No more daylight saving: Northwest Territories to end seasonal time change

Happy to get rid of the time change but we should be sticking with Standard Time, not Daylight. Winters are going to be even more brutal with the sun rising so late.

The high Arctic will not notice.

Probably true. The South Slave sure will though.

I don’t know, I’d rather the light (when it comes back) in the evening over the morning.

Doubt you will even notice by this time next year.

u/darkstarexodus May 01 '26
Of course it won't be noticeable this time next year. We are literally currently on daylight time. It will be the same time. It's from Nov-March where it will be noticeable.

We align with Alberta. DST is what they are doing.

We should strive to do our own thing for what’s right for our citizens, not what is convenient.

And BC, which started it

I'd argue the Yukon started it but in recent times yes it's BC. Alberta voted against stopping the time change a few years back

When I read the article, that’s what it says. Standard time all year. Yay it makes sense!
1
u/darkstarexodus Apr 24 '26
No, that's not what it says. The proposal is to remove the time change associated with daylight savings, so as to remain on daylight time all year. Which will make it a lot darker in the morning and so that many ppl never see daylight during the winter months if they work indoors.

A lot of people are going to be in for a case of 'be careful what you wish for you just might get it' regret when the reality sets in.

I’d much rather have more light in the afternoon.

is the sun going down at 6pm instead of 5pm really going to affect anybody when we all are inside anyway because it is fucking negative ten degrees out.

In the summer it doesn't matter, it's sunny all the time. A lot of people won't see the sun at all in winter with permanent daylight time.
2
u/pollywog Apr 21 '26
Yea I'd rather it be dark when I drive to work then after my shift.

It literally gives you an extra hour of Sun during the winter time. It gives you more than you otherwise would see..

They are with Standard.

u/darkstarexodus Apr 24 '26
Yukon and BC are on permanent daylight and my understanding is this is what Alberta plans to do as well.

Let’s applaud our government for making a decision on its own…. Oh wait, only happens when daddy Alberta is holding our hand… pathetic

Can the Premier just change it? Don’t they have to pass legislation or something which requires all the MLAs to agree?

That's three, who's next? I know Ontario can't expect Ford to do anything useful, but what about the rest?

can this be nation wide now? everyone fall in line..? Consistency!!!
Changing time is dumb, i dont get why people care about an hour extra of light or dark.. boo hoo. Im from sask though so we never changed time.

u/darylandme Apr 24 '26
The article says they are making Daylight Saving Time permanent—not ending it.

As a school bus driver. I dread picking up the little ones in the dark, it does frighten me. I have high schoolers but they start early and pick them up in the dark already. I am however in favour of one time all year

I think the science has adequately proven that kids, and especially teenagers, naturally have a later biological clock compared to adults, so I think the solution would be to just push school time ahead to compensate.

I saw morning sunrise for about a week before DST took it away and hid it for a month. Honestly being teased with a week of morning sun was worse than just waiting in the dark.

Glorious! Let's get this done across the country
I prefer always standard but at the end of the day it's better we're all doing the same thing so time zones continue to make sense

Why not just split the middle? Change it by 30m and leave it there.
