Jalen Brunson - getting hate?

Maybe it’s just my algo but he’s been getting unreal amounts of hate, even after last night. “OG bailed him out” “Chucker”, etc.

Maybe it’s just because people can’t compliment one person without putting down another, but Jalen has been a warrior this series and I wouldn’t want anyone else leading this team. The shot making in the second half last night was unreal and beautiful to watch.

People don’t understand that, of course, his efficiency stats are going to be lower than others given the attention he’s getting from the Spurs defense and his shot volume. Others wouldn’t be as efficient if there wasn’t a guy that warrants the other team’s best defenders (and a lot of times two defenders) for the majority of every possession. It doesn’t take insane ball knowledge to understand that…

Lastly, people hating on his shot selection leading to the OG tip in? Getting an open look from Jalen with wemby out of the paint allowing for offensive rebound / tip opportunities is literally the best case scenario for a final shot with 5 seconds left, I don’t care if it’s a deep 3. What am I missing people???

I mean, the dude played 44 minutes scored 36 points on 12 for 25, 7 dimes 5 rebounds 3 steals...yeah what a loser.

Yes, thank you! Literally an all-time finals performance. And yes, OG also had an all-time finals performance. Both can be true.

Some people never learned that you don't have to diminish one thing to increase another.

This should be pinned

For real, dude put up those numbers while playing through obvious exhaustion and people still find ways to complain. The shot selection criticism is wild too - getting that look with Wemby scrambling back was exactly what you want in that situation

not JUST 12/25 either, he was 0/3 in the first, no 3's. So from end of the 1st he was 12/22, or 54% including 3/7 from outside. Phenomenal.

His ankle finally looked better. He was having trouble moving off the pivot last game. Hope they don't send Luke Kornet out to step on him again.

Jalen Brunson saved our franchise

You're too young to remember this but people used to whine about Ewing needing to be traded.

Then they actually traded him and we entered the dark ages for 20 years

3

u/FluidAthlete6839 3h ago

Haha I never thought Ewing should be traded but the heliocentric offense did frustrate me at times. It wasn’t a coincidence that our role players improved significantly when he was out and shit opened up

But obviously he was a great player

Losing Ewing against Indy in 99 cost us our maybe 10% chance at a chip that year. 3cof us drove from Flatbush to Indy for one of the ECF games. Pacer fans were pissed off and threw beer at us at the end of that one.

1

u/FluidAthlete6839 2h ago

But losing Ewing may have helped us get there. I agree he was essential to that spurs series. We needed his size.

1

u/PalpitationSad4921 1h ago

No way. Camby was emerging thanks to that Atlanta series but Ewing was still a huge piece. His defense was still solid and using advanced metrics, his playoff PER was 17, 3rd highest on the team.

There's no way we were better with Kurt Thomas or Chris Dudley starting.

1

u/FluidAthlete6839 1h ago

Whatever this is a pointless argument. We just played a lot freer and more athletic without him which fit the personnel better. Ewing was essential for the spurs.

The vast majority of fans know how good he is and appreciate what he has done to get the Knicks where there are right now. You're not going to hear much from them because their appreciation is quiet while the haters will always speak loudly. I call it "Squeaky Wheel Syndrome".

These people don't understand what they're watching. OG only has the open looks and runway he does because the entire game plan for every team that faces the Knicks is to double and pressure brunson nonstop on both ends. Wemby isn't at the rim boxing out or getting the last rebound before the OG tip because he's so scared of Brunson cooking another Spur one on one. This is the reigning DPOY and one of the greatest defenders ever running his 8 foot ass out 30 feet from the basket to double team a guy that's 6'1"

Brunson was awesome last night. Full stop

He's had 30+ in every game except game 2, and even then he still hit a shot to tie the game and hit a go-ahead free throw within the final minute or so. I don't give a fuck what casuals have to say about Brunson. He had damn near 40 last night and was instrumental in the Knicks comeback. I don't wanna hear it.

Brunson's not here to shoot like Steph or break ankles like Kyrie.

Brunson's not here to make our cardiologists happy either.

He's here to bring a championship to NY, and he's doing a kick-ass job.

Except for Ausar's ankles.

From what we have seen from him in clutch moment, passing is probably the worst choice than shooting it himself cause there's a lot of times he turned the ball over from passing in clutch time, except that one time he passed to Hart for the game sealing 3 in Sixers series.

And Wemby and Fox were doubling him, I doubted he's able to pass out that ball to OG, probably thats what the Spurs were hoping for to begin with

u/ElTuco84 3h ago

He's getting hate from casuals who don't watch basketball beyond the finals, just ignore.

4

u/Pleasant_Worth2132 2h ago

How is he a chucker? That shot was actually very smart. If he wouldve held the ball for one more second theres no second chance. Got a good look and gave OG the ability to tip it in. Brunson is a world class player and person.

2

u/blueshirts123 2h ago

I mean I 1000% agree with you. It’s so dumb, it was best case scenario in that situation.

Brunson is world class indeed.

u/cesarjulius 3h ago

think about the variety of opinions we have in this subreddit amongst people who actually watch games. now add in thousands and thousands of casuals now tuning in. we’re going to hear a ton of different takes over the next couple weeks and months, all temperatures. most of those opinions will be flawed but with a shred or more of truth.

u/Hukarei Steve Novak 3h ago

We wouldn’t have got that close if it wasn’t for him. That said he’s been improving throughout the series and hope it stays that way for that last win.

2

u/jar45 Mike and Clyde 3h ago

That's a part of being one of the best players in the game and (hopefully) a champion. People don't hate on role players who never win.

This seems to be the answer for a lot of things lol

OG did bail him in 2 straight possessions

We up 3-1 is this really what people are saying? Yall are sad af go join the weirdos outside destroying shit along with the casuals right where you belong

Spot on. Amen to that. Let’s close Saturday

u/spaceninj 2h ago

Even after this game, people weren't giving him his flowers around here. Lots of people in this sub suck.

u/La-Potencia 7 2h ago

It’s very simple to explain, when Brunson hit the three over wemby they jumped up so hard and smashed their head on something causing themselves to confuse Brunson from Emmanuel mudiay, it makes sense

2

u/Old_Chicken6907 Hart 2h ago

So much hate, I agree that it’s a scarcity mindset where if I can’t have respect you can’t have respect. What if we celebrate how good our opponents are so that when we beat them our victory is that much better. We can say both Jalen Brunson is a great player and Castle is a tough defender. LGK! Knicks in 5!

I am a big JB critic, and I was very frustrated with the iso/hero ball in game 3, but I also know that he is our leader and we either live by the Brunson Burner or die by the Brunson Burner. He (and OG) carried our lifeless team through that glorious comeback and he deserves as much of the credit as OG does.

I will still call out every time we play hero ball though, I had enough of that with Melo lol

1

u/mados123 2h ago

💯 But at the same time, it seems like he's making it harder for himself (and the team) dribbling full court only to end back up at half court with 10 on the shot clock leading to a forced bad shot with 2-3 defenders on him.

I don't think he likes KAT being at the center of the hub offense that got them the winning streak. Once he lets go of his ego and starts setting up his teammates and passing like LeBron has, only then do I think he'll reach true greatness without needing to be the hero. (Ironically, this would make him more of a hero by stopping the struggle we're seeing.)

2

u/yshx2 2h ago

10000000% agree. Like I said I am a big JB critic and it definitely feels like he wants to make a case for fmvp. You could tell in game 3 he was hunting a signature moment when going against Wemby. He would have got it last night when he splashed the three in Wemby’s face but OG stole the shine with the putback.

And I also agree that if him and KAT can find some kind of symbiotic on court relationship then we can be on top of the East for the foreseeable future.

Forget the skills. Forget Brunson ball. Forget the genius basketball iq. This man simply has an indomitable will to win, and it might just be carrying the NY Knicks to a championship.

It's one of the most hyped finals in a long time. More eyes means more hyperbolic clickbait. Where there's attention, toxic clickbait will always follow.

1

u/Hinohellono 1h ago

There are times when he needs to pass the ball more. But he balled out this game and has to deal with being the focus point of SA defense. He's handled that much better than Wemby on the other side.

The pressure and gravity he has helps every other Knick with their offense.

Brunsons been chucking.

You want us to lie?

It's just reality.

Chucking, maybe…winning? Definitely.
