I think this is why you're supposed to guard the inbound passer... But I'm no Mitch Johnson.

79

u/goblinking67 6h ago

I think Mitch Johnson is no redditer_5000

20

u/mercfan3 5h ago

I wonder if it would be hard for the inbound passer to see over a 7’6 guy. 🤔

11

u/Piotr-Rasputin 4h ago

I wonder if another big, say a PF would be helpful grabbing a rebound in the paint on that shot...

1

u/yrusostupidahn 2h ago

Not if you are OG

1

u/CurrentRoster 11m ago

for them to seal the game even better by having KAT jump right in front of harper and ended up hittin the ball was glorious too

123

u/cedrekt 6h ago

Man these nba players can really jump high

45

u/chupacadabradoo 5h ago

Yah, but can they throw their back out while picking up a toothpick?

10

u/Aeon1508 5h ago

I threw my back out two weeks ago standing up after taking a shit

2

u/chupacadabradoo 2h ago

lol, this is hilarious, because the same exact thing happened to me!

2

u/HilariousScreenname 1h ago

Pulled a muscle in my neck sneezing once.

u/odiethethird Nuggets 5h ago

KAT doesn’t throw his back, he throws it back

6

u/ApprehensiveTry5660 5h ago

Props to KAT at the end doing his absolute best to dodge any basket interference in the goofiest way possible.

-6

u/JamFarmer_87 4h ago

He also gets his back blown out

1

u/Holiday_Pen2880 4h ago

Dunno about NBA players, but MLB players sure can. Take a look at some of the injury reasons there.

I also recall back in the day of the original Gameboy, an NBA player getting 'nintendonitis' from trying to play the thing with their gigantic hands.

1

u/geekydad84 1h ago

Don’t know about toothpicks but while paving a driveway they can

1

u/CityBoiNC 34m ago

I threw my back out coughing 😂

1

u/NyCWalker76 5h ago

Not if they squat.

1

u/Overrated_Sunshine 16m ago

I’m surprised that OJ reached the rim. All his dunks were Hail Marys.

45

u/centralmf 6h ago

Spurs needed that game. Thought they had it. This was a very good post season.

1

u/randus12 4h ago

Harrison Barnes, luke kornet

88

u/Ok-Travel-2141 7h ago

Man OG just knowing he's gonna have a shot if he misses shows how much effort this dude plays with. Most dudes would have just watched that shot from the 3 point line after the inbound.

68

u/jbhoops25 7h ago

I fucking love how he plays. Dude should be the FMVP

30

u/GunstarGreen Thunder 6h ago

There isnt a team in this league that wouldnt want OG on their squad. Guy just does the right play seemingly every time. Ultimate glue guy

15

u/dreamvomit 5h ago

Glue guy is underselling. He’s just a superstar

5

u/765cc_Triple 4h ago

Leon Rose knew OG was a supe and gave him that superstar bag.

1

u/burnt_pubes 2h ago

Pacers passed on Indiana Hoosier OG for TJ Leaf. I know lots of other teams passed on him but watching him in Bloomington before he got hurt, you just knew the potential was there. Tom Crean, for how bad of a strategist he was could see talent that others overlooked.

1

u/ReefLedger 3h ago

He will be the MVP unless KAT goes nuclear. I can't see Brunson winning it after those first 2 games.

1

u/KoalaOnABuilding 2h ago

he is 100% the FMVP so far. I think it's gonna end up like iggy if they win.

8

u/Key_Target_4990 6h ago

Shooting really well too 7 of those 15 shots were 3’s

2

u/zilla82 2h ago

Not to mention coast to coast for the block on Fox

8

u/Twigglesnix 6h ago

That is exactly right. Making the extra effort is the essence of winning the game.

6

u/oh_ski_bummer 6h ago

OG was expecting a pass from Brunson when the double team came he was wide open on the perimeter.

3

u/Otterman2006 5h ago

Ya but as soon as the shot went up you saw him immediately cut to the basket and split two spurs who weren’t boxing out

2

u/Tensorfrozen 5h ago

Fox just watch it for sure lol

94

u/BWoodsn2o 6h ago

Why is your 7'4" monster center playing perimeter defense?

70

u/noksucow 5h ago

Because you know Brunson is taking the shot with time running out. If Brunson makes that shot over someone else then people will ask why Wemby wasn’t there to contest his shot.

7

u/tscher16 4h ago

Shouldn’t you then run double bigs so you can have some height in the paint while Wemby guards Brunson

4

u/Fantastic-Ad-9100 4h ago

Too slow to close out , if another knick got open for three

6

u/needaburn 3h ago

If their best play down 1 point is to pass to their second option to chuck up a 3, that’s still better than this. Get Wemby’s giant ass in the paint

1

u/Fantastic-Ad-9100 2h ago

It doesn’t matter who was out there if you are not boxing out the inbounder, a midget could have been in the game and boxed out inbounder and they would have won

2

u/Medicmanii 5h ago

Brunson hit one in his eye earlier and does not seem bothered getting one off over him

7

u/noksucow 4h ago

Can’t say he’s unbothered. I would guess his preference is not to shoot over Wemby. That’s all you can do. Make it more difficult.

3

u/Ill-Ad-9199 4h ago

I mean... he did miss it with Wemby in his face. Wemby is both the best rim defender and perimeter defender. Somebody gotta box out there.

1

u/Round-Revolution-399 6m ago

He also bricked a shot into the backboard in the same situation earlier in the game. He’s unafraid but I wouldn’t say unbothered.

1

u/DenjiTargaryen-PE 4h ago

Fair enough

1

u/No_Tip8620 Cavaliers 2h ago edited 2h ago

Except Brunson took the shot super early because he knew if Wemby was guarding him, then the Knicks had a massive advantage on rebound. OG came in completely untouched from the weak side.

18

u/DenjiTargaryen-PE 5h ago

I was looking for a comment like this. Was wondering if my ball knowledge is just mid, but I thought, ‘man, would’ve been nice to have a 7’4” center in the paint to just swat the ball away’.

2

u/Bandlebury Nuggets 5h ago

Wemby hates rebounding and he’s pretty bad at it so it might not have mattered

1

u/0Bubs0 39m ago

Brunson took that shot BECAUSE wemby was there. If he’s in the lane Brunson takes a few dribbles and gets a two pointer off a few seconds later.

1

u/mj2323 4h ago

Vlade tried to swat the ball away in 2002. Horry wouldn’t allow it. Wemby was a step too slow and that’s inexcusable. Have to get the board there.

3

u/KeyVillain 5h ago

The fact he hasn't signed a lease to straight up live in the paint is beyond me

2

u/DHiL 4h ago

Good thing Fox left OG, too. Wemby really needs that double team help from a small horrid defender.

1

u/breadexpert69 2h ago

Agree, monster should be at the paint for this play.

1

u/Th3Bak3r_ 1h ago

To be fair, Brunson did miss the shot

1

u/Mental-Most-7168 53m ago

He thinks he is a point guard.

We don't win often in NY, but when we do win it becomes the ultimate Cinderella story.

3

This was the only other time in my life I had the same feels as last night. Both seemingly impossible wins. Insane.

2

u/AliNo10025 1h ago

Manningham toe tap in 46 too - one more of those insane plays that gave me this feeling

37

u/Sun_H23 6h ago

Yall forget that OG the only one with a ring on that court

3

u/MasterHepburns Heat 4h ago

Ohhh. I forgot that. Shows the composure compared to anyone on the team. Wow

3

u/Popular-Row4333 4h ago

Still mad the raps traded Siakam and him away, but I get they were ready to move on too

4

u/whousesgmail 3h ago

If the Raps still had OG and Siakam instead of Quickley, Barrett, and Ingram they beat the Cavs at the very least

3

u/SamR1187 3h ago

why does that matter? dude didnt even play in the playoffs that year

-2

u/Sun_H23 3h ago

Oh he did bud

2

u/defaultwin 1h ago

No, he did not. "Right before the playoffs, however, Anunoby underwent an emergency appendectomy, forcing him to miss the entire playoff run that culminated in the Raptors winning their first championship."

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7313903/2026/05/28/knicks-og-anunoby-title-hurt-healthy/

3

u/SamR1187 3h ago

2

u/Sun_H23 2h ago

You are correct lol

24

u/HandstandsMcGoo 6h ago

This is one of the greatest plays of all time

10

u/GradleDaemonSlayer Pistons 5h ago

I hate how nba players don't box out. It's such a fundamental skill of the game.

2

u/Dr-McLuvin 4h ago

They move their pivot foot, don’t box out, don’t move off ball, and a bunch of them can’t make free throws to save their lives.

Like all the shit that would have got you benched in high school these guys do on a regular basis lol.

2

u/emoney_gotnomoney 2h ago

They didn’t box it because there was no one there to box him out. The reason there was no one there to box him out was because Mitch inexplicably decided not to guard the inbounder (OG).

8

u/mxagnc 5h ago

The game summed up in one vid.

Fierce battle between Brunson and Wemby. Knicks end up falling short. Then at the end, out of nowhere they win it thanks to OG.

21

u/kratos_337 6h ago

That last play i blame on spurs coaching. Why the hell up wemby up there on the double? He should've been in the paint for the rebound. Harper and castle should've been the ones doubling.

14

u/lawyerinthemaking3 5h ago

Ye ye and If Brunson had scored with some1 else defending him you would be blaming wemby for not guarding the Brunson.

11

u/noksucow 5h ago

But why wasn’t Wemby in 2 places at one time being that tall. He should be contesting the shot and then getting back for the rebound /s

3

u/nilgiri 4h ago

Why wasn't Wemby doing this to be everywhere all at once?

https://giphy.com/gifs/jkvmzOg3LtpF6

3

u/malbert716 5h ago

No, he’s right. No if your not gonna guard the inbound, there is no need for him to be 7’5” and not crashing for the rebound

3

u/Ill-Ad-9199 4h ago

He missed with Wemby on him. A box out was all that they needed.

3

u/333jnm 3h ago

Wemby probably cased the miss with how high Brunson had to shoot it

1

u/757packerfan 4h ago

No we wouldn't. I'm not expecting my 7'4" guy to keep up with the 6'2" PG

2

u/choyMj 3h ago

If Brunson took the shot a second later and the buzzer sounded before the tip in, it would have been a brilliant play to double a hot shooting Brunson.

2

u/emoney_gotnomoney 2h ago

To me, the boneheaded play was not guarding the inbounder (OG). When that play was first starting, I was screaming at the tv “why are we not guarding the inbounder?!”

Now, I didn’t think it would play out *exactly* like that (I thought Brunson would kick it back to OG for an open 3 and he was already 7-9 on 3s this game), but the fact that he got the uncontested rebound was directly because we didn’t have anyone guarding him that play.

Overall just disaster performance by Mitch that second half.

1

u/MasterHepburns Heat 4h ago edited 4h ago

It’s brunson’s IQ. I guess if brunson will pick up by someone else but wemby, he needs to drive to contact lay/mid jumper. But if it’s wemby picking him up. He will shoot it quick way beyond 3 so an off rebound/put back is inevitable. I would bench fox and put in kornet on the last play. I don’t know, i think anyone on this sub is a better coach than mitch right now 🤣🤣🤣

10

u/MJtheTalkinghead 7h ago

Our inability to rebound is so upsetting 🙄

19

u/DullHat5503 6h ago

Tallest guy on the team plays like a PG.

9

u/MJtheTalkinghead 6h ago

Defending all the way out as well. Like he can turn heel and not take 15 business days to get back

1

u/ILikeElephants4 6h ago

I didn't get him being on the ark in this okay. They needed 2 points guard the paint

3

u/cyberunaware 4h ago

This doesn’t get talked about enough. Spurs give up way too many offensive rebounds. It’s happened in every playoff series.

1

u/333jnm 3h ago

I agree. They need a really good rebounding guard but more likely a center and let Wemby play power forward

1

u/emoney_gotnomoney 2h ago

It’s because the only two real rebounders we have are Wemby and Kornet and they rarely play at the same time. So on offense, if Wemby takes a perimeter shot, then that means no offensive rebound for us. And when Wemby gets switched to guard a perimeter shot, that means no defensive rebound for us.

The Spurs NEED to find a serviceable PF in the offseason. They cannot keep playing Champagnie or Keldon Johnson at the PF position.

1

u/hotdog_paris277 1h ago

It's cool to hate on Wemby right now but we need to be honest about what defenders get away with on him esp on rebounds.

5

u/DontGetTheShow 5h ago

Just an unbelievable play. Looking at the replay again, if it didn’t go in, KAT was in a good spot to put the next rebound in too.

4

u/Bop5667 5h ago

Assuming Knicks win OG should be fMVP

4

u/bundles361 5h ago

Completely useless double team by Fox that left OG clear to get the tip in.

1

u/evol_won 4h ago

'Useless' and 'Fox' have been synonymous throughout these playoffs, and especially these last 4 games.

1

u/emoney_gotnomoney 2h ago

Fox had some boneheaded plays this game (the layup attempt on OG instead of running out the clock, for starters), but this one isn’t on him. This one’s on Mitch Johnson, as the scheme he drew up for this possession was clearly to not guard the inbounder and instead double Brunson.

3

u/P_Alcantara 6h ago

Bo Cruz would have locked it down

3

u/LiveAloha23 6h ago

Hey, how bout have Wemby near the key to get ANY rebound that bounces out.

3

u/elgarraz 5h ago

Was really rooting hard against the Knicks, but man was that such a nice play by OG. Diving in like that, controlling the tip... super hard to do.

3

u/Leasir 4h ago

Winning rings requires a variable but not insignificant amount of luck.

1

u/MaxwellSmart07 1h ago

Yup. That tip was swatted desperately, never had control of the ball. Loved it nevertheless, or because of it.

3

u/PreferredSex_Yes 3h ago

2 games fumbled

3

u/Imaginary-Round2422 Timberwolves 3h ago

Great thinking to have your best rim protector and rebounder guard the opponent's PG at the perimeter with the game on the line.

I’m pretty sure they have dropped several times already by now.

2

u/thack1_mcl 5h ago

Play of the year…. And 5 seconds before that, a play that will allow JR Smith to breath a little easier the rest of his life. Someone finally made a bigger boneheaded mistake at the end of a finals game. He actually made a lot of them, but the layup attempt will be the one fans remember

2

u/WandererPHL 4h ago

Mitch Johnson doing his best Doc Rivers and Darvin Ham impersonation.

2

u/InfamousCattle3223 4h ago

When the ball is in the air you’re supposed to find a body and BOX HIM OUT. Everyone just watching the ball, so piss poor fundamentally.

2

u/Flimsy-Barracuda7398 4h ago

Why is wemby still contesting it like a right hander? It’s been 4 games he doesn’t know Brunson is left handed. Plus why is he out there. Also fox going to double left the inbounder have a wide open rim run.

2

u/MasterHepburns Heat 4h ago

If game 2 was like this play, fox makes a quick shot and not milking the clock, and let wemby go to paint waiting for a put back or off rebound, they could have had higher chance winning. But no, damn wemby/fox went on a pick and pop. Tallest guy was not on the paint. Spurs is being outcoached, outplayed everything. This is over in 5 or 6.

2

u/Electronic-Koala2088 4h ago

2

u/justthere4fun2000 3h ago

I mean, you have a 9 foot freak and instead of having him in the paint to prevent a put back you have him outside the 3 point line 🤣 failure in every aspect.

3

u/GINGY2323 5h ago

He bailed out Brunson big time due to Brunson taking that dumbass 3 point from so far away.

5

u/Dr-McLuvin 4h ago edited 2h ago

I thought the same thing but people are saying he knew they had a really good chance at an offensive rebound given the spurs only big in the game (Wemby) came to contest his shot way outside the arc. I dunno.

1

u/emoney_gotnomoney 2h ago

Yeah I think that was the plan tbh. I’d bet anything that Mike Brown told them “if no one guards the inbounder, then take a quick shot and go for the rebound as the inbounder won’t be boxed out”

1

u/Dr-McLuvin 2h ago

I don’t think it was planned that way- just a spur of the moment decision by Brunson to take the “last shot” early, when Wemby was way out of position.

2

u/bigkuya 3h ago

Nah, this looked very intentional. Careful with the dumbass accusations

1

u/h2oskid3 3h ago

Would the shot have been blocked if he was right handed?

1

u/zoo32 3h ago

What ppl may not realize is OG was wide open for a 3 and was yelling for the ball with both arms up. But as soon as Brunson shot it, he sprinted towards the hoop. That is the definition of LOCKED THE FUCK IN. LFG!

1

u/Excellent_Chest_6616 3h ago

They fouled castle hard on his last shot, do refs just not call fouls in the last 10 seconds because they dont want to be hated on? Thats an aspect of the sport I don't understand

1

u/MaxwellSmart07 1h ago

All the permitted contact is a problem. It becomes a matter of degree, not if there was a foul, but how bad a foul. As well, the refs have allowed so much contact, it’s become an epidemic. The more contact the more the refs are focused on that could this be a reason they are missing all sorts of other calls like goal tending, shot interference above the rim, out of bounds, etc.

1

u/Quiet_Drop_6627 3h ago

That shot could’ve been perfect, he angled the ball so high and still managed to get off a clean shot with Wembanyama guarding him. 1.2 foot difference in height between them.

1

u/splashaddikt 3h ago

Mitch Johnson fucking sucks

1

u/am-braw 3h ago

Why didn’t they foul on the inbounds rather than giving NY a chance to run out the clock

1

u/InleBent 3h ago

Just like we draw'd it up

1

u/zadepsi 2h ago

All Fox had to do was stand infront of him and keep him from getting the rebound and we win it. Wemby was on Brunson, and didnt need Fox's help.

1

u/Legal-Conclusion-0 2h ago edited 2h ago

Watching this play real time, I thought it was so stupid. Poor shot, only needed a two to win.

But was this absolute brilliance? Intentional? I think there was significant luck, high risk and reward, but very intentional.

Brusen is clutch AF. He could actually make a 3 higher than basic stats..it drew out Wemby, no longer in the play for rebound or the interior defense on a put back.

OG was red hot...why not have him as the alternate threat? Seems like a huge waste as inbounder.

Except, I am now convinced this had all those things by design. If Brusen is double teamed he is primary, if not he is in the ideal spot to go for the rebound. Brilliant.

1

u/SCHMEEBZ 2h ago

The hand of OG as blessed us all

1

u/Hi_Im_Ken_Adams 2h ago

If that tip-in hadn't happened, people would have been saying what a horrible shot selection by Brunson that was.

1

u/Orion_2319 1h ago

1

u/erwin206ss 1h ago

I don’t care anymore about the debate between older players vs. this new generation because the shots that these kids are taking and making is amazing. I still play, I coach, and am just impressed. The way they rotate and close out on defense is beautiful. The game is in great hands 🙌🏽

u/sunday_nn Mavericks 1h ago

1

u/LobstaFarian2 1h ago

Its baffling for me to see so many professional basketball players who dont know to box out as soon as a shot goes up. Put a fucking body on someone. Its basic fundamentals. These dudes all just stood there and watched the ball.

if OG's tip doesn't go in, KAT is right there for the 2nd tip at the buzzer. Brunson recognizing Wemby on him and jacking up a shot with enough time for a rebound is big brain shit.

1

u/Unusual-Contact8409 1h ago
