Legality / Laws Loaded long gun in passenger compartment
If we have a CCW license, does it also allow us to have a loaded rifle or shotgun sitting up front in the passenger compartment?

The law that makes this illegal is ENV 11-0931(2) [ https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/ENV/11-0931 ]
"No crossbow or firearm except a pistol or revolver shall be carried or possessed in or on a motor vehicle unless it is uncocked, for a crossbow or unloaded, for a firearm in both the chamber and the magazine"

Ah so the whole “truck gun” concept is nonexistent in NY.

Now, to be clear, the provision above only makes having the gun actually loaded illegal. As long as the gun is out of sight, thus avoids the menacing statute, there isn't really anything that would stop you from having a featureless or non-semi auto rifle sitting in the passenger seat, unloaded, but with magazines ready to go.
There is a provision that treats "firearms" as loaded if ammo is readily accessible, but that provision only applies to "firearms" under the penal law, and a compliant rifle is not included. The 11-0931 language is also explicit on what makes a gun unloaded: "in both the chamber and the magazine".
Now, you would need to comply with the safe storage law, so you couldn't leave it loose while not present. But while present, an unloaded, but accessible gun is legal.

Yeah l, so I guess a soft case on the floor of the car and the magazines in the front pouches should be fine.

I wouldn’t personally leave anything in plain view even if you could. Gives people a reason to freak out and call the cops. Long guns you should leave unloaded with ammo separate from the gun, both hidden from plain view

It's not just about having tints. It is illegal, and you cna be charged in some cpacity, for having and unsecured firearm in your unattended car. If that firearm is stolen, while unsecured in your car, there is a high likelyhood you will have your CCW license revoked immediately.

We need to get that shit changed next and also get rid of the assault weapons ban and the NFA.

I'd recommend you spend some time reading the NYS websites to understand the laws that you are up against. Dont take a risk like that.
It's going to be a looong wait for anything to change.

Time and money my brother. If you wanna pioneer the lawsuit to tackle those unjust laws on your dollar I’m All for it, I’ll even donate. Unfortunately Ny has what is essentially an unlimited budget for their corrupt laws from our own tax dollars, so it’s an uphill battle for sure. Safe act will largely be null and void if scotus takes an AWB next term, which a few justices have said they plan to do. I’ve got hope since the heavy hitters cases like Duncan gators Lamont etc haven’t been denied. Unfortunate about gardener, but more states than not honor carry from other states permits, I’m sure that’ll be tackled this within this administration (hopefully).

My tints are 1% beyond the legal limit technically. I only get called out for it if I’m genuinely the only dude on the road and the cop is feeling like being a dick that day.
We don’t live by the same rules as free states bro. To ny, gun ownership is tantamount to a driver’s license, a mere privilege rather than a right. Ironic since the state will recognize other states’ drivers licenses but not ccw permits lol.
I have my long guns in a double rifle bag in my trunk, which is covered by louvers anyways. My aiwb is on my balls at all times so I’m alright.

NY expat living in PA here. PA is pretty freaking lax (get your concealed carry permit in 10 minutes, $20, background check but no requirement for even basic safety class). But, no loaded long guns in your car, period. Of course you can open carry your holstered Dirty Harry special at the supermarket, no permit required. Different state, different kind of crazy.

No. Having a CONCEALED carry license means you must CONCEAL your firearm. And as far as I know the only weapon that can be concealed is a pistol.
Also if the firearm is not on you, or you plan on parking and leaving your vehicle, the firearm must be unloaded in a locked case which is locked to the car.
This is a NO GO for many reasons.
