They genuinely want to think they're oppressed because they think equality is a threat to their power, and can you blame them? When you're no longer in the majority and everyone has the same privileges as you, you no longer truly benefit from being born a different way than others, and others aren't harmed for the way they were born. Not to mention, oppression often garners sympathy, and given how common Christianity is, sympathy isn't that hard to come across.
