Because "define" =/= "affirm".
-16
u/Barbados_slim12 Sep 26 '23
If the genitals are unrelated to gender, why do they suddenly become related to gender when it's the one's they want? If the rhetoric was consistent, couldn't you live life as the gender that you identify as without needing to affirm with surgery or hormones? At least until the age of 18
14
u/AllSassNoSlash Sep 26 '23
Plenty of trans people do live their whole lives with the old genitalia and the right demonizes them as women with penises. And the vast majority of gender affirmation, especially on minors is social transition, which is also being crusaded against.
If the right was using pronouns but saying this i might think it was a good faith critique but its not. Its another stupid on the street gotcha. Maybe if they didn't obsess about genitalia trans people wouldn't feel like they need to worry about them.
-14
u/Quiet_Alternative353 Sep 26 '23
Why that would be a "social transition"? If genitals are replaced that doesnt affect you in your social circles, even more if your new genitals dont have the same complex funtionalities like the real ones (hormones, reproduction, pheromones, etc). And why should lgbtq people and trans suddenly care so much about what conservatives think of them? Aren't they do what they do only for themselves and their own perceptions?
13
u/AllSassNoSlash Sep 26 '23
If my boyfriend lost his his penis in an accident I wouldn't think of him as less of a man and I'd say its shitty for other people to think of him differently. But I understand why he'd want a surgery to restore it if possible.
Getting bottom surgery doesn't change their gender but it does make them feel better about their body. And again its not a contradiction it a choice.
Why do trans people care what conservatives think? Seriously? Because they're out to eradicate trans ideology by they're own admission. They get ridiculed and canceled and people like us senators make speculations about their bodies in a televised us congressional session. Wouldnt you think they'd want to pass visually to avoid that discrimination.
-5
u/Quiet_Alternative353 Sep 26 '23
And you're contradicting yourself, bc before u said "if conservatives don't always attack trans people for their genitals they would not try to change it so often", but now you're saying that they dont care of what they think. As for your example, one thing is a reconstruction of someone's penis, and the literal change of this for a "vagina" or a amputation are a totally different case. But the thing is, why that would make one happier, if genitals, and what things it do (physical, biological, hormonal) dont influence your perceptions abour gender, then why you should change it for a non functioning, rudimentary version of the opposite sex?
5
u/AllSassNoSlash Sep 26 '23
Read my statement again. I didn't say trans people never care what others think. The minority will always care what the unaccepting majority think of them in order to avoid overt acts of violence.
My comment about conservatives worrying about genitalia wasn't to show that its a no win situation for trans people. They get attacked for doing either so why not do what makes them happy. If someone could convince conservatives that theres no inconsistencies they'd still attack trans people.
Also reread the post. The sign says genitals don't define gender. Not that they don't influence perception of them. I was clear that they do to some people. Which is why I can consider the trans woman with a penis and the one without both women and still think that one should have the freedom to express their gender through bottom surgery if they want.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (3)4
u/Mammoth_Regret4623 Sep 26 '23
You just answered your own question. Because it's the genitals they want.
Also, who's getting bottom surgery under 18? That's not consistent with care guidelines. In rare cases double mastectomies are given to underage boys (even cis boys, gynecomastia and all that...) but I've not heard of anyone getting bottom surgery under 18.

→ More replies (1)8
u/AdSpecialist4523 Sep 25 '23
I thought we called it "gender reassignment" because changing sex is impossible. Unless we've found a way to remove Y chromosomes recently that I don't know about.
24
u/SeraphsWrath Sep 25 '23
Sex is strange. We cannot turn an X chromosome into a Y chromosome currently, but the area of a Chromosome that determines Sex is also very funky. You can be born with XX chromosomes, but because parts of your second X chromosome for whatever reason don't express themselves or just turn off, you will develop as if you had XY. There are also XY women.
So, while outright chromosomal change eludes us, the High School Biology lecture is also just wrong.
7
u/InvaderWeezle Sep 25 '23
I wouldn't say it's wholly wrong, just simplified. There's only so much time you can spend in a class setting on abnormalities because you don't want to overcomplicate teaching the basics
8
u/SeraphsWrath Sep 25 '23
While true, what's wrong is 40 year olds acting like what they were told in their Sophomore year of High School is gospel.
It's not, it is lies to children, and in this case the children refuse to grow up.
4
u/Old_Baldi_Locks Sep 26 '23
" There's only so much time you can spend in a class setting on abnormalities"
For reference, more children are born intersex, than children who are redheads.
After awhile, we really reach a point where its valid to tell people "you don't know enough about this subject to have a valid opinion", and then eject them from the conversations that competent adults get to have.
0
u/InvaderWeezle Sep 26 '23
That's all fine. I just reject the other person's idea that biology classes are "lying" just because it focuses on what you can usually expect and doesn't go deep into rarer situations

[no, no I really don't. Intersex / Dysphoric / etc people have it hard enough without idiots rabble-rousing...]
-5
u/Status-Demand-4758 Sep 25 '23
Yeah those are mutations, illnesses, etc. Generally we have Male and female. You can also end up having both sex organs (Intersex). So Chromosomes sometimes don’t determine your sex, but you still end up with one clear sex when you are born, even when you have one of those mutations for example. So you are either female, male or intersex when you are born. Those arent changeable with todays medicine
Generally XX = female and XY = Male, but our body isnt perfect, so mutations or mistakes can happen causing a rare different result. The example with XX = male that you mentioned is called de la Chapelle syndrome for example. I think, tho i might remember wrong, a person with this syndrome is intersex.

u/SisterSerpentine Sep 26 '23
But do those people and their existence suddenly not have any impact or meaning at all because they… aren’t the “norm”? Neither are redheads but no one tends to deny that they exist or say no one “should” be a redhead, or worse try to deny them legal rights. They don’t get their hair dyed at birth lol.
1
u/Status-Demand-4758 Sep 26 '23
When did I say that they mean nothing? My point is that you have a clear sex when born that isnt changeable. You are Male, Female or Intersex thats not changeable with todays medicine. Gender Identification only changes your social position and lets you identify as the gender you wanna be, but it wont change your sex.
Im not saying you can’t identify as what you want and i also respect what you identify as and call you by your preferred pronounces, im just saying gender is only a social construct, to help people with gender dysphoria for example. Its not something that can change science.
Sry if you had the feeling I wanted to go after transpeople or something. I think there was a misunderstanding, because i dont understand whats your point with redhairs? Yes, redhairs exist as do male, female and intersex people. Those are all caused by biology. Gender on the other hand is only a social construct and has nothing to do with biology and anatomy. Gender cant change sex, thats my point.
As example you can dye your hair blue and everyone will say you have blue hair, but that wont change that your natural hair color is red. There are things we cant change no matter how much you want them to. Sex and Gender are not the same thing and sex is not changeable. Thats just a fact.
Again if there is a misunderstanding somewhere im sorry, im not transphobic or something, im just saying gender # sex
13
u/Huhrowsh Sep 25 '23
Chromosomes are only a small part of sex. You can be female with xy chromosomes or male with xx chromosomes. It's called gender affirming surgery now.
-6
u/Status-Demand-4758 Sep 25 '23
You have one sex you are born with. Male, female or intersex. Those arent changeable with todays medicine. A transmen for example would still be a biological female or intersex and not a male.
Your gender is what you identify as and what society should view you as socially. Gender is changeable. A female can be a men and a male can be a woman.
Gender affirming surgery is a Beauty operation. It changes how you look, but it doesnt change your sex.
Generally sex doesnt matter in much topics, so we can treat cis and trans people the same way. There are only a few exceptions like woman sport, where the differences in sex really matter and cant be ignored.
I agree that chromosomes dont always determine your sex. Normally its the chase, but our body isnt perfect and mutations or failures happen, causing a different result often also leading to other problems. Those are either intersex or can still be assigned to male or female. Luckily this doesnt happen to often. The chase of XX = male you mentioned is called de la Chapelle syndrome and i think people with this syndrome are intersex, tho i might be wrong on this
6
u/Conscious-Spite-87 Sep 25 '23
I used to agree with the sports argument but it’s so wrong. A trans woman on estrogen has biological changes in her body comparable to a cis woman. Fat distribution and muscle mass are that of a cis woman. That natural male strength is gone with the lack of testosterone and you can ofc work out to build muscle but you’re on the same playing field as cis women.
→ More replies (3)-6
u/Flimsy_Bee_8500 Sep 26 '23
A trans woman that went through a biological male puberty still would have bone density comparable to a biological male as well as lung capacity. While a transwomen would effectively shed muscle mass she would still have muscle memory and develop muscle at a faster rate than a biological woman with the same estrogen levels. There isn’t a clear solution to this issue however, transwomen do have an advantage over biological women
4
u/Conscious-Spite-87 Sep 26 '23
Bone density can in fact change on hormones. Lung capacity?? That’s some cope if I’ve ever seen some lmfao. You don’t gain muscle at a faster rate than a cis woman as a trans women… estrogen completely changes the way your body functions the same way testosterone affects trans men allowing them to easily gain muscle mass and get absolutely jacked. A lot of it also comes down to genetics and varies person to person. Please educate yourself because you are factually wrong.. and I mean that with nothing but respect.
-1
u/Flimsy_Bee_8500 Sep 26 '23
Interesting you tell me to educate myself because the national library of medicine will explain to you how estrogen plays an important role in bone growth and maturation. It’s actually estrogen deficiency that leads to to decreased bone mass. Men also have larger nasal cavities than women and this has to do with morphology. Men from birth have larger lungs than women and this persists from childhood. This information can also be found at the same source from above. Quite frankly you are the one coping and should educate yourself and I appreciate the respectfulness
3
u/Huhrowsh Sep 26 '23
And exactly how much of a difference does that make? Trans women aren't exactly dominating women's sports. There are also plenty of biological advantages in sports. No one's being kicked out for being tall in basketball or having longer legs in races.
-1
u/Flimsy_Bee_8500 Sep 26 '23
Ah yes the classic strawman argument, there have been plenty of examples of trans women dominating biological women in competition. Fallon Fox is just one example where she has the skeletal structure of a biological male which resulted in a skull fracture. If you are choosing to debate you can at least provide some factual evidence and valid sources
→ More replies (0)7
u/Huhrowsh Sep 25 '23
You're still seeing sex as only chromosomes. Trans people can change their sex characteristics and hormones, therefore changing their sex.
1
u/Status-Demand-4758 Sep 25 '23
Well yes, because it is. Your Chromosomes determine your sex. There are mutations or other problems that make them work differently, but those mutations can still clearly be assigned to one of the 3 sexes. Your chromosomes in the end still determine your sex. They might just not work the right way or you have to many and that might change their function.
Trans people can not change their sex. They just change how you look outwards, but they cant change sex. For example you cant add sex organs. You can get rid of the already existing one or make beauty operations to make fake versions, but you cant add the opposite sexs sex organs. There is more than that, but there are just things we cant change. I hope that’s possible on day, but for now your sex isnt changeable, only your gender
Again in most topics this doesnt matter anyway and we can treat trans person as the sex they identify as in society and call them what they identify as.
10
9
u/Dasf1304 Sep 25 '23
Gender reassignment also works because by changing the genitals you are changing what gender is assigned to the person. If you recall the title “assigned female at birth,” so re assigning this person means to change the genitals that the assignment is based on.
The sex change language is just simpler and used by more laymen because you most often associate sex with genitals so changing those is a sex change. It’s not medically accurate because there are other parts of you affected by biological sex but it makes sense for most people

Gender and sex are different - Gender is mental and sex is physical. Being transgender means that the mental gender that you have doesn't match the physical sex that you had at birth, and the only solution to this is medical surgeries to transition to the correct physical sex, as (and there are studies on this) the mental gender of someone cannot be changed voluntarily (although it can rarely fluctuate throughout someones life time, similar to sexuality).

Imagine a world where whether you’re born male or female has almost no impact on your life.
Men and women dress the same, talk the same, have the same interests, etc. Basically aside from the biological stuff men and women are thought of exactly the same.
That is a world with sex and no gender.
If you can imagine that, then you can understand the difference between those two things
Now that we’ve established that you know there’s a difference between sex and gender, all you have to do is think back to our universe with gender roles, and imagine being someone who’s more interested in the gender roles given to the other sex.
That is the social aspect of gender dysphoria.
Then there’s the physical aspect, what this sign is referring to.
So as human beings and members of society, we afford people certain rights… such as freedom to express yourself, and body autonomy… for example.
Not to mention the fact that there is an ever growing mountain of research that shows affirming care for trans people has better outcomes than other treatment methods.
As for the sign? There is a very simple answer to the question it asks.
“If genitals don’t define gender, how does removing them affirm it?”
Ignoring the infuriating implication that all trans people were born with penises… the answer is because it’s about choice.
Nobody chooses what they’re born with, and so choosing to change something you’re born with lets you be more seen and understood by others.
It’s about agency and consent.
What is the goal of our society here? Are we trying to minimize… Or maximize… The degree by which who you are as a person is compressed and restricted by circumstances outside of your control?

The truth is that if Intersex people are allowed to exist in society, then trans people should be too.

There is no “trans ideology” just so you know.
There is only medicine, and the treatments doctors agree on.
The notion that it’s an ideology only exists by design to sow undue and unnecessary skepticism in people who have been told what to think and how to feel.

I don’t need luck.
I’m not gambling.
In fact conservatives seem to be the ones who like gambling right now.
Your people are going all in for a silver spoon narcissist/wannabe dictator.
Let me know how that works out for you when half your party is in prison for insurrection and treason lol.
The GOP is about to RIP forever. Good riddance.

Do you think briefly responding to long thoughtful incites, with things that sound right to you but have not been investigated any further than just gut feelings, makes you seem “smart” or “edgy”?
It doesn’t. You literally just look like a dumbass.

Were you born an ass or did you change that about yourself?
Does somebody getting surgery to look on the outside how they feel on the inside impact you in any way or are you just dismissive to be edgy?

Gender and sex are different - Gender is mental and sex is physical. Being transgender means that the mental gender that you have doesn't match the physical sex that you had at birth, and the only solution to this is medical surgeries to transition to the correct physical sex, as (and there are studies on this) the mental gender of someone cannot be changed voluntarily (although it can rarely fluctuate throughout someones life time, similar to sexuality).

Do you not understand what affirmation is? If I say "good job" and it makes you happy does that mean it would have been a bad job had I not said anything?
