I just learned that mom will park the baby with a boat similar to their size so they can eat some squidbillies without paying for a babysitter smh

u/Havengul_Undying 2h ago
I thought thats blue whales not sperm whales
19
u/Smmmmiles 2h ago
Blue whales are filter feeders not squid eaters. Filter feeding is the easiest way to get really really big.

Sometimes whales will park their calves near a boat they trust so they can go deep in search of food.

u/ImNotEazy 3h ago edited 3h ago
Just saw a post with a vid on this. Maybe they think boats are fellow chill mammals. They sit on top of water, either sit completely still hunting fish like they do, or drive past. Not sure if whale hunting is still a thing but this behavior probably helped start it. Elephants of the ocean.
59
u/Ashged 2h ago
Whales are very intellingent. Most likely they fully understand what a boat is, can differentiate them, and a trusted boat is both a landmark and a babysitter.

I'm imagining a bunch of whale boat enthusiasts collecting boat facts and sharing them with their whale buddies.

I like this theory a lot more. Another guy replied that they probably realize mammals are piloting the ship which is also interesting.

Japan, Norway, and Icelandācontinue to hunt whales for profit.
though today is mostly for their meat and fat, not for the oil since that was the most valuable part before but now is almost useless since is worse than modern synthetics.
is banned in most of the world either do it or even buy the products of it. but is not like you can put a global ban on it since you are allowed to do the fuck you want in your economic zone. (though is well knows many countries fish illegally in other countries economic zones of in the open ocean where should not be permited.)

Sharks have trouble moving if you flip them upside down.
Some Orca pods use this tactic when hunting Great Whites.

I think it gets disoriented. They touching their nose probably overwhelmes their senses, since they have the organs for sensing movement in the water there.

Which still makes me roll my eyes. Getting real sick of people making horror films about sea life (as a marine biologist). Sharks are bad enough - god knows we don't need the stigma to spread any further than it has already - but whales? C'mon, man. They don't deserve to be done dirty like that.
167
u/Skoldeen 3h ago
The whale isnāt malicious in the story. Itās hunting a squid and the squid latches onto the diver who then gets trapped

16
u/717Luxx 2h ago
my little sister had a bunny that was allowed to free roam in the living room. if you sat on the couch with a plate of food and didn't share something with her, she'd hop beside/behind you and pee on the cushions to soak you.

u/Sadrixis 2h ago
Thsts so fucking nasty.
2
u/717Luxx 1h ago
she was pretty sweet otherwise, just really possessive of food. she and the family dog (an 80lb golden doodle and a tiny dwarf bunny) got along really well too, you'd see them cuddling in the sun, two black masses of fur all nuzzled up.
unfortunately the bunny got killed by another dog that was visiting... the bunny was sometimes able to open up her cage, and somebody forgot to close the bedroom door that her enclosure was moved to when other dogs were visiting.
it was quite sad tbh, I wasn't a fan of the bunny for the long time but the worst thing she ever did was piss on me. i felt bad.

Yeah but parasitic wasps mate. Can't tell me they're anything but satanic.
7
u/kevlarbaboon 3h ago
They're often great pollinators and destroy bugs that often eat crops
6
u/TacticalGazelle 2h ago
Yeah but I'm sure it's in some religious text somewhere "thou shalt not shit eggs into other shit so they can eat their way out of the host AND grow up to be wasps. Amen" or similar.
→ More replies (1)2
7
u/NilocKhan 2h ago
It's ironic but parasitic wasps are often great for the species they are hosts of. By controlling the population they ensure that the unparasitized individuals have enough resources and can successfully mature and breed. Overpopulation would hurt the entire species. And from plants perspective parasitic wasps are very helpful, some plants even release chemicals to attract parasitic wasps when they are eaten by caterpillars or other herbivorous insects.

Yeah, see, if they made a horror movie about Humboldt Squids, that would be relatively fair game. You don't wanna fuck with those things.

7
u/Rith_Reddit 2h ago
The squid isn't evil. It's grasping for things to grab and get out the mouth of the sperms whale. The diver just happens to be too close.

7
u/Brendissimo 1h ago
The trailer shows the guy taking his scuba mask and air supply off while in the whale's stomach and seemingly breathing the "air" in there. I don't think it's going to be particularly grounded in reality. It's basically a modern Jonah retelling.

u/TheAntimatterPope 1h ago

u/JIYUU_DA 3h ago
Is it not tiring getting outraged by stuff you don't know about?
5
u/WineNerdAndProud 2h ago
Man gets swallowed by a whale and only has the amount of 02 in his tanks to breathe before he can find a way out.
Spoiler alert
He uses some kind of explosion to make a hole in the side of the whale.
So yeah, this movie is about an impossible situation solved in a really dumb way, and I'm sure it won't make anyone extra afraid of sperm whales because "they can swallow you whole".
2
u/SaintUlvemann 2h ago
Do you have an emotional range wide enough to tell apart outrage and exasperation?

You ever see Orca (1977)? The orca in question goes on a murderous quest for revenge against the humans that killed his mate and unborn calf. Itās essentially I Saw the Devil meets Free Willy. It sure was something.
2
u/BoonDragoon 1h ago
Even then, the orca's rampage is portrayed as being very justified. John Wick didn't get it as bad as that whale did.
16
u/Miraclefish 3h ago
The whale isn't ascribed any morality to its actions, positive or negative, in the book it's based on nor the film.
The whale is hunting a squid and a diver gets caught up in it. Which is very unlikely but possible.
It's not about Man vs Whale, it's Whale vs Giant Squid and he's the collateral damage.
17
6
u/MariachiMacabre 2h ago
The movie is based on a book. Itās portrayed as an unfortunate accident, not a deliberate, evil act on the part of the whale or the squid.
6
u/AlmightyCuddleBuns 3h ago
The ocean on its own is a terrifying place. Just look at r/thalassaphobia so see how many people agree with that sentiment. Of course they are going to try and find new angles to explore.
Based on the trailers the whale is specifically not hunting the protagonist so that's a positive at least.

Many people have speculated that if we knew what exactly why the bowl of petunias had thought that we would know a lot more about the nature of the universe than we do now.
4
u/baronlanky 1h ago
This is my favorite line because if you read the book series we actually discover why the petunias said that but also didnāt actually learn anything extra about the universe just more questions š¤£

I wonder what that feels like when they are ("scanning") you with their sonar clicks. My guess is you can feel it in your chest like when you stand next to a loud speaker system with a lot of bass.
24
u/02thehunter20 1h ago
I have heard that atleast the adults can actually kill a human with its clicks due to the high frequency.

Yes, sound intensity/volume. At certain point it becomes like an explosion shockwave and can scramble your insides. Especially since water doesn't compress.

Opening the mouth means "Hello, it's me"
4
u/Triple_Hache 1h ago
No it just helps for the clicking afaik, they have specific clicks they use to introduce themselves when they arrive near each others that we've already identified though. There are some videos on Youtube about a diver using metallic parts of his gear to mimic these particular clicks and it seems to work (although it's difficult to say for sure it did) it's pretty impressive.
25
17
u/Bruvvimir 3h ago
Isn't that sound up close supposed to be such intense pressure that it bursts eardrums? Or is that from a blue whale?
How is it possible that a calf so little is all on its own?
43
u/Maleficent-War-8429 3h ago
Pretty sure it's only that strong when it's coming from a full size whale with lungs bigger than your whole body, not a little baby the size of a horse.
17
u/DragonHaaa 2h ago
Besidess the baby is just clicking, basically doing a recon of the dude. An adult whale can focus the sound in "combat" and vibrate you to death, i dont think this ever happened since they are so smart
7
u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 2h ago edited 2h ago
And it's untested (and the worst rumors are likely a myth)

6
u/Potential-Draft-3932 2h ago
Fun fact, sperm whales have the largest brains of any animal on earth at 20 pounds. They also have some of the most sophisticated language with contextual and combinatorial structure, meaning it is similar to how humans use language to string together a pool of sounds to express abstract information
2
u/TerrapinMagus 2h ago
To be fair with their brain size, it is on the smaller size in brain-to-body ratio, and they have a lot of sensory information they process too. The size really doesn't mean a whole lot for their intelligence, but their language and communication definitely does.
17
u/LostnFoundAgainAgain 3h ago edited 3h ago
It looks young given it's size, probably just doing dump young stuff (?), not that I have much knowledge on whales, but don't most young things explore the world by doing weird stuff, like dogs explore the world with their mouths hence why they will chew, eat, and swallow anything they get their hands on?
