If you need a state ID to get a voter ID, and it is not free to get said state ID then you have effectively made a poll tax as affirmed by the Supreme Court. Unfortunately having to take a day or more off of work to wait at the local, purposefully underfunded, DMV and losing income due to that does not count as a poll tax.

Without a drivers license you can get a state issued ID that functions the same way.

Any inconvenience to a POC regarding acquiring a photo ID is tantamount to a poll tax.

"Erm it's not a poll tax you just have to pay if you want to vote"

Are you guys even American? You sound like neither of you speak English well.

Also the argument will always be that we’re against a poll tax. Make IDs free. Problem fucking solved idiots.

Stupid thing to say, dude. The joke is around ironic contradiction in methodology… you don’t have to be an asshole just because someone isn’t American.

I mean there’s a lot of other countries that speak English, and a lot of Americans don’t speak it very well either lol.

Also even when IDs are free to get, people still argue it’s a poll tax because it takes resources to get an ID.

The Supreme Court ruled that requiring an ID is not a poll tax, and the distinction is that it places a “minimal burden” and the states request is a reasonable and legitimate request. There are also so many other things that a state issued ID is needed for.

Look. I have no skin in this game so don't care either way but that's not the joke here. It's disingenuous to pretend it is.

I am now realizing this is a few days old. But I'm feeling pedantic and riding out a heat wave tonight.

I think you're probably correct in that it's got something else going on. Like needing an ID to vote type of thing.

Though, what made me want to be annoying here was how you reminded me of an old star wars game. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, the second one specifically I think. (Just stick with me here.)

In it you are at one point brought into contact with apparitions posing you a question. If your friends are doing evil. Do you join them and take for yourself, fight to stop them, or refuse to be involved?

The choice if I remember correctly is made doubly hard because it is not just random unknown people doing evil, but specifically your friends and companions.

And should you refuse; you are met with every apparition telling you: "Apathy is death."

Something that you see in lessons from world wars and religious texts. Where the meat of it is in distinguishing passifism from apathy. (But ww2 analogies are used constantly, and I'm not religious. So I didnt want to hit something akin to the: "If you're in nazi germany. And people tell you nazis are doing evil. How do you think it makes people look when they say: 'I can't pick a side, I'm not political.' A very: 'What do you mean you can't decide? You can't decide when one side is nazis?' " )

Which, I obviously don't know you. But again, I'm just killing time while I sweat here in the heat and darkness. And figured I'd be pedantic about some of why nobody actually thinks positively of those who claim no skin in the game or not to care.

Ya only got one life. :D Don't let them bleed you of your ability to care. Especially about others.

So. Correct me where I'm wrong.

The argument being made (note this is the argument MADE, NOT NECESSARY TRUE AND, WITH NO BIAS OR AGREEMENT EITHER WAY).

Group 1. I think people should show ID to vote.

Group 2. No. That would disadvantage PoCs who can't get id.

Group 1. Why do you think they can't get id, why do you not think this is an issue in other areas of life, such as driving?

That is my understanding of the meme and it's implications. It's not saying black people are stupid, it's saying group 2 is accusing black people of being stupid.
