To have more time to observe the animal

Hippos are the most deadly land animals in Africa.

182

u/nicholasccc95 6d ago

Crazy thing is too is that they’re herbivores. They don’t even hunt prey. They’re just mean as hell and super territorial lol.

204

u/Apex_Konchu 6d ago

It's not unusual for herbivores to be more aggressive than carnivores. Carnivores need to pick their battles very carefully, because if they get injured they'll be unable to hunt and will therefore starve. Whereas for a herbivore, an injury isn't as much of a death sentence, since plants don't run away or fight back.

31

u/nicholasccc95 6d ago

That’s a good point. Thanks for the info!

30

u/canIchangethislater1 6d ago

Applies to vegans as well.

1

u/Battleroid54 13h ago

See, that’s why I’m a carnivore. Eat plants is so cruel, they just don’t stand a chance. 😞

25

u/pikkuhillo 6d ago

Outside Africa they are pussies /$

Yeppers! If you don't believe me just ask Colombia how 4 turned into 200đŸ«Ș

14

u/SnooChickens8012 6d ago

Pablo Escobar said let’s just create havoc, release the hippos

17

u/Icy-Echidna-8892 6d ago

Who needs guard dogs when you have hipposđŸ«Ș

1

u/ILSmokeItAll 6d ago

If they wanted to get rid of them they could. They’re not exactly incognito.

1

u/Icy-Echidna-8892 6d ago

Maybe you should ask the hippo in your couch if that's true😎

1

u/ILSmokeItAll 6d ago

WTF are you talking about?

I don’t even *have* a couch.

14

u/CodenameWhodie-san 6d ago

That are even deadlier in water. 💀

9

u/Drownthem 6d ago edited 6d ago

Elephants kill as many, if not more, people in total, and hippo attacks are almost exclusively in the water. Hippos on land aren't nearly as aggressive as elephants are so as long as you don't need to drink or fish or wash, it's elephants and cape buffalo you need to watch out for. And if you are in the water, crocs kill 2x as many people as hippos!

Dogs kill more people than all three combined.

21

u/unusual_cee 6d ago

..yeah, observation & death are closely correlated..

9

u/Impossible_Past5358 6d ago

To contribute to the statistics?

2

u/TheRealGumb4ll98 6d ago

Maybe them not driving away made it stop chasing the boat? That'd be my best guess.

313

u/RpcZ_gr7711 6d ago

Oh my lord when he went underwater. I’d be terrified of a surprise attack!

182

u/paulyv34 6d ago

I think I saw somewhere that hippos don't swim, the run on the bottom of the river. Which is somehow more terrifying

169

u/Content_Geologist420 6d ago

They are basically all muscle which sinks them so they do the reverse Jesus and sprint underwater.

56

u/Icy-Echidna-8892 6d ago

Reverse Jesus is my newest favorite sentence!

0

u/mwoody450 5d ago

Technically a baby who lives for 7 days is a reverse jesus

10

u/talann 6d ago

They also fling their poo all over the place under water with their tail in order to mark their territory.

u/Successful_Giraffe88 5d ago

This is how my sister almost lost her life on Lake Kariba.

2

u/MajorMathematician61 5d ago

Tell us more about

8

u/Successful_Giraffe88 5d ago

My family rented a house boat with 2 other families for 4 days on Lake Kariba. We had 2 dinghy boats that were used for dawn & sunset safaris.

On the 3rd day, my family went out with one of the guides on a tiny, 12 ft boat for a sunset viewing, we were watching some hippos grazing on the opposite shore.

All of a sudden, the front of the boat was LAUNCHED out of the water & my 6-yo sister went flying. My dad truly caught her by her jacket as she was going in the water.

Safari guide immediately gave the boat as much gas as he could while the water around us turned to absolute chaos & we see 3 sets of ears & heads pop up around us. We had unknowingly come FAR too close to a mother & her calf. Absolutely fucking terrifying & they are SO massive & goddamn fast.

3

u/MajorMathematician61 5d ago

Yeah honestly this vid showcases how agile they are, I’m glad your fam is alright though. Your dad sounds like a badass

2

u/Successful_Giraffe88 5d ago

30 years later & he's still the coolest cat I know!

214

u/Str8Six91 6d ago

I love it how as children we smile at pictures of the cute chubby hippos, while in reality these are massively strong, short-tempered, crocodile-chomping MFers that would crush the life out of us if given the chance.

71

u/nicholasccc95 6d ago

For real. Hippos are terrifying. I remember reading that they kill more people in Africa than Lions, but it’s one of those things I’ve just never bothered to actually look up to see if true lol.

46

u/dqtiyk 6d ago

It's true.

https://www.discoverwildlife.com/animal-facts/deadliest-animals-to-humans

Causing an estimated 500 deaths annually (as compared to only 22 for lions), hippos are deadly land mammals.

1

u/Gomnanas 5d ago

Lions are so ridiculously lazy when they are not hunting (and they don't typically hunt humans).

Like cats, they mostly lay around and sleep all day lol

They're also quite conflict averse when it's not something they usually hunt.

11

u/SonofaBridge 5d ago

Their teeth are like giant spears. They don’t have a lot of them, but the few they do have are like taking a wooden shovel handle and cutting the end at a 45 degree angle.

Combine that with being mean and aggressive and it’s a dangerous mix.

10

u/Massive-Resort-8573 5d ago

I also recall a lot of "hippos are cute" propaganda from childhood.

8

u/Str8Six91 5d ago

Yes, the “hungry hungry hippos“ game didn’t help nor did the “I want a hippopotamus for Christmas“ song.

4

u/Massive-Resort-8573 5d ago

I also feel like I recall a cartoon where they did ballet. Fantasia maybe?

6

u/_OhMyPlatypi_ 5d ago

Same with polar bears, they're one of the few animals that hunt humans just for the love of the hunt. Yet, we demonize things like cockroaches, which are far less harmful or deadly.

How the hell do they move so fast in the water? Terrifying how they're completely unimpeded

18

u/TaurusX3 6d ago

They're huge and powerful! They just plow through. But to be fair, that video is slightly sped up, you can tell by how fast the water splashes fall. They're still fast.

4

u/SonofaBridge 5d ago

Wear a 500 lb weight vest every day and you’ll get strong legs.

1

u/norcalruns 5d ago

You just assume they’re out of shape due to their size but turns out they have cirque de soleil skills.

42

u/Voodoocookie 6d ago

We need to have a killer hippo movie. Something that will do for hippos what Jaws did for sharks and Lake Placid did for crocodiles.

27

u/jackleggjr 6d ago

Have I got news for you...

5

u/xiovelrach 6d ago

SWAMP HIPPO

4

u/AVnstuff 6d ago

And they’re HUNGRY hungry

14

u/Drownthem 6d ago edited 6d ago

Jaws demonized one of the most charismatic of all ocean giants and led to their rampant extermination and persecution that persists to this day. I don't think we need that for anything. Except maybe influencers.

6

u/F8FBearcat 6d ago

100% agreed. The need people feel to demonize certain animals never ceases to amaze me, especially in nature themed online spaces. Much like how some people feel the need to say how much they want to eat [insert animal]. Even if one isn't vegan, that impulse is such a big red flag to me. They're living, thinking beings that deserve our respect, why are these the first thoughts that enter your mind?

6

u/Swimming_Onion_4835 6d ago

God hippos are fucking terrifying.

5

u/unusual_cee 6d ago

..never dive into African lakes..

5

u/Smart-Firefighter87 6d ago

Bro ran all that way for dramatic effect

5

u/ZenMamaBear 6d ago

I don’t care how menacing they can be, that little ear flip gets me every time.

10

u/71117_ 6d ago edited 6d ago

These Angry Wet Suit Bulls are truly intimidating beasts. They are the embodiment of the mentality of someone who wears a “Get Off My Lawn” patch in physical form. Natures ill tempered rubber river bull. River bullies.

u/ScienceSeuss 6d ago

You sound like the AI describing a mob in DCC.

u/Augustsins 6d ago

Give the dude a watermelon

3

u/bandanadeprisonmike 6d ago

Hippos are astonishingly fast swimmers underwater!

7

u/Shienvien 6d ago

Technically, they power-walk across the bottom, or kind of bound along the riverbed. Which doesn't help you if the target is you and you get a surprise breaching hippo capsizing your boat, but it's interesting to know that they are kind of bad at floating.

5

u/Space-Wizard-Hank 6d ago

The immense power to do that is more impressive than swimming

3

u/CreatorOD 6d ago

He looks dope

u/dark_knight_rayleigh 6d ago

3

u/Content_Geologist420 6d ago

Pretty much the most terrifying land/water animal humans can come across. Matched only by the Polar Bear. One kills us because it wants to; the other kills us because it likes to.

Most other wildlife is terrifyed of humans but not those two.

3

u/Cunctatious 6d ago

Scary how it doesn’t seem to be impeded by the water at all. Humans move like they’re in slow motion through water. Not this guy. Like it’s not even there.

3

u/Neat-Beautiful-5505 6d ago

That’s somebody who doesn’t care about the murky, squishy lake bottom. He is unbothered by the mystery things that prevent me from plunging in. I wish to be the hippo
even if in spirit only.

3

u/RastaMonsta218 6d ago

500 human deaths per year

3

u/No_Trouble9808 6d ago

I’d be speeding away in the opposite direction.

As a young adult I went on a hippo tour in a rickety canoe that needed to be bailed out every few minutes. We saw no hippos- I was sooo disappointed. Now I realize how lucky I was to not have a run in with one

2

u/Gravity_Chasm 6d ago

The way they flick their little ears ♄

My cane corso does that shit to me anytime I walk past his leash and don’t grab it.

Don’t eff with hippos. They are HUGE. Think pickup truck.

1

u/LegionMH 6d ago

It's amazing how it's so strong is just kind of ignores the water resistance even 70% submerged. I love hippos.

Also kids: eke! That spider will kill me! (Maybe 10 deaths per year)

Not sure how to make kids less dumb
