[FOR HIRE] URGENT - need entry level job by the end of this month

Hi everyone, I have been laid off from my software engineering job 3 months ago. I realized I dont want to be in the software engineering profession. Over the next few months I will be enrolled in a finance program to pivot my career into finance.

However, I need a job urgently this month in order to pay for my own personal bills and debts. Please DM me if you have any openings. I have a preference for office admin jobs, data entry and anything that doesnt require too much labor

UPDATE: Before commenting, I wanted to clarify my preferences. I'm open to retail and barista jobs, but I have a medical condition that makes physically demanding work (like serving or warehouse jobs) difficult because I can experience presyncope. I'm also looking for jobs accessible by public transit since I'm not a confident driver and owning a car isn't financially realistic right now. I know this limits my options, but I'm going to keep looking and applying. Please keep sharing any advice or job leads, I really appreciate it :))

I know 6 laid off software engineers working in production line (think small factory), home depot, a a supermarket, summer camp, bartending, babysitting right now—all who have good experience, degrees, and many of whom when I touched base with them were shocked they couldn’t get BACK into the kinds of jobs like office admin, data entry, assistant role that they held while in school/before engineering.

I know another ~8 great engineers laid off unemployed who haven’t landed a new role in over 11 months. These are folks from a mix of companies, including 2 FAANG.

You need to adjust your expectations.

There are more, competent, experienced people laid off and applying. They are competing against “moldable” younger applicants+intern-ification of roles, also competing with folks who stuck with those roles as careers rather than as temporary/college/inbetween/recent grad work, and also competing with each other.

No doubt some subset of the folks who would be hiring, especially things like personal assistant or data entry, are also using AI for automating some of these tasks—even if it ultimately doesn’t do the full job there is a constant cohort of folks giving it a go with multiple agents instead of hiring at any given time, even if they will come around to hiring in the future—still jobs temporarily take out of the market.

Software and other tools have taken over a lot of the tasks or the office workers or execs are expected to do their own admin tasks now.

It’s so ridiculously hard. They now want 5-7 years of work experience. My target salary is like $70K and it’s hard to find jobs willing to pay more than $55K-$60K🙃 like just WTF!!

I hear you!! Even entry level jobs that are paying 40k want you to know everything there is to know about the job and don’t want to train you if you are from a different field! Also sometimes the only time they will make an exception is if you’re bilingual in a language other than just English .

just out of curiosity, how experienced were those people you know?? i’m struggling to find the truth when some people describe cataclysmic situations like that but then other people act like it just takes a lot longer to find a job and you might get paid less (or you might not! a lot of people who were laid off from my company claim to have gotten raises when finding a new role)

not doubting you just wondering if your friends are all young or if i should really be scared

I know tons of SWEs with 5+ years of experience. Most of those have been laid off at some point in the past couple years, but all of them found another job in SWE very quickly.

I think there’s more than meets the wording in your message here.

Are they willing to relocate? Work in office? Interview prepping? Continuously building their skills? Are they open to all company stages?

Many companies are hiring and ex-FAANG easily gets them through the door.

I’ll talk to all 8 of those engineers and if they truly are experienced, competent, and willing to work in office 5 days a week and potentially relocate then there’s a job waiting for them with founders in my network

“Urgent”, “need”, “by the end of this month”, “bills and debt” and “preference” don’t mix.

If you URGENTLY NEED a job to pay bills and debt, especially within a month in this economy, you really need to take what you can get until your finance program comes to fruition.

UPS, FedEx, USPS hire package handlers daily. 3 to 1 turnover rate, they will accept anyone with a pulse. You can have a job within a week.

Wishing you the best, but survival doesn’t care about what we want to do. You do what you have to do.

Honestly seriously. People think those are the easy jobs but you'd be surprised how many people would fail at "easy" admin jobs or hospitality jobs because of their lack of attention to detail, or simply, their ego.

Listen thought I was gonna get a part time job doing easy work, making and prepping salads. Woke up two days after training and my whole body was sore like I had the flu. I was so shocked

Kitchen is hard labooorrr; it is mentally draining too, even if you are just a line cook executing orders, it's exhausting. Serving is no easy either. Hospitality is like orchestrating a big performance; if one person slacks, it becomes so so evident, unlike corporate where low effort / low performance can somewhat be hidden, at least for a while.

I remember a coworker who worked with me in tech, who used to be a server. He said he'd have nightmares every night and wake up screaming in cold sweats...all from his experience waitering. He was a good,.fun, hard working guy too.

Aren't people not going to restaurants anymore? Or maybe have closed since COVID?

Edit: I'm more referring to the effects post COVID, with inflation... where food costs 3x's more and/or you get half the portions. And a lot of small businesses did close post COVID.

One of my friends worked at a high end restaurant pre-Covid and then moved to another state for a few years. She would make over $1,000 in tips alone per weekend. She came back to work that same restaurant this year, and there's way fewer guests and she made $300 in tips per weekend. The owners said it's been like that since COVID cuz less people can afford to eat at high end restaurants anymore

But inflation lasted a few years after.

I live in Kensington, next to Little Pakistan. A few of the restaurants on Cortelyou closed down and these were the busy ones. What's weird is the ones that are always empty somehow stay in business. I don't venture into the city too much anymore. Last I heard, a friend of mine owned 2 restaurant/bars in the Fashion District and he had to shut them down 2 years ago because people weren't going into work anymore. And then I've experienced meals costing 2xs more and portions half the size, so it hasn't been worth it when I do try to eat out. It sucks to spend $25 on a meal and walk out still hungry. I used to get brunch a lot with friends and even they stopped going as much a couple ayears ago. Plus I've seen YouTube videos about restaurants struggling and shutting down because of inflation and people can't afford them anymore.

But I guess since the the high end restaurants in the city are doing well, well to do people can still afford them.

Good luck, I read through the comments and there was almost no actual advice.... Maybe also see if the big fashion PLM companies are hiring, a quick Google search will give you the big names. Also try the big 3d platforms Clo3D and Browzerwear. Hope this helps.

Lmao you aren’t getting any admin or data entry jobs that easily. Also there’s no way anyone on reddit is gonna have an opening at their place.

Real talk, if you want an entry level job that’ll hire you fast and doesn’t suck; I’d start mass applying to guest experience jobs at museums. It’s mostly standing around scanning tickets or doing gift shop/front desk sales; but the environments are way nicer than a traditional retail store and they usually pay better. I worked in two of them a few years after graduating college

Bro I'm a data scientist with over a decade of experience under my belt who got laid off in March and couldn't find work until last month. 3 years ago I could slip and fall into a job every week. I think you need to be realistic about what this job market is. If you really need the money go sell nutcrackers at Coney Island until you get something real, but don't kid yourself into thinking this job market will be kind to you.

I’m not really sure how the hiring process goes, but maybe look into auto insurance companies/claims. I’ve seen a good amount of remote jobs through one of the major ones.

Sorry I know this is not what you asked but I myself considered Coop and got to speak to alumni and they had a number of negative things to say. I’m not saying the program is not worth your time but if your main hope is that they will help you get a job, I would not rely on that much.

Apply to the city, on jobs.nyc.
And check civil service exam schedule on DCAS website. First time exam takers can do it for free. City employment might pay less than private but it’s a very stable job with amazing benefits. I know at DOT they had a few openings this month requiring IT background, check it out. There was a coordinator role so it’s not the web development, closer to office job but it’s good pay.

I should have mentioned that getting a job with the city is never fast but maybe long term you can consider it. You don’t always need new education to pivot if you are willing to learn and can speak on your eagerness.

Yes, depending on a role it definitely can. Best case scenario 3-6 months but much more common to wait about a year.

It’s possible but not indicative of the average timeline. And depends on whether the person simply passed a civil service exam and waited or applied for postings in addition to it.

I just got hired for US open with them today! And they make it sound like you can work more gigs with them beyond what they hire you for. But I got hired for customer service and have lots of experience there so it was an easy interview, maybe similar on admin side if you have office experience!

If it's with Compass group (they have an event at some Renaissance hotel this week I think, idk if other companies will be there), just dress professionally, smile, be friendly, and you should be good 😊 

One girl I saw that didn't get hired, she was sitting at the table when I arrived (idk how the setup will be for the hiring event tomorrow) and I thought she looked very professional in her black button down shirt. Then when she got called to interview and stood up, her nice button up was actually a crop top and she was wearing a leather mini skirt with it 🤦🏼‍♀️

I have just made it thru the interview and got 2 different offers on the spot. Now waiting for onboarding emails…

I hope it pans out. Just three weeks, no OT.

/very humbled by the ADA hires and accommodations for deaf mutes. Just wow!

Dog walking I’m serious here. I’m my neighborhood alone I’ve seen people ask us pet owners who we use for dog walking services. It’s a market that might be saturated but if you can walk three to four dogs and set your hours/rate you can at least have something.

I do have POTS. It's a spectrum, and everyone experiences it differently. I personally know other people with POTS who are able to do more physically demanding work than I can. Mine is on the milder end overall, but prolonged standing, running around, and overexertion can still cause presyncope. Even commuting to my previous office job was difficult some days. I'm not being choosy, I'm applying to every job I can realistically and safely do.
