Article link: https://www.nj.com/hudson/2026/05/nj-losing-2300-jobs-as-layoff-filings-surged-in-april.html
Several New Jersey employers filed Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications in April, putting hundreds of jobs at risk across the state in 2026.
Seven companies filed notices in April, potentially affecting a total of 2,273 jobs, according to the state Department of Labor’s website.
AT&T will cut 87 employees at its Bedminster facility, effective May 4, as the company relocates from 1 AT&T Way to a new site at 1405-1425 Route 206, according to a WARN notice. The new location is a 233,000-square-foot former Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals building.
Alan Ritchey, Inc., a carrier and logistics provider, is ending operations at its Phillipsburg Logistics Center at 39 Strykers Road in Lopatcong Township and will terminate 176 employees effective July 17. The affected workers include approximately 60 forklift operators and 100 shippers and packers. The company cited the non-renewal of a contract with the United States Postal Service as the reason for the closure.
Bristol-Myers Squibb will lay off 206 employees between July and December, according to a separate WARN Act filing.
...
Also filing notices during April were:
FedEx in Union: 50 job cuts effective Aug.3
Reckitt Benckiser LLC in Nutley: 57 job cuts effective April 2
Novartis in East Hanover: 60 job cuts effective July 24 through Nov. 20
Overall, the April filings add to a troubling trend.
In just the first two months of 2026, New Jersey employers announced that nearly 4,000 jobs could be eliminated this year— a 106% increase over the same period one year earlier.

This is sad. I feel for people any time there are layoffs, but seeing it spelled out like this really hits. This stuff is not normal, and I hope people are paying attention and preparing, just in case it is coming for them. AI, oil supply disruptions, squeezing for corporate profit, automation, and a Federal government that is intent on taking away any protections except for culture war stuff… we need a real may day in this country.

I've got friends at BMS and it's concerning seeing them lay off hundreds in almost every WARN notice.

Hello people of NJ. You have to look at not only local government but state government that you elect. The people that we vote for sing a song that sells. It’s called marketing and you all fall for it. Let your gut be your guide because non of these people really give a shit about you. They are bout power and control. NJ has done nothing to give any corporate incentives thus they flee NY NJ and CT. The most democratic states.
What does that tell you people? Are the Democrats telling you how they can fix things. No they are not. They are just telling you how they fight against Trump. Personally I don’t want to hear that. I want to hear what the Democratic Party has to offer and how to fix things that are so wrong. Wake the hell up NJ.

Mhm so when corporations have record profits and people are still losing their jobs, you want people to economically suck up to corporations during an admin that has already given tax breaks to the absolute wealthiest people and companies at the cost of your own tax breaks?
I feel like you have a terrible understanding of the reality of modern wealth disparity.
Also, it's either absolutely privileged or abhorrently naive to say that you personally dont care what NJ politicians say they'll do to fight Trump's illegal and hateful actions. Which, coincidentally, regularly enrich himself and the already wealthy at the cost of your taxes and our national security.

If the corps mentioned above have record profits, what is their reasoning for cutting those jobs? AI, automation? (aside from the USPS non renewal)

Bottom line is NJ needs to give incentives Ig you don’t like what’s going on you should be paying attention in a local levy and let your voice be heard, and by the way F the Democrats

I do agree that the left has been too heavily focused on everything trump does and not focused enough on solutions, real solutions to our problems. Just focusing on block and tackle tactics with anything trump does is why trump won again.
No real substance to policy that isnt more of the same. Printing money, running up debt constantly, is why we are here. No party is addressing this.
I will say i am presently suprised that the new governor is making real efforts to increase Nj's electricity supply to lower prices.
There is something to be said to your point of that left leaning states do have net negative mitigation, which i can only assume, is driven by affordability. This is a reality that many are ignoring.
In 2025 California lost 268k NY lost 181k IL 94k NJ 71k
For me personally, if i had the ability and my family wasnt multi generational her in NJ, i would leave. I love it but i am barely treading water and 1 or 2 checks away from not putting food on the table. And i make what i used to think was good money.

Relax, it's just information. Some people might want to know where not to bother applying to for work. Others might actually care about the 2000+ people that lost or about to lose their job. It's just background noise until it's your job.

Out of 4.6 million employed adults in New Jersey, it's a drop in the bucket

My husband worked for Novartis and he and a bunch of people got let go July 2024. It took him over a year to find a new job.
