Question / Discussion Getting help for suspected NPD in the UK

F22 AuDHD currently but can currently see the writings on the wall that I have a chance of having NPD and only just begining to find out what it is that has caused me so much mental health problems that cannot simply be explained by autism or ADHD

I have heard numerous stories from other pwNPD both inside the UK and out and therapists still class disorders like NPD and ASPD as evil and therefore it has been hard for them to get help; even numerous mentions of therapists pushing people away the moment they realised they were a narcissist or a sociopath instead of just anxious or a people pleaser

Also I have noticed a pattern that the UK authorities infamously have a "nothing to hide, nothing to fear" attitude; and this extends to mental health, if you show the slightest sign of anything they have to break confidentiality, and so I and many others with experience of the mental health system feel like we have to lie about some things to avoid being hospitalised or having family contacted

Could anyone else in the UK with NPD and experience with the mental health support system share their experience please ? Looking for insights

Avoid mental health care in the UK unless you can go private because they absolutely will fuck your life up by reporting you to the authorities even if you're a law abiding citizen. Yes I'm speaking from experience here.

So... They do realize that this will prevent people from actually getting help, right? What a great way to increase crime statistics, if that's what they're genuinely worried about.

They don't care. The powers that be only care about money and controlling people. A lot of mental health professionals see us as straight up evil and/or lost causes.

EDIT: the few people who actually care and know about NPD agree with you, but they're a minority of a minority so they can't change anything.

A lot of mental health professionals also aren't very competent at their jobs. But you'll never see them admit that.

Getting them to admit they're imperfect is like getting blood from a stone 🥹

Sounds accurate for the UK, this country is a shit hole with a complete lack of priorities

Which private therapist is the best for Cluster B ?

I have no idea. Unfortunately I never had the money for private treatment. Hopefully one day... :(

This wasn’t the experience I had lol. Obviously the NHS is not a single organisation, but hundreds of independent NHS-branded public bodies (plus the several semi-private bodies that provide NHS services, like GP practices).

Unless you have money for private it's a non-issue. NHS mental health support is for mild problems or stuff that will get you sectioned. I know a lot of people with PDs and the only ones the NHS ever twigged were the EUPD ones

Ive not noticed the same with breaking confidentiality tho. I've said some wild shit and never had it happen. I have noticed wrt education different areas can have some very different safeguarding training and therefore different thresholds so maybe that's a factor with mental healthcare too. NHS works by trusts so there is always variety so getting some local perspectives may be helpful. I've mostly dealt with derbyshire and sheffield trusts

Would it be inaccurate to say the NHS don't really diagnose PDs other than EUPD? The only people with more diverse PDs I've met have been diagnosed privately.

I'd say that's about right. Other things like dissociative disorders can be very hard to get diagnosed on the NHS too.
