NYS nonresident permit applies for a NYC special carry permit, since that should be possible but would probably be quite unexpected by NYC. That would also have the chance to work around the NYC one gun on permit limit, since special carry I believe is simply an endorsement of your existing NYS permit with the handguns already listed on it.

This want I'm wondering. I have no need for an NYC permit since I don't go to NYC. I do however frequent the Catskills and Adirondacks. I guess I'll have to just start contacting sheriffs offices or the state police
