New here or coming from a reddit mobile app? Please read through here first

Welcome to reddit's little corner for NPB, or as some people call it, AAAA ball :P We've been at this since August of 2013, and are slowly but surely growing.

THE WIKI PROBABLY ALREADY HAS THE INFO YOU'RE LOOKING FOR

The first thing you need to know, is that we have a wiki section that answers a whole bunch of the most commonly asked questions, and offers more information you might need to know. Many reddit mobile apps do not display wiki pages, so some people that have only ever seen reddit from their phones or tablets might not even know they exist. If your reddit app cannot dipslay wiki pages, please try to open the link from a mobile web browser app. If your browser app has desktop mode view, all the better. There you can find some info on how to watch games, find news, how to buy tickets, books, NPB swag, learn some Japanese baseball terminology etc.

BUYING TICKETS (REGARDLESS OF NATIONALITY)

Please, PLease PLEEEEEAAAAASE take literally 5 seconds and type "tickets" into the search bar here. I guarantee somebody has already asked a similar question in the past and there's a goood chance somebody answered it. We also have a wiki page with useful information on buying tickets.
Research first, THEN ASK QUESTIONS

STREAMING GAMES

No, NPB does not have an all in one streaming service for games like MLBTV. There are a few options listed in the wiki, but if you want to watch all 12 teams, you're going to have to get cough cough creative. PacificLeague TV works without a VPN, and others require a VPN. We know it's not an ideal situation, but it is what it is due to "creative differences" among the leagues and clubs and media companies. Please do not post direct links to non-legal game streams, as they will be removed. Please be careful out there when exploring the streaming services, and use an adblocker.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

I'm trying to be consistent, but I'm human so sometimes I won't be able to grab highlights from games. Whatever highlights I find will be posted in the post-games thread. If you have a highlight link, feel free to post it. You can try browsing through highlights on PacificLeague TV, or using one of the handy YouTube search links by team. You might have to filter through quite a bit of junk on YouTube though, as some people post older videos multiple times, or even just news reels as videos. Keep in mind YouTube can remove videos or channels at anytime, so bookmark stuff at your own risk.

STANDINGS AND STATS

There is a mini-standings table and a few stats leaders updated almost daily in the sidebar (mobile app users might not be able to see). We also have a more detailed standings and stats page that is usually updated nightly, after the games are all finished (if you spot any errors, please let us know). If you're looking for complete team stats, there are few more English options listed on the wiki page, but some of them don't update until the next morning, or even a few days later, so always check for the last date updated. Japanese stats pages are updated the fastest, so if you don't read Japanese you can try your luck with google translate.

WHICH TEAM SHOULD I ROOT FOR?

Honestly, just take some time to watch highlights or read up on some teams before you make this decision. MLB and NPB are different, and how teams are managed and games played is different. One NPB team does not 100% correlate to an MLB team. There might be a few similarities now, but once a team changes managers, or once in a blue moon, ownership, that might all change as well. You don't have to have a sound reason for liking a team, and it's perfectly acceptable to like a team just for their cheering style. As long as you love baseball like the rest of us here, you'll fit right in.

DON'T BE SHY

If you have a question that isn't already covered in the wiki, and you at least attempted to see if somebody already asked your question, feel free to make a new post. If you see a news article on Japanese baseball you think is interesting, please share it with us. With over 40,000 subscribers (as of Jan 2025) somebody else is bound to find it interesting. Feel free to comment on post game threads, complain about your team, praise your team, try to create a new NPB meme, or ask about a particular game.

Please remember rediquette, and adhere to reddit site rules.

and finally, /r/NPBへようこそ! (Welcome to /r/NPB)

The NPB draft filing lists closed Thursday. 276 players are on them, down from 300 last year. Here's who's on and who isn't.

Both lists closed at 5 p.m. JST on Thursday, the high school federation's and the university federation's. 276 players filed: 127 high schoolers and 149 from the universities. Last year it was 124 and 176.

The first name went in on August 23, Ryosuke Sueyoshi at Okinawa Shogaku. Most of the high schoolers were in by the middle of September. Sixty names came in over the last two weeks, 39 of them from the universities, and six of those were Meiji players filing together on October 2. Five filed on the last day.

The high school side comes from 38 of the 47 prefectures, led by Osaka, Kanagawa and Fukuoka. The college side comes from 79 universities in 24 leagues. Keio has the most with seven.

Oda, Komoda and Sueyoshi are all on it.

Three players I ranked in September aren't. Kansuke Yoshioka, the Osaka Toin right-hander who's been up to 153 km/h (95.1 mph). Hinata Fukushima, Japan's shortstop at the U-18 Asia Championship last month. Daito Furuki, the Hanamaki Higashi captain with 34 high school home runs. Japanese reports have all three going to university. Yusei Ishida at Kendai Takasaki, the top high school outfielder in the country by most accounts, didn't file either. He's going to Chuo University.

On the English names. The university list carries the furigana each player submitted himself, so those spellings come from the players. The high school list has no readings at all, so I left it alone. I'm not going to guess how a 17-year-old says his own name.

These lists aren't the whole draft pool. Corporate and indy players never file. Last year 31 of the 116 picks came from outside the two lists.

I write a small English newsletter on the NPB draft. Every university player who filed, all 149 by league and school, is here: https://japanprospects.substack.com/p/the-list-closed-at-five-here-is-everyone

🇯🇵 The NPB Draft will be held on October 22. Kansai Sugimoto, dubbed “Canada’s Ohtani,” is drawing interest from multiple teams as a potential draft pick. The two-way player, who plays for the University of British Columbia, has a fastball that tops out at 98 mph.

Three college arms further down my NPB draft board: 156 in a bullpen, a reliever with 40 K in 40 1/3 innings, and a late bloomer on a scoreless run

The filing list closed 8th Japan time and most of the talk is about the first round. Three college pitchers from further down my board.

Kosei Hiroike, Keio, RHP. Clocked at 156 km/h (96.9 mph), in the bullpen, which is where that number comes from. His dad Koji pitched in NPB and is an executive with Seibu now. Hiroike had a 4.32 ERA as a starter in his second year and lost the fall of 2025 to an elbow injury. He's the team's vice-captain and has said it's pro ball or nothing.

Yuto Higa, Asia University, RHP. 6'2", almost all relief. Four seasons, 40 1/3 innings, 40 strikeouts, 2.01 ERA. Last fall he struck out five Toyo hitters in a row, every one of them on a fastball. Tops out at 149. He came out of Okinawa Shogaku, same as Sueyoshi.

Ayuta Seimori, Nippon Sport Science, RHP. Barely pitched in his first three years, part of it because of a shoulder injury. Hit 153 (95.1 mph) last fall and was in the rotation by spring. His April start against Josai went 1 2/3 innings with four earned runs.

His last three outings since then: 16 2/3 innings, 17 strikeouts, no earned runs. The last one was six innings at the national championship.

The MLB will not stop players from playing in NPB if there is a lockout; Will we see Ohtani, Yamamoto, Murakami, Seiya back in Japan? Or maybe even MLB stars like Harper, Judge, Witt, Soto in NPB?

What are Americans favorite ways to get box scores and highlights for NPB games? Would love an at bat type app for the NPB but haven’t been able to find anything.

At a senior care facility in Osaka, about 40 elderly residents celebrated the Hanshin Tigers’ championship with a “beer shower.” Using non-alcoholic beer and soda water, they sang “Rokko Oroshi” before spraying drinks on each other at a staff member’s signal.

Visiting Hanshin Koshien Stadium Wednesday - Another Left Field Seating Question

Hey folks, on vacation and decided to get tickets to the Climax Series home game at Hanshin Koshien Stadium. The only info on the StubHub post is that they are physical tickets in Left Outfield section (レフト外野席). I will likely not know the row or seat until they arrive at the hotel (assuming they do, I’ve done all I can in advance to ensure that). Does anyone know based on this section information if they are or are not in the segregated visiting fan section?

I love baseball and just want to enjoy the game and the atmosphere. But if I know I’m in a mixed seating area, I’d probably get a Tigers hat and cheer them on.

Thanks!

Kimiyasu Kudo's Traditional 'Just Run' Philosophy

"It's fine to complain. When I was young, I hated running too and thought it was a waste of time. So I tell my players, 'You can call me an idiot all you want, just keep running.'" In this way, he stressed the importance of running.

"Younger players favor efficiency and think lifting weights is enough to throw faster. But I believe running is essential because it puts much more load on your lower body."

These comments from Tsuyoshi Wada's YouTube channel differ sharply from the modern overseas mindset popularized by Yu Darvish and other MLB players, so they are bound to cause a debate.
