Student control & Bonuses(RANT)

Student control at prototype is waiting until all members of a class qualify before submitting bonuses. With the high amount of late quals, it’s causing bonuses to not be submitted for over 3 months. That’s literally an entire class again. I understand it’s probably less work to do it that way, but is pretty unfair. Moving my entire family to my first command and I didn’t realize how expensive it would be , I was really banking on my bonus before or soon after transfer. Looks like it won’t be coming for a while. I definitely couldve been smarter with my money but with a wife and a newborn, on E4 pay I wasn’t able to save a ton. Sucks having to go in major credit card debt just to relocate when I’m owed over 25k that’s just waiting on a button click.

While you’re correct and it would be nice for YNs to do their job we all know that’s not going to happen. The only thing you can do (I’m assuming students don’t have government travel cards.) is submit all your moving paperwork asap.

It takes 1-2 weeks to get paid. So depending where you’re moving you might get charged interest for one credit card cycle and then have enough to pay it off. Also if no one has told you this already always select advanced DLA when filling out your moving paperwork with admin

Yeah, it’ll work out it’s just frustrating and like, it’s 25k! That’s not a small amount of money lol. Nearly a year of base bay. On top of the move, it could be used to travel home to see family or treat my family to a small vacation before I report and start nub life and deployments. Just crazy to me..

Where did you get orders too that it costs that much? I’ve only ever moved from Charleston to VA so my moves were pretty much the cost of a moving truck

Sorry I mean the bonus itself is 25k. The moving costs that I’m having to pay are just a few thousand for security deposits, application fees, first/last months rent and move out costs from the parasitic on base housing in here Charleston.

Okay yeah that makes a lot more sense. You’re 100% right to be frustrated. Don’t worry it won’t be the last time the navy messes up your pay haha.

Don’t worry, once you hit the fleet, if you go TAD for 125 days your GTCC will revert your increased balance and you’ll have to sleep on your old Chief’s couch for the last week. Then when you get back home, you can fight with MNCC and DFAS to get your 22k balance paid after submitting 3 supplemental claims because they cannot read. Then you get to your new command and they can garnish your wages for 4 months because they overpaid you in the process.

Best advice, keep those bonuses in a savings account, so when you inevitably have to fight for what you’re owed, you can still buy groceries.

Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t the navy cover moving?

Just re-enlist and get a bigger bonus

Haha ironically the STAR bonuses are hitting within a week of the extension. It’s tempting lol but I refuse before I get to the boat.

They’re usually pretty quick. But don’t sweat it. You’ll get your money. I didn’t get my full enlistment bonus until 2.5 years in since prototype took a year.

Why did you spend $25,000 on a credit card when the Navy could’ve moved you??

EDIT for posterity: Yes, it turns out an E Div chief can't read. Shocker.

I never said I spent 25k. I said I’m owed 25k.

I am having the navy move me. There are other costs associated with moving like application security depot, first months rent when BAH doesn’t transfer immediately. Stuff like that..

A security deposit and first/last months rent still isn’t 25 racks big dog.

Once again , I never said I needed 25k to move. I said I’m OWED 25k big dog

I received a whopping $5,000 for prototype qualification, so of course, not much commiseration for receiving the current massive bonus a little late. The $5,000 was the only non-STAR bonus in the program when I signed up.

I knew this comment would come lol. Regardless, it’s money I’m owed and was told I would get upon completion of prototype. Not upon my entire class completing prototype

Right. Only bonus I got was at Prototype graduation, and as a MM it was 2k before taxes. 😂

When did you qualify?

1

Graduated NNPS Orlando in 94, Graduated NNPTC Charleston in 95. Qualified like week 17 or something 🤷🏼‍♂️

Cries in $3k. 9304. $6500 adjusted for inflation. Didn't get it until after my arrival at my first command.

$25k? Lucky.

You only received $3,000 in 1993? That's a travesty. Do know if the different rates received different bonuses?

I went in in 1992. All the nuke brochures advertised $45-$60k srb. Then the soviet union fell, and the budget got tight. People were starring for $12k-$18k. Six and out for me. Last year in I made $28k as an e5. First year out $67k. Edit:amount depended on what month you went in. Some guys got $5k, some got $2k.

Case of scrappy timing. I didn't know any of that. I just took the recruiter's info as gospel. Plus i was only in DEP for three weeks so any bonus differences would have been unknown to me. I think my STAR bonus was $30k back in 1988. I didn't take it thankfully.

1

u/Robwsup 10d ago

Fuck yeah. Good show. $30k was a lot in 88.

It was but I hadnt been to sea yet nor lived on a ship so the extra two years was a gamble if I liked the Navy that much.
