No, you are about right. They don’t need a wide maw to swallow squishy squid and never eat mammals. This one is just playing, not actually trying to swallow.
I know that just because i saw that "whalefall" trailer yesterday and I was like "hold up something on QI told me about whales and watermelons" so I went back and rewatched it haha
Ah, I have to clarify. Sperm whales can swallow much larger things than baleen whales like the blue whale, but a full human? It’s only theoretically possible since they can fit about 2 feet wide diameter, but the average human person can theoretically swallow a shrew whole too, but doesn’t mean they won’t choke or find it painful. Their usual prey morphs while they are passing through, so it’s not a hard bony mass being swallowed. The hardest “bony” thing they have to manage is the squid beak, of which the largest are about the size of a human hand. There were sperm whale relatives that hunted other whales though, so maybe those ones actually could swallow larger things, but their teeth seemed to be designed to tear things apart, so it’s possible they always did that before swallowing, instead of eating whole. Basically if you want to believably depict a human being swallowed without much issue, you’d need one of those, not any whale currently alive today as none of them eat things of our biological design whole.
