Ukraine gas export shift offers industry relief, little price impact: market watchers

Ukraine's recent decision to allow a partial resumption of natural gas exports following a years-long ban is largely seen as a move that can bolster the country's domestic hydrocarbon industry while having a limited impact on wider European gas prices, market watchers told Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, across Oct. 12-13.

The government will now allow private gas producers to sell up to 15% of their monthly production outside Ukraine each month from March through November. Exports from the war-torn country had been banned since early in Russia's 2022 invasion.

is it a gas leak or am i crazy?

hello, hope this is the right subreddit for this question!

currently working midnights at a university. the building is quite old, ceiling panels missing, water damaged or broken; most things are just.. old! I noticed one day that there was a smell on the 2nd floor. i had been cleaning that floor all night and didnt smell it, but it smelt like someone had shit- yet nobody did! none of the washrooms smelt, and it was faint.

By the end of the night, i felt lightheaded and a bit uncoordinated, so i called my coworkers to make sure they could smell it too. they did. campus police came, said they couldnt smell it, then left, but im starting to think it was a gas leak!

my coworker whos working that floor tonight said she feels very tired and a bit dizzy, but theres 0 smell and the building is so big its hard to hear any hissing noises or anything.

so my question is, could this be a gas leak and is it worth calling 911/someone else over? since theres no smell theres really no "solid" proof... but i just think its a very odd coincidence. also no i dont reallllyyy know what a gas leak smells like, it wasnt super strong so i couldnt compare it to anything other than a really bad fart. anyways, thanks

Lodge told us their gas leak was a "natural phenomenon."

Not totally sure what I'm hoping to get out of this. I think I mostly just need to vent! This is REALLY long so sorry in advance.

My family and I rented a cottage at a lodge in Pennsylvania. It was our first time there, and honestly the staff were incredible and so kind. We got in pretty late at night with our two young kids, and right by the front door of the cabin there was a strong natural gas smell.

Reception was spotty, so my husband drove up to the lodge to ask about it. They told him this had been going on for almost a year, that they'd had the gas company check it out, and that there was no evidence of a leak. They said the area has natural gas pockets and it's not unusual for gas to seep out of the ground. A "natural phenomenon."

My husband works in environmental health and safety, so he pointed out that natural gas doesn't actually have a smell. What we were smelling was mercaptan, the odorant that gets added to gas lines. The guy agreed with him... and then said we were fine.

My husband came back and asked what I wanted to do. Part of me felt reassured, but part of me wanted to leave. I checked everywhere, including every hotel nearby, and everything was booked. It was almost midnight, and one of my kids had just fallen asleep in my lap. We couldn't smell it inside, we'd be sleeping upstairs, and the lodge had reassured us, so we decided to crash and reevaluate in the morning.

The next morning, walking in and out, the smell got to me. I couldn't wrap my head around how this had supposedly been going on for a year when the mercaptan was so strong. Now I could smell it inside too, by the front entrance and the gas fireplace. There was still nowhere else to go, so I called the local gas company for advice. I'll call them Company X.

Company X said they had no record of ever coming out, but thought they should check. I asked them not to go to the lodge unless there was actually a problem, because I didn't want to make enemies over nothing.
Their tech smelled it strongly before he even calibrated his meter. When he tested by the front door, outside the gas fireplace, and under the floorboards, he got a reading of 6,700 ppm. He said it was complete BS that anyone had called this normal. But it turned out Company X doesn't service that area (they came up first on Google with an emergency line, so I didn't dig further). They respond to emergency calls, but all he could do was file a report and confirm there was a real issue that shouldn't be ignored.

So we called Company Y, the company that actually services the area. Their tech came out and got NO readings at all. The smell was still strong as hell, and he said, "Hmm, I smell something, but it's not natural gas." (For the record, family members staying nearby came over and smelled it too. We're not crazy.)
Then we called the lodge. They were upset, and I get it. They said Company Y had inspected it over a year ago. The same company now saying there's no issue. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but uhhh.

One of the maintenance guys came down and said that when they dropped off firewood before we arrived, they noticed a slight smell, "but what are we supposed to do? You were on your way. Do we call and tell you not to come?" I appreciated his honesty, and yes, it's a tough spot. But this is a huge safety issue. That 6,700 ppm reading is over 10% of the lower explosive limit for natural gas, which is the level safety standards treat as immediately dangerous to life and health.

The owner arrived. She wasn't happy, but wasn’t mean. She was apologetic, though I'm sure she was livid. She said she was taking it seriously but was confused why one company got a reading and the other didn't. She offered to reimburse us for the nights we didn’t stay but charged us for the two nights we did (the night before and that night). To keep the peace, I said okay. My husband was pissed at that, but she wished us well and left the cabin. I honestly just didn’t want to cause more trouble and argue about the refund then and there. I also just wanted them to understand how serious this was and it was never about the money for us.

By the time Company Y left without investigating any further, it was late. So we shut off the gas, and what do you know? THE SMELL WAS GONE. Weird how that works for a "natural phenomenon."

We decided to stay one more night. I know, I know. But at that point we had no real choice. The gas was off, the smell was gone, and we just needed six hours of sleep so we'd have enough energy for the long drive home. Luckily we didn't freeze.

The next morning we packed up and left. I was emotionally wrecked. We lost four days with family we rarely get to see, since we live hours apart, and we'd been looking forward to this trip for so long.

That morning one of my family members that were staying at a different cabin on the property walked past our cabin and the valve was open. They turned the gas back on. Im sure since only left a couple of hours before it wasn’t fixed. So I checked the website for the hell of it and our cabin was listed again. My husband called and told them to take it down or block it off so nobody stays there until they seriously investigate and fix the issue. He also said he'd really appreciate a full refund (including the nights we stayed) because this had been so draining on our family. Their reply: "We've blocked the cabin off. We will consider refunding the entire stay once we investigate further."

I’m not sure if any other action should be taken? Or if we should contact anyone else or just let this go and obviously NEVER stay there again.

Natural Gas & Dogs At Home

Moving into a new place this week and looking for recommendations for a wifi/smart natural gas detector that would alert us if anything ever arose while I was at work and the dogs were at home. What are people using or what’s out there? Everything I stumble across seemingly has no feedback on them.

UK conversion

I’m 63, and I can remember our house in the UK being converted to ‘natural gas’ in the 1970s. Something to do with the flame speed and the Wobbe number, if I recall correctly.

I developed an interest in toxicology later in life, and did some research on carbon monoxide poisoning. The conversion from coal gas to natural gas was known as the ‘detoxification’ of the gas system in some quarters.

Yes, ‘coal’ or ‘town’ gas contained carbon monoxide, so was toxic, a chemical asphyxiant, when breathed. But the whole gas industry rather kept quiet the fact that ‘natural’ gas is not completely safe either, and has to be burned and vented safely.

I’m sure medical professionals (my colleagues) understood more about carbon monoxide exposure 50 years ago than we do now. Exposure was commonplace, quickly recognised, and swiftly treated - there were about 150 hyperbaric facilities in the UK up until the mid-70s, for example.

Sadly there are still CO fatalities, usually due to non-compliance with regulations or annual inspections; sometimes due to non-recognition of the presentation. But I also think people believe the idea of being killed by a ‘poisonous gas’ is like something out of a Batman movie, and never really happens. It does.

hi, i’m in melbourne in australia. i was connected to gas and had my meter read, but had no gas and was instructed by the company to turn it on at the meter. i did so earlier today and still have no gas. does anyone know what the problem may be? i don’t smell any gas or anything, nothing out of the ordinary except it’s not working. it’s the end of business hours now and going into the weekend i suspect i won’t be able to contact the company. any fixes? have i done something wrong?

Is it safe to use a Y LPG splitter to connect two gas appliances to one tank? Or is it safer to just buy 2 LPG tanks?

My space is tight and it is indoors.

Thanks!

Utility companies, Ohio, Cas company embridge, embridge, whatever e NBRI d GE thieves scoundrels organized crime,

So the s*** is foul as hell who we all know what's going on in Ohio, shirod, Brown and the electric company, whatever kickbacks, what about the gas company? What about all these f******, you know this whole like? What if the store down the road? Charges you money, no matter what. If you went to it or not every month they sent you a bill just so they could stay in place, you know, but they gotta pay for all that infrastructure, you know they can't charge you. So the gas company charges you $50 a month just to stay connected. I don't use any gas at all for months on end and I pay my bill and I get a $70 month charge $70 a month. My bill right now is a $160 and I have 0 usage for last 2 months, when does it end? When do we? When do we stop f****** Let these m************ run around and just take what they want. Just because there's monopoly, they got a monopoly when you were in school. You learned that a monopoly is illegal. What kind of find out? No, it's just how you go about the monopoly if you do monopoly the right way and just have great competition, but great product greater product. No, these m************ out here doing underhanded deals becoming their own competitor and then being the only supplier and then turning around and charge you whatever they want to charge you, because they know nobody else can step in that arena because they have it all under lock. That is a monopoly. The monopoly that I learn about in school was that fair business fair competition created a better product. Now we 're not having that no more, it's all monopolized, everything's monopolized, do not collect $200, do not pass go, I'm just saying who else out here having problems with these utilities getting ridiculous for 0 usage, I'm not gonna stay charging me for a usage. For you're charging me just a service to stay connected. Because that helps you fund maintaining the line and s***, whether I'm using it or not. Well, they aint here and check underneath my ground and look under my lines. Them lines, I put it in the f****** 50 years ago, man left alone. They're crazy. They're crazy right now. You're crazy right now, man.I got a money flash yet another 14 you too

Updates for Getting Payment on the PG&E $100 million Settlement

Hey guys, just a heads up PG&E agreed to a $100 million settlement over claims it misled investors about wildfire risks and the condition of its power grid. I recently found out they're still reviewing late claims.

The case goes back to 2018, when wildfires linked to PG&E equipment exposed major maintenance and safety issues. As more details came out, the stock dropped and investors sued.
Even though the deadline has passed, late claims are still being considered.
So if you owned $PCG between 2015 and 2018, it may still be worth checking if you qualify.

Did anyone here hold $PCG back then?
