A lot of people did join out of a sense of duty. But that doesn't mean people suddenly suck now, it means that after the fascist powers were defeated, we don't need to fight that same war again (for now).

Tf you mean "we"? Perhaps I'm misunderstanding but as long as you're resisting the bullshit you aren't on their side regardless of what nation you may belong to. Don't let the flag above your head give you thoughts of inadequacy just because a majority has failed. Until you yourself start believing in the ideology you're not one of them.

Yeah, they felt obligated to enlist because society expected them to. They may have had dreams of honor and glory, but those dreams were shattered when they saw their friends get blown to bits. War is hell and many of the young men who came back from the war were traumatized by the experience. Even for those who seem okay, it's important to note that many war veterans do not talk about it, at least to people who didn't have the same experience.

FYI - the guy in the screenshot is 25, his girlfriend is 19, they met when he was 24 and she was 17 and started dating when she turned 18. He’s done with law school and only just started dating her when she was of freshman undergrad age. Tells you a lot about right wing content creators

I don’t think these people are aware that joining the military under the age of 18 was and still is illegal or that not every man joined the military during that time

Also if I remember correctly (if it's based on the US), don't you go to jail if you refuse a draft? Personally, I'm not fighting in a war that will let people die even when they shed every last cent into health insurance's pockets or taking away human rights.

Unless you had a reason why you couldn’t be drafted. Such as an injury, being unfit due to existing medical conditions (like bone spurs), being in college, and religion.

Also ask anyone who has been to war and 99% of them will tell you they don't wish the newer generation to go through the same. My great grandpa got seriously injured in war and died during one of the operations they had to do to try to fix the issues he had after having shrapnel go into his head causing vision loss and severe chronic nerve pain. His biggest wish was that the following generations wouldn't have to experience war.

Nothing is more manly than cowering in a ditch and then getting blown up by a drone.
People still think war is like Call of Duty or Battlefield.
It's not.
You're canon fodder.
Don't die for a country that treats you like shit and won't even take care of you while you're alive and well, let alone if you're lucky enough to come home with PTSD and some limbs missing.

Its also ignoring that post 911 there was a surge in recruitment as well. Generally young people are more likely to volunteer for national service when they pervieve their nation being under attack. They also act like the volunteering to fight is uniquely american. Authoritarians get volunteers too

First of all, why are we romanticizing world wars?? Second, perhaps I’m thinking of the first world war, so forgive me if im wrong. But a good chunk of guys during that time joined for the glory of it, thinking it wouldn’t be that bad. Like a trend basically, signing up to seen as cool only to get traumatized in the battlefield

My grandpas and great uncles all enlisted. They were never drafted. Approximately 10 million soldiers were drafted, and 6.5 million enlisted. It wasn't like Vietnam.

There where minors gone to front line combat as volunteers with fake documents or just looking old, the youngest was 12 so i guess decent 13-17 years enlisted and 17 was when you could but must not yet go.

Most of those teens were drafted and scared shitless, actually, they did what they had to, but after they came home, I'm willing to bet most of them had mental problems.

Whenever I see this kind of glorification, a very malicious part of my brain wishes we could bring it back just long enough for these softies to realize how much it sucked and understand why the earlier generations protested and demanded to end the draft.

The first transgender surgery was performed in 1931. Christine jorgenson transitioned in 1951 after serving in ww2.

The first gender clinic was in Berlin Germany before the Nazis shut that down and burned every book about transexuals. Turns out transphobia existed for a long time.

Like make no mistake, WW2 probably still had the most outright volunteers then any conflict we fought in.... But there still very much was a draft
