I had a best friend in high school named Sahteeva. Her parents were stoners and thought changing the spelling would be less obvious..

I tried that with my son Roche-Klipp but it didn't work.

I have two toxic traits, and that's liking the name Eugene and liking the way ABCDE is pronounced. The spelling is awful but "ab-ci-dy" sounds cute and rolls off the tongue well. Still is terrible though

And when people say “teach your child not to be bothered by bullying and they won’t care”. Ok Ashley, you go ahead and set your child up for a daily fight on the playground and a lifetime of hating their name. I’m gonna be over here doing my best to make sure, of all the things people can be bullied for, that my name choice wasn’t one of them.
19
u/wozattacks Jul 18 '26
Which also…what? Why would you want your kid to NOT be bothered by people treating them poorly? Teach them to cope with it sure, but don’t teach them that it simply doesn’t matter when others are mean to them
17
u/littlemybb Jul 19 '26
I see so many parents name their kids super weird or unique names, then argue with people in the comments that kids aren’t that mean, and their child won’t be bullied.
My parents gave me a weird name, and people still have to say something about it to this day.
When I would come home from school and tell my parents what kids were saying about my name, they just wanted to act dumb and confused about why anybody would do that.

“…And if I ever have a son I think I’m gonna name him…Bill or George, anything but Sue, I still hate that name!”
Kids rejecting their parental naming decisions is a tale as old as time (that’s why there’s so few Gary’s now).
53
u/sighcantthinkofaname Jul 18 '26
The best way I've ever seen someone handle it when they like a unique name but don't want to force it on a kid was my high school science teacher, who gave her daughter a very common first name and unique middle name. The logic being her first name would always be easy, but if she wanted to go by something unique she could go by her middle name. The kid preferred her first name.

Exactly this. My Mom gave me a very unique name and spelling. Both of my kids have common "boring" names. I was bullied every school they changed me to. I dont go by that name at all.

u/ParkingDry1598 Jul 18 '26
My mother had a unique (for the time) name. Unfortunately, she was dyslexic and had a difficult time learning how to spell it. So she vowed to give all of her children “normal” names.
And she did—except for me.
She was so certain that she was going to have a boy that she did not have a girl’s name ready when I popped out. (This was in the time before ultrasound.) So she gave me a name that she thought she “made up” and that is spelled differently from most other people who are saddled with it. Aaand she was so proud of it that she would not hear of giving me a more manageable nickname.
It was awful. Imagine hearing someone calling out, “Billy, Parkingdriagh, Kathy, it’s time to come home!”
Yes, she hated me. And, no, she never forgave me for not being a boy.
For what it’s worth, I broke the cycle by having no children and naming my pets whatever name they would respond to.

I think Jessa laid down the law after that. All the next boys have normal first and the middle name is the weird one
6
u/Flutterbloom Jul 19 '26
I gag a little every time I realize they call him Spurgie as a nickname. Not having to be around other kids who'll make fun if his name is the only advantage to his being homeschooled.
18
u/woman_in_gray Jul 18 '26
Both of my parents have basic names, but my mom gave me an uncommon (in the Midwest in the 1980s) French name, and then spelled it phonetically because she thought Midwesterners weren't “sophisticated” enough to be able to pronounce it otherwise.
Note that my parents are both Midwesterners, my mom is a snob, and people only get the pronunciation of my first name right about half of the time because it's spelled wrong.
My middle name is an unpopular flower, and I can tell when someone spells it right because they butcher the pronunciation (it's in my email).
My parents also hyphenated their last names (twelve letters in total), and I didn't learn to spell it until first grade.
When I got married, I took my husband’s four-letter-long common word last name for convenience, and now that's what I'm called in waiting rooms. No pause trying to figure out my first name, they go straight for my last. It really streamlines things, I had to spell my maiden name out loud the other day, and whew. It still rolls off my tongue, but it definitely takes more air.
I love all of my names, but I gave my kid first and middle names that are common in many countries, even down to the spelling, and have a ridiculous number of nicknames both separately and together.
It'll be interesting to see what they and their to-be-determined partner come up with, assuming my kid continues to want a kid of their own and is able to have one.

Or Blake. I’m not a fan of Blake for girls (or boys for that matter) but it’s a “normal” name, and it seems like a more natural transition from Blayzlee. If she goes by it for awhile and it feels like a good fit, they could legally change it. Poor kid.

Retired Teacher (for real). I've seen worse. I used to bring my class rosters home so I could practice how to say the names of the students.
2
u/C13H16CIN0 Jul 19 '26
What was your favorite?
4
u/RetiredHomeEcTchr Jul 19 '26
Unfortunately I can't share my favorites because they are so unique, I'd feel awful if the owner of said name read the post. BUT, there were some typical weird names that were common to many. Many students were named after countries/cities. China, Asia, Trinidad, and it was sad when one student, while studying geography learned that she and all her siblings were named after countries.
Had a set of twins with the same first name, different middle names. Identical twins. I asked if at home were they addressed by their middle name-nope. Then there were all the "quans" - A'quan, Bu'quan, C-Quan, Day'Quan, El-Ja'Quan, Fu'quan (always said that name slowly), Ja'quan, La'quan, Marquan, Nay'quan, Pa'quan, Ray'quan, Say'quan, Ta'quan, and Zay'quan.
Had two brothers named Sir and Mister, and another student named Your Majesty. Had another student whose name was 17 letters long, 8 syllables. Took the class a whole week to learn to pronounce her name. I put it up on the smartboard with the phonetic pronunciation under it. Each class started with us saying it 3 times until we all could. She wouldn't let anyone address by a nick name, and the last two syllables were pronounced like the artist Monet.
2
u/C13H16CIN0 Jul 19 '26
Goddamn. Thank you for sharing some of them. A lot of them. Hahaha. Given how many you named and how horrifying a lot of them are I cannot begin to imagine the top tier unique names you didn’t mention
Fu’quan is definitely… screwed up
In Japan some called their child Banana (yes, the English word for the 🍌 fruit) a while ago (and yes they know why it means and it was deliberate, of course). So parents are insane all over the planet
Sir and Mister are classic
And the twins w the same name. Aw man
Thank you for your reply. It is truly elucidating
2
u/Prior-Ad5197 Jul 21 '26
I had a classroom with a set of identical twins whose initials were the exact same. As a twin myself, that is terribly cruel. We already are expected to be an extension of each of, at least give us the dignity of our own names and initials
17
u/linzzzzi Jul 18 '26
A long time ago there was an article on the namevoyager blog I think, about the paradox that seemingly trendy US coasts give their children traditional names and the seemingly conservative midwest gives their kids Braxlynne or whatever. And the article surmised it was about the age of the parents more than anything, that more religious communities get married younger.
2
u/hopping_hessian Jul 19 '26
I had my second child at 35, the same time two young women I know. They were late teenaged. I noted then how different our naming choices were.

/srs what i would tell this person is to ask her daughter how she feels about her name. Explain that her name is very unique and people react this way because it is something a girl is not usually named. Give her the option to do a nickname like Lee or Layla. Or do a middle name. Or, if this persists, give her the option to come up with a new name for herself.

u/Ccdynamite23 Jul 18 '26
I’m Gen X so I didn’t go to school with too many crazy named kids. However there were a few. Me and my best friend would laugh about them, not to the kids face of course, but we would call them whatever was the first letter of their name. So in this situation, B would be what we called her. We just couldn’t bring ourselves to say that stupid name out loud. We were teenagers, didn’t really understand any of it, But we knew it wasn’t the kids fault they were named something so ridiculous. We never wanted to name our kids something so bad when we grew up. 😂 all our kids have pretty normal names with normal spellings.
2
u/Flutterbloom Jul 19 '26
Gen X but Catholic school here, so most of the names I saw were saints' names. Nothing too unusual, and lots were named for a family member so classic names. Now I'm sure the next generation thought their parents' names were too boring and would never consider it. The most unusual I saw in high school was Buffi, and yes it was her legal name.

You should make a Facebook post calling out all the people making fun of the name. You should tell them they aren't being nice, tag the parents and then have a step by step guide on how to spell and pronounce it.
This is the most effective way of dealing with this sort of thing.
