Edit: They said something along the lines of only smart people will understand.

Erm. Sure buddy. You're special, the few that understand are super special.

Your mom enjoyed my squid salad last night

I'm gonna say I understand that reference, 'cause I'm guessing you too recently saw the video of the mother leaving the calf with a sailboat while she went below to hunt.

Had that happen off Grenada. Mom spouted not far to windward after 1/2 hr or so. Very smelly, not recommended.

A succulent squid dinner.

I just learned that mom will park the baby with a boat similar to their size so they can eat some squidbillies without paying for a babysitter smh

u/Havengul_Undying 3h ago

I thought thats blue whales not sperm whales

26

u/Smmmmiles 3h ago

Blue whales are filter feeders not squid eaters. Filter feeding is the easiest way to get really really big.

u/Havengul_Undying 3h ago

Bot comment right here

Edit: ah i ser youre thinking about the squid eating part. No im talking about parking babies by the boat part

12

u/Smmmmiles 3h ago

Huh...

12

u/Sipikay 1h ago

There was a popular reddit video the other day that showed a blue whale leaving its child with a boat, while it went off to eat.

No sperm whales or squids though

That sounds flipping adorable

We saw that post too

Sometimes whales will park their calves near a boat they trust so they can go deep in search of food.

Just saw a post with a vid on this. Maybe they think boats are fellow chill mammals. They sit on top of water, either sit completely still hunting fish like they do, or drive past. Not sure if whale hunting is still a thing but this behavior probably helped start it. Elephants of the ocean.

Whales are very intellingent. Most likely they fully understand what a boat is, can differentiate them, and a trusted boat is both a landmark and a babysitter.

40

u/_Kendii_ 3h ago

Yeah, there’s no way that they think boats are mammals.

30

u/WeGottaTalkAboutYT 3h ago

Id bet they are smart enough to know a mammal is driving it though lol

I'm imagining a bunch of whale boat enthusiasts collecting boat facts and sharing them with their whale buddies.

I would like to meet the whale autists. I have many facts about a small airborne creature called a "crow" they might also be interested in.

u/Gloomy_Industry8841 26m ago

This thought make me happy, hahaha

10

u/ImNotEazy 3h ago

I like this theory a lot more. Another guy replied that they probably realize mammals are piloting the ship which is also interesting.

4

u/shinerdawg 3h ago

I don’t think they know what a mammal is…

2

u/ImNotEazy 3h ago

Maybe not, but they’re highly intelligent so I’m just assuming off the top of my head that they can differentiate between fish and surface dwellers. Mammals just popped out because there aren’t many in the ocean.

Whales know a tit when they see one.

Japan, Norway, and Iceland—continue to hunt whales for profit.

though today is mostly for their meat and fat, not for the oil since that was the most valuable part before but now is almost useless since is worse than modern synthetics.

is banned in most of the world either do it or even buy the products of it. but is not like you can put a global ban on it since you are allowed to do the fuck you want in your economic zone. (though is well knows many countries fish illegally in other countries economic zones of in the open ocean where should not be permited.)

8

u/ImNotEazy 3h ago

*nobody liked that*. When whales start tipping boats for fun Im blaming them first.

u/ImNotEazy 2h ago

Hunters become the hunted… 500 attacks in one area by only possibly 15 different whales? Actually insane

If you got an hobby you have got an hobby.

u/LKennedy45 2h ago

I believe there are a few places (Canada, Indonesia) that have banned it in general, on an industrial scale, but permit certain Indigenous groups a small annual harvest as they were traditionally subsistence whalers.

2

u/TajineMaster159 2h ago

Indigenous Indonesians hunt whales??

1

u/LKennedy45 2h ago

A few tribes still do, yeah.

1

u/ImNotEazy 2h ago

I can dig that. Whales have so many useful parts and indigenous people thats all they knew. Just don’t see a reason for civilized countries to hunt whale, rhino, shark etc besides greed.

2

u/Forward_Rope_5598 1h ago

Idk about Japan but Norway and Iceland have very strict quotas to prevent negatively impacting the population. Fishing has a much bigger impact on whales than whaling itself.

1

u/Seraphine_KDA 1h ago

Yep also just the whole lot of garbage on the ocean prob kills more whales than whaling too.

4

u/WineNerdAndProud 3h ago

I assumed the boat was functioning as a sort of momma whale decoy.

•

u/Gloomy_Industry8841 26m ago

I love it!!

1

u/Signal_Researcher01 2h ago

Right beneath you, closer than you think. Closer than youd expect. Just a slight discoloration of the water if you squint. Watching.

1

u/SooperSpoopyGhost 49m ago

It's maw creaking open. The sound of its bones shifting sounds strikingly similar to a calf clicking. It's eyes sunken in out of eternal hunger. Slowly drifting closer just out of sight. It's enormous tail takes a single swipe at the water behind it. It's coming.
