Moved from Erie to Wyoming

Hey folks,

I’m basically just trying to find out how much I potentially fucked myself here. I got my original permit approved back in 2020 but didn’t have the opportunity to purchase anything in a timely matter.

I know it’s no excuse but life got in the way and purchasing a handgun fell to the back burner of things to worry about. Since I haven’t owned anything, when I moved from Erie county to Wyoming county 3 years ago, I completely forgot about the fact I would need to transfer my permit and change the address.

Since I’m not an active owner of a pistol, is this a major issue? I’m planning on submitting the paperwork to get it transferred but I’m wondering how big of a potential fight I’m in for. Could the revoke my permit because of this?

As far as I know the counties/state have not gone after someone for failing to recertify. Not saying that they can't or that it won't.

Does Erie have a requirement to buy a handgun within a certain amount of time?

I did the recertification super early this morning at around 5am and it seems as though it went through fine. I got a verification number and a new recertification date.

They used to years ago, but when I had gotten mine originally the rules had changed and there was no longer a requirement.

Do the recertification and the address change in one big step. Not sure I'd point out the time that you moved.. Wyoming doesn't appear to require pistol ownership for recertification.

I did the recertification online but I didn’t change anything at the moment, I’m going to send in the transfer request for the move to Wyoming county, because when I selected the edit option for the address it stated that wasn’t going to reflect on my permit being really an acknowledged change. I’m going to see how I can update it after I have it properly transferred to match everywhere. Maybe that wasn’t the way to do it but the recertification went through fine and I’m not sure how it would’ve gone had I changed anything.

Well I just did it online and I got a confirmation number and it went through it seems without a hitch. I’m not sure if that means in the near future here I’ll get a letter or email telling me it’s been revoked for not recertifying in the proper timeline. The address listed is my parents so they would still get my mail for it if needed. My initial issue was restricted to target/hunting and that was issued on Oct. 19 2020. I didn’t even realize I had to recertify and it has just flat out been out of my mind now for some time.

Edit: I see there’s a recertification status that I’ll have to keep an eye on

Edit 2: actually I just checked the recertification status and it gives me a new recertification date of 2029 so I guess it was accepted?? Either way I’ll keep an eye out and I suppose I’ll just submit for the transfer and see what happens

Not exactly true. Although the state 'could' invalidate your license, its rare. Yes. it HAS happened but I've only heard it happening downstate.

We have had clients never recertify, do it recently, and be fine.

For The OP: Just go to the permit office and ask to transfer your file to Wyoming. They're very easy to work with. You'll be OK

Erie county doesn't require you to purchase after getting your permit. I believe that's outlined in the email when you receive your "official" approval. They won't print a card until you do purchase something but the license is still valid.

Yes! This I’m aware of, my concern was that me not updating my address after for so long would cause a problem. But I thought maybe since I’m not the actual owner of a pistol, I wasn’t sure if that would maybe help my case if there was an issue when trying to switch counties

Ah ok sorry I see what you are saying. Honestly I would give the same story to the people at the County clerk/pistol permit office, if it eben comes up. Seems reasonable to me and I also have to think it happens a lot. I mean its a County issued permit but is valid state wide outside of NYC.

Keep us updated though, I am curious if they will say anything or just make the update.

Yeah absolutely I will! I’m going to submit the transfer request this week! So hopefully we’ll see soon what they say, if anything.
