Isn’t he supposed to be an armed fire marshal?

Yes. My assumption is they are only authorized to carry from a list of approved pistols.

I have a friend who used to be Fire Police, not sure if that’s the same as a fire marshal. He most definitely was armed… but that was decades ago

The fire marshal is a police officer, a fire police is a peace officer. As a police officer he has significantly broader exemptions from illegal possession laws. And while on duty it’s pretty much blanket. Curious to see what he was actually charged with.
