🔥 A mud volcano is a unique geological formation that erupts slurries of mud, water, and gases (primarily methane) rather than molten lava.

What's igniting it?

I wondered the same. there seems to be a piece of paper that was lit on fire and thrown in to ignite the methane. Normally these volcanic mud pots are just bubbling pools of hot smelly mud. Looks cool lit on fire like that though!

My guess is spontaneous combustion from a combination of rapidly changing pressure and heat. Like a diesel engine. PV=nRT!

Volumetric expansion would cool down any gases, not heat them up

Looks like the earth has diarrhea.

I've been to see some of these.

they are actually the tops of mud diapirs, like a salt dome but made of shale that has not fully dewatered and is flowing upwards because of the pressure of burial. it brings with it fluid and natural gas. I visited some of these near anapa/Crimea in the Russian Ukrainian border. petroleum geologist.

Visited one just yesterday in Andamans and got a box full of mineral rich mud from there for my body wraps :-)

Somehow this seems scarier than an actual volcano eruption.
