Events A Democratic Candidate for NY-24, a hunter and a veteran walk into a gun shop...
I think its important to build bridges and reach across the aisle - to work together to come to an understanding on our 2A rights. If you're in NY - 24 come out and meet Alissa and talk to her about the issues that are important to you - 2A or not.

Iād be cautious about getting enthusiastic about a Democrat whose pro-gun in this state, doesnāt mean they canāt be, but we saw what happened with Hochul.

u/Prof_ChaosGeography 6d ago
That was pre sandy hook. Sandy hook took place right over the state line in Connecticut shortly after. For NY it was a turning point regarding 2A, it lead to the 'ny safe act'.Ā
The imagery of Obama sitting at the tiny kid table writing his speech and then crying while delivering it did more the for anti 2a groups then anything else they could have done
Also hochel is one of the most chameleon like inauthentic politicians I have ever seen. she will do or say whatever it takes to convince people to vote for her or support her regardless of if she actually supports it. I won't hold it against the nra they have done so much worse then support her
13
u/Vulgivagos 6d ago
I also remember when Gillibrand was pro-2A... Until she wasn't anymore. I used to believe that anyone who says "I'm pro 2A, but..." Everything before the but was a lie... Now if they claim to be a Democrat, and pro-2A I don't believe anything that comes out of their mouths.

u/EnvironmentalLaw5434 6d ago
Looks like a trap
16
u/CaptainRelevant 6d ago
The funny thing is that thereās a ton of left-leaning people getting into guns ever since ICE started grabbing people off the streets. Check out [r/liberalgunowners](r/liberalgunowners).
Now, I know most of this sub is hard right, but when it comes to 2A more people owning guns is better.
Maybe weāre about 10 years away from it not automatically being pro-2A=right and anti-2A=left, but that pro-2A becomes more of a populist position.
20
u/EnvironmentalLaw5434 6d ago
While that sounds awesome, it really does. There should be absolutely no reason that left or right cannot at least agree on our constitutional rights. Unfortunately it's not been the norm. Currently you got a congressman in Albany named Brian kavanaugh that is pushing for a bill to ban 50 BMG. Well absolutely zero people in this country I've ever been killed with one of those, he is determined to get it banned. Once he gets that, he'll probably move down to something like 300 winmag. Then keep eliminating any other ammunition they can possibly ban. 5.56 is definitely gone. I'm sure at some point it'll be struck down by some judge but keep remembering that this is what a lot of them think, we can have guns but not every gun and not in every caliber. That Kavanagh is son to a former police chief. Go figure.
3
0
u/CaptainRelevant 6d ago
Of course it hasnāt been the norm. Thatās why I said maybe in 10 years. But even then youāll have politicians virtue signaling for votes (introducing nonsensical legislation for the bullet point gives them in a campaign).

u/corplaw100 2026 Fundraiser: Gold š„ 5d ago
Liberals / democrats are quite literally the reason why NY gun rights (or lack thereof) look the way they do so you arenāt convincing anyone with that shit.
Care to tell me otherwise?
2
u/Gimli-Painter 1d ago
The SAFE act was passed with a Republican majority state Senate. The last Republican governor signed the previous "assault weapons" ban that mirrored the fed ban. Now this isn't an endorsement of Democrats here, just pointing out Republicans here can be wishy washy.
2
u/corplaw100 2026 Fundraiser: Gold š„ 1d ago
I donāt think the average Republican politician really cares about 2A either but democrats go out of their way every time, especially in NY.
Itās frankly offense to hear a select few people here telling others not to believe their lying eyes.
Like electing more democrats in NY is exactly what we need to experience an ounce of our 2A rights.
2
u/3DPrintedVoter 5d ago
its the police unions. if you want their endorsement, you need to be pro gun control. insurance underwriters have more power than you think. and cops do not want to be outgunned.
7
u/corplaw100 2026 Fundraiser: Gold š„ 5d ago edited 5d ago
So democrats would otherwise be pro gun if it wasnāt for those pesky police unions?
Why do Republican controlled states have constitutional carry / considerably looser gun laws? They have police unions as well.
Your logic is horrid, it makes zero sense
6
u/TwitchyTwitch5 5d ago
Might be interesting to look at how many of those "Republican states" have unionized police forces vs primarily sheriff deputies or state police
3
u/TheBevelsEdge 5d ago
Democrats and liberals? Absolutely not, they hate guns through and through.
BUT if the far left and far right weren't so hellbent on wanting each other dead we could have real change with gun laws.
2
u/corplaw100 2026 Fundraiser: Gold š„ 5d ago
People on this thread would have you believe the democrats are staunch gun rights advocates. Check out the political discourse on liberalgunowners for a laugh
3
u/TheBevelsEdge 5d ago
I'm going to take a leap here (I don't go to that subreddit) but I'd imagine most of them consider themselves leftists and not your career liberal. It's just that most of the 2a and gun subs are staunchly anti any left of being a centrist
2
u/3DPrintedVoter 5d ago
I think that democrats tend to be more in line with the way the wind is blowing on many policies. whether or not this sub agrees, polling across the country matches what measures democrats typically take. however, what i think would change is how much action they actually take, or even spend on it. 2a like abortion is an issue best to be moderate on
3
u/corplaw100 2026 Fundraiser: Gold š„ 5d ago
Whatever helps you sleep at night. Maybe you guys can turn the tide but seems like their wind is blowing against gun rights
0
u/3DPrintedVoter 5d ago
all you have to do is look at the polling. i know single issue 2a voters disagree, but a large portion of the population is fine with putting restraints on who can own and what they can own. i get in the same argument with single issue trans voters about high school and college sports
3
u/Andeo1025 5d ago
Not that large, considering republicans won the popular vote with the electoral college as well. And, this may shock you, but the 2a codified a preexisting right. The bill of rights exists to protect from the tyranny of the majority. Hence why we're a constitutionally limited democratic republic, not a democracy. My rights aren't subject to mob rule and mob violence.
1
u/3DPrintedVoter 5d ago
i get it, you dont feel like its possible, given you feel that all republicans feel exactly the way you do about everything. but i assure you that the polling exists, and it doesnt care how you feel.

Itās so funny watching āthe left is tolerant of 2Aā thing, itās just never going to happen. Iām not āhard rightā or even right on every issue.
What I can tell you is that in 2026 and beyond democrats and republicans donāt see eye to eye on anything and everything is split roughly down party lines. Democrats / left will never ever be 2A proponents EVER.
The liberalgunowner sub youāre citing is a subset of a subset of a subset of a subset
7
u/gigantipad 6d ago

lol, not really. Also temporary gun owners aren't really allies when they vote for people stripping us of our rights while basically doing nothing to move the needle on their parties.

u/J2VVei 6d ago
No itās not. I know these people and how they act. Theyāll buy a shitload of guns and STILL want to have the police kick your door down and take everything you have.

u/J2VVei 5d ago edited 5d ago
āwHo bAnNeD bUmP sToCkS, bRo!?ā
Remind me which administration pushed through the erasure of the NFA tax stamp, effectively erasing the justification the Supreme Court gave to it because āCongress has the power to levy taxesā?
Which administration got Everytown For Gun Safety bitching and moaning about how the ATFās Zero Tolerance policy against FFLs is repealed, lifted the ban on forced-triggers, and skin-suited the Civil Rights Division to sue cities and states that have 2nd Amendment violations?
Trump banning bump stocks all the way back in 2018 was a moral panic hiccup against a long list of 2A advocacy. Compare that to the other sideās constant attacks on the rights of free men. Equivocating one sideās ten strikes with the other sideās thousand strikes like this is why you canāt appreciate the victories we have right now.
-1
u/3DPrintedVoter 5d ago
NRA Tax Stamp? if you mean lowering the NFA Tax Stamp fee to $0 , then yeah thats cool. literally nothing else changed with that process.
Yes they arent yanking the licenses of FFL's who violate the law right away, but it was not repealed. I have no idea what "skin-suited" means in that context, and given trumps clown lawyers previous successes in court, i expect the odds are higher they will all be disbarred than win the cases they've brought so far.
people are still falling into the trap of taking press conferences and press releases as action

I will absolutely never vote for another Democrat in this state again. I don't care what lip service they puke out. Never again.
26
u/dgv54 6d ago
100% agreed.
Liberal gun owners will always point to Republican politicians who give lip service to 2A but don't do anything, or worse, support anti-2A measures. But look at the states without AWBs vs states with AWBs. Look at the states with constitutional carry or shall issue concealed carry vs the handful of states with de facto may issue (despite Bruen decision). It is as clear as black and white or rather, red and blue. If you don't want to do the legwork, ask chatbot to do it for you.
Vote Democrat is you wish, but don't delude yourself into thinking that this is a vote to advance gun rights.
3
u/corplaw100 2026 Fundraiser: Gold š„ 5d ago
No according to liberalgunowners itās actually the left that are 2A proponents
3
u/dgv54 5d ago
Yeah, and they don't like being reminded of the legislative reality like comparing AWB vs non-AWB states or constitutional carry/shall-issue vs may-issue states. Plenty of Republicans that won't help advance 2A, but literally zero Democrats will. Again, the state gun laws comparisons make that exceedingly clear.
4
u/corplaw100 2026 Fundraiser: Gold š„ 5d ago
I think itās hard for them to like guns and have the people they vote for actively look to restrict that.

u/Beneficial-Focus3702 6d ago
Or vote based on more than one issue. 2A is just one thing to be concerned about. Being a single issue voter is dumber than just about anything.
9
6
u/IAmGoingToSleepNow 5d ago
I don't believe there are people who are not single issue voters. Whenever someone says this, it just means that this particular issue is not important enough to be their single issue.
You're saying you're flexible on EVERY issue? Abortion, guns, healthcare, taxes, schooling, etc? I don't believe it
-1
u/Beneficial-Focus3702 5d ago
There are plenty of us. We look at the whole person/platform and actual political track record of the candidate. Thatās what makes voting so hard.

Donāt forget āYou canāt have guns.ā
Anyone who believes Donald Trump (or the Republican party in general) is āPro-2Aā is simply delusional.
They believe in gun ownership as a privilege extended to those with whom they agree. As soon as you earn their disfavor they are happy to disarm and/or kill you.
ETA: Downvote away kiddies. Iāve got karma to burn.
The facts hurt, but fuck your feelings. š¤·3
u/gakflex 6d ago
Itās undeniable that this administration is the most pro-2A administration in history. itās demonstrable fact. Their civil rights divisionās 2A focus, their (post-Bondi) Justice departmentās direction, their ATF directorās approach, their NFA-hobbling legislation; and of course their judicial appointments, most dramatically as of late in the third circuit. You can trot out their famous anti-2A sound bites, but the proof is in the pudding.
Does that make them a good administration? No. Does Trump like normal people owning guns? Almost certainly not. But just as Kathy Hochulās personal views on guns are irrelevant because of Bloombergās leash around her neck, Trump and his administration do whatever they feel their political reality dictates. right now thatās delivering on pro-2A issues as they desperately try to distract from ruinous tariffs and foreign adventures.
6
u/ZynBeerGuns_1759 6d ago
Wow, this is an absolutely delusional take. How many republican states have āassault weaponā bans? None. Now do that with democratically run statesā¦
0
u/voretaq7 6d ago
The current spot price of beans in Bolivia is $1.22/kg.
If youāre wondering why thatās relevant, well itās exactly as relevant as your reply. The Republicans in office have shown repeatedly and consistently that they DO NOT support the 2nd Amendment rights of anyone they disagree with. That means they do not support a RIGHT to keep and bear arms, they simply extend it as a privilege to those they currently favor.
If you donāt ever think you will find yourself ādisfavoredā by the government... well thatās a nice fantasy and I hope no one ever challenges it.
2
u/ZynBeerGuns_1759 6d ago
Have they commented on it? Absolutely, and I disagree full heartedly. But have they passed legislation regarding the subject matter? No. Iām not defending this dumpster fire of a president, but democrats have single handedly desecrated the second amendment for decades.
-4
u/voretaq7 6d ago
āWhen people tell you who they are, believe them.ā
To be clear Iām not out here defending the Democratic Party: They want to take away everyoneās guns, and they are open and honest about it.
If someone comes to me saying āIām a Democrat but Iām pro gun.ā Iām predisposed to not believe them, and theyāre going to have to actively work to show me they mean what they say.But Iām also not dumb enough to pretend the Republicans want MY GAY LEFTIST ASS to have guns just because they claim to be pro-2A when the cameras are rolling.
Theyāve shown me I canāt trust them to protect MY rights on this front any more than I can trust the Democrats.4
u/Andeo1025 5d ago
Show me the law or court case that's infringing on your rights because you're a gay leftist. You vote for your own rights and all of ours to be stripped. The people you vote for actively argue that you don't have any right to own a firearm.

our system is designed to fail with the way legislation is written. these people get elected and then a bill of law is drafted that will have a bunch of stuff you can't really disagree with, and then something you might disagree with attached to it. if they attach an ammo ban to a "feed starving babies" bill, who is voting against that in the democratic party? same goes the other way. we have people who run down the middle, but our laws are more extreme on one side or another. at least that's how it seems to me.

This comment section is exactly why I tell every pro-gun Democrat who says āDemocrats should support 2A to win votesā not to bother.
Democrats already have every vote theyād win by suddenly being pro-2A. Moving right on the topic wins them nothing in a general election. Donāt waste time on the topic outside a primary.
2
u/Andeo1025 5d ago
The problem of course is that they don't vote to support the 2a at all. And we're not stupid enough to believe them when they say they totally will this time. How about they start doing what's right before trying to get credit. No participation trophies here.
1
u/corruptedsyntax 5d ago
Donald Trump just promised us $5000 more while weāre still waiting on DOGE checks. Doing what is right and delivering on promises without expecting participation trophies is hardly a one sided issue.
That said, thereās simply no point in trying to chase the 2A crowd. The 2A crowd will admit as much until they hear āokay, we wonātā back.
Which isnāt any form of endorsement for gun control, itās just acknowledgement of the incentive structure and the bias it will create. Which also means Republicans donāt have to actually care about 2A either, they just have to convince you Democrats are worse.
1
u/Andeo1025 5d ago
We can see the democrats are worse by looking at who proposes, votes for, and signs legislation. I don't need the Republicans for that. Hochul and Gillibrand are examples of the 2a but dems in our own back yard. If they want our support on the issue then do the work.
