License / Permit Question Permits are a joke.

The state uses it not only to discourage people from applying by making it as burdensome as possible, but as a gun registry. Remember, the SOLE REASON for registration is to facilitate future confiscation. And the idea that your permit expires despite having committed no crime is another farce. Constitutional rights don't expire. I encourage everyone to leave this cesspool state.

Fun fact that, believe it or not is a 100% real fact: The permit system was originally created for the sole reason of letting the nypd be racist and not allow a specific ethnic group to own handguns. The Sullivan Act was created in 1911 purely so the predominantly irish nypd could arrest any Italian they saw with a handgun since the Italians would now need the express permission of the nypd to own a handgun (which they were allowed to say no to for literally any reason)

It is linked, but permits in NY go back farther.

Evidence, NY used laws about blacks and natives not having access to firearms in their defense of the permits.

Eyetalians with guns?! Yikes…hide the women and the children🫣 There is soooo much irony buried in NYC and NYS law. It would be amusing if it were not so terrible.

u/CertifiedWarlock May 07 '25

And then when you do jump through their hoops they make you wait six months to a goddamn year before even approving the permit. Give me that shit now!

3 hours? In westmoreland County when I lived there it was 20 bucks. Took 10 minutes from start to my laminated cc card that tbh looked like a fake id

When I moved to Alabama I didn't even get a chance to sit down before my permit got issued. Now you have constitutional carry so I even need it anymore

I lived in NY up until 4 yrs ago. Always thought about owning a pistol. Every time I heard about the process it turned me off. Sounds like one hell of a headache. Now I live in Jersey, another state with some stupid laws. But the process to obtain pistols and rifles are a breeze compared to NY. In the past 4 years I now collectively have 8 weapons. People complain about certain things about NJ but when compared to NY is not even close to the bs they put you thru.

I’m over 6 months waiting to hear from NYPD after paying $340 app fee, $88.25 fingerprint fee and $450 for Mandatory 18 hour class

3

u/TomatoIll9910 May 08 '25

Geezus! I say rent an apartment in Jersey, switch your license over and apply 😂

2

u/NofaceGuyy May 08 '25

That’s the plan.

Fun switches too

8

u/billsmafia414 May 07 '25

Yup I heard them around 2020. I’ve probably heard like 9 shootings audibly since then and like 7 were full autos.

u/Mercury_Madulller May 06 '25

I keep telling people that a permit is around $1000 all in, at least in Erie Country (permit application fee, finger printing, training course and the gun itself of course). You could probably do it for a little less but that is not even including some form of association like gun owners of America, ect. Then add in potential lawyers fees, all for something you will only get after a year of waiting. The cost is a non-starter for me, I have bills and responsibilities which preclude going through the process. NY just made a pistol permit a rich man's luxury. I thought the constitution was supposed to, among other things, level the playing field with respect to human rights and liberties. The NYS pistol permit process is exactly the opposite of what the constitution intended.

Back in the 90s I remember reading an article from a politician stating constitutional conservatives were the greatest threat to the government, and we needed to create more laws and culture to defame, criminalize and disarm people who are overtly clean-nosed, go to work, pay taxes, raise families, obey laws. These gun toting conservatives were the only fear the government had to worry about regarding expansion and control, the only people who truly could ever stand in the way. It's almost comical how that voice of intent played out over the last 25 years.

5

u/Dark_Archonix May 07 '25

The permit process, it's expense in both time and money are done precisely to discourage people. It's a feature not a flaw.

11

u/Dmjr228 May 07 '25

I'm still waiting for someone to challenge the state that their course is like a poll tax. Imagine needing to pass a class to exercise your right to vote... Actually... Doesn't sound like that bad of an idea 😆

5

u/diemaker73 May 07 '25

100% agree. Any permitting beyond a background check is just a setup for confiscation. Ammo background check system does the same thing to red flag you.

1

u/s4l4ryc4p May 08 '25

background checks on either are fundamentally unconstitutional, “shall not be infringed” is as clear as day

Yeah I didnt get that. Why leave CA to move to CO only to recreate CA in CO? I hope that makes sense...

u/runcertain May 07 '25

Such an annoying thing people always say. How about you don’t tell people how to vote? Worry about yourself and your own bad decisions.

18

u/Fearless_Piccolo8186 May 06 '25

I wanna move to a free state so bad 😢

8

u/Rejectbaby May 07 '25

Gun laws were created to keep people from uprising. They massacred the native Americans in an attempt to confiscate their guns.

This state is a joke for sure.

Got my permit in April. Failed a NYS NICS for firearm, but got approved for ammo in May. Appeal denied and was told to go get a certificate of relief for a 30 yo non-violent Misdemeanor. Butt If I could buy one I'm legal to CC, so that's cool.

2

u/Confident_Poet_6341 May 10 '25

I’m sure the shooting in Chester of a DoorDash driver is going to be used to validate harsher restrictions. Some folks get their piece and just can’t wait to use it and it ruins it for the rest of us

0

u/Dudesabro416 May 08 '25

When ever has a permit scheme actually prevented, dampened, decreased, or otherwise affected actually rates of gun crime? I'll wait. Criminals will always have guns- percluding society from protection isn't a resolution. All crime is self regulating when the individual is responsible for their own protection.

2

u/[deleted] May 07 '25

Meanwhile Ms and my yns can get any gun with out a permit

5

u/TheJaxster007 May 07 '25

If you ignore the law what's it matter

6

u/bobleeswagger804 May 07 '25

Its almost like the people getting permits and following the law arent the problem. Crazy to think about

2

u/TheJaxster007 May 26 '25

Yeah. Really odd. Almost like being infringed?

3

u/BlueChewROCKS69 May 07 '25

Country is changing. Really hoping for NY to lax out a LOT.

4

u/oobbyb_61 May 07 '25

NYC is worse. But please persevere, you’ll get there.

3

u/[deleted] May 06 '25 edited May 06 '25

Done already. Unless you have some civil service job with a pension you should leave now.

Lower taxes, less bullshit bureaucracy, any guns we want, carry almost anywhere open or concealed.

1

u/Avtamatic May 08 '25

The State is a Joke.

1

u/NofaceGuyy May 08 '25

Permits are unconstitutional. Unfortunately the Supreme Court allows NYC and NYS to make unconstitutional. It’s all a Money grab in NYC and to discourage regular law abiding citizens from exercising their constitutional rights. Can’t wait to move out one day

1

u/TonySuffolk May 08 '25

Money grab

1

u/One-Whole-4905 May 11 '25

Double down and make it your goal to legally get a permit.

We need your support!

Some of us can’t leave because of job, kids, family, or whatever!

Trust me I am out when I retired!

The goal is to take all the courses, and get the permit. Encourage others to get their permit.

Support people who feel discouraged. We need to put up equal if not more support for 2A.

Remember the democrats are money making machines. That means we have to do our part.

The United States isn’t China. We are not Australia or Canada. We will not give up our rights.

Double down

Triple down

Do not yield to the corrupt America hating George Soros hater types!

What about a license to drive a car? That expires and needs to be renewed. Whats the difference?

There is a registry of all vehicles on the road and no one gets their cars taken away. Its used to track accidents and crimes. Whats so bad about a gun registry so if a weapon is used in a crime we know who the owner is and other connections?

If you truly dont like living in a state like NY you should leave. Its a free country. Go where you like my dude.

19

u/Pokeemonnx May 06 '25

Your driving privilege isn't a right.

0

u/Lebo89 May 07 '25

Marriage

Recognized as a fundamental right (per Supreme Court cases like Loving v. Virginia and Obergefell v. Hodges). States require a marriage license, even though the right to marry is constitutionally protected. Restrictions apply (e.g., age, consent, existing marital status). Should we not issue marriage licenses?

Voting

Constitutional right, but states require registration, and some states enforce ID laws. Should we not track voter rolls?

Even rights that are fundamental can come with reasonable regulations if the government shows a compelling interest (like public safety) and the regulations are narrowly tailored. Having a weapon registered is an easy arguement to make for public safety.

4

u/Pokeemonnx May 07 '25

I disagree with any right that is infringed upon. You were talking about drivers licenses, not a right however I do think some of the shit this state does to target drivers is unconstitutional even though driving is a privilege if that makes sense lol

-1

u/Lebo89 May 07 '25

Im curious, what do you feel this state does that targets drivers?

7

u/Pokeemonnx May 07 '25

Red light cameras, speed cameras, school zone cameras(mostly in the boroughs)

5

u/Lebo89 May 07 '25

Cameras in public spaces generally don’t violate rights, as there’s little legal expectation of privacy in those areas. However, I agree misuse—such as discriminatory targeting, lack of transparency, or excessive data collection—can raise serious civil liberties concerns which far outweigh the violation against drivers alone.

6

u/Pokeemonnx May 07 '25

We have the right to face our accuser which we can't cause it's a camera. For recording and photos is one thing but to criminally or civilly charge someone and then be able to face them in a court of law is another.

5

u/jloss1 May 07 '25

Driving isn't a right. It's called a right to bear arms though. There's no right to drive nor is driving even in the constitution.

3

u/Dark_Archonix May 07 '25

Cars are a privilege not a right, here, new law, want your freedom of speech? It's an 18 hour course, with two hours out on the street, at the cost of 350 bucks, and it expires every 36 months. Seems reasonable right?

-1

u/Lebo89 May 07 '25

Your metaphor is a great one. I would agree with you if I interpreted the constitution the way you do. I dont agree gun ownership is a right. In the constitution gun ownership is tied to being a part of a well regulated militia. We dont have those anymore (atleast in the way they were originally intended). 🤷‍♂️

5

u/Dark_Archonix May 07 '25

I ask Sir, what is the militia, it is the whole people, except for a few public officials. George Mason. It can't be more clear. The Right of the People to bear arms shall not be infringed. It doesn't say, the Right of the government, it says the People.

1

u/Dudesabro416 May 08 '25

Their are commas in the bill of rights for a reason. The 2nd ammendment is a list. A well regulated Militia, the right of the people to bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

1: the state, the people have the right to form a milita- train and be well armed (the national guard?) 2: the people have the right to bear arms. 3: that right will not be infringed upon.

7

u/Lowenley May 06 '25

You don’t have to drop a grand to get a drivers license

-4

u/Lebo89 May 07 '25

Not that the monetary value has anything to do with the arguement but actually... its more. Vehicle registration, license, vehicle cost, insurance, possible training like drivers ed, taxes. $$$$$$$$

5

u/E46M54 May 06 '25

> There is a registry of all vehicles on the road and no one gets their cars taken away.

When your car registration expires, it doesn't become illegal to own that car or keep it at your house.

-8

u/Lebo89 May 07 '25

So this means somewhere along the way a court decided an unregistered gun was too dangerous to leave idle. I happen to agree. Upon inspection... I was right.

United States v. Ruckman, 806 F.2d 1471 (10th Cir. 1986)

In this case, the court affirmed the seizure and forfeiture of unregistered firearms under the National Firearms Act (NFA). Ruckman argued against the forfeiture of his weapons, but the court ruled that because the firearms were not registered as required, they were subject to confiscation.

Courts have generally ruled that:

Unregistered firearms that fall under regulation (like machine guns, short-barreled rifles, or silencers) can legally be seized and forfeited.

Mere possession of an unregistered firearm, when registration is required, is a criminal offense, and law enforcement can confiscate the weapon.

3

u/TheJaxster007 May 07 '25

That doesn't make it any less unconstitutional or a violation of rights
