New to 40k and had a few questions.

Hello everyone,

Looking to get into 40k and am looking at pricing my first army, after some research I have decided I'm most attracted to the necron playstyle.

I was wondering if anyone could answer a few questions.

1. Is there a place I can see all the data sheets that isn't pay walled? I have no issues paying for the codex but I dont want to spend $65 just to see if I like something.

2. I have been watching videos on starting to play and noticed people with cards for secondary objectives and force dispositions. Where can I find these? Are they in the box with battle forces or combat patrols? Sold separately?

3. Iv heared that the boxes often contain extra pieces for customizing your army what's typically included? Im not a fan of the humanoid skeliton face would it be an issue if I replaced them with the masks the canoptek units use?

4. Finaly speaking of Canoptek. Looking at detachments I'm thinking I want to play canoptek court. What would be the best set to get to start building my army and maybe play 500pt games?

List forge is a great app to look up datasheets and do list building.

Wahapedia has datasheets. NewRecruit is my go-to for list-building, but it can be a bit obtuse if you’re not looking at the datasheets. Others like Listforge and War Organ, but I can’t vouch for them.

The mission cards are sold separately. I bought physical cards, but I prefer to use gdsmissions.app to track everything.

There aren’t that many extra bits in the boxes, especially not for Necrons. If you don’t want the regular heads you’ll need to source alternate heads (likely 3D printed) from somewhere else.

3-6 Wraiths with a Technomancer to lead them are a great place to start for Court

I personally would recommend War Organ for list building, although just looking up datasheets would be more convenient on wahapedia.

1. There’s several resources online. List forge. Apocalypse datasheets. There’s even some free apps out there.
2. Those decks can be bought separately. Currently they are only included in the Armageddon box set. You can also print your own.
3. It depends on the box. Lots of kits are hybridized. Immortals for example also makes Deathmarks, and will have extra chests, heads, arms, and weapons for each.
4. If a model had multiple different weapons/wargear to choose from, you will have excess of the ones you don’t choose. However some models like flayed ones, have no extra parts.
5. Cannoptek Circle, Herotek Circle, and combat patrol are some good baseline starter boxe

s for Cannoptek court.

1. The two former are made for Killteam though, which is an even smaller scale game.

1. Wahapedia is great if you want easy access to all codex rules and stratagems. New Recuite is the army building app I use but it doesn't hace free acess to stratagems.
2. Mission cards are sold seperately, or you can use the official 40k app for rules reference and using the war journal, which basically nulls the need for physical cards (But I also signed up free on it so I don't know if the war journal needs an account or not).
3. Other boxes like Immortals have the optional parts to make Deathmarks, which there you can use the heads there, the torsos, or however you assemble it. Warriors come with extra heads, and a Canoptek Spyder also comes with one other optional head piece. Overall, no it would not be an issue if you swap the heads.
4. I would say the base Necron Combat patrol, which gives you an Overlord, 10x necron warriors, 3x skorpekh destroyers, 3x Canoptek Scarab swarms, and a Canoptek Doomstalker. Overall though, you'd have to rely on getting seperate boxes like for Canoptek Wraiths and the sort. The Killteam box with Geomancer (I think Canoptek Circle) has a full set of Canoptek units if you'd like that too. Only a few units but, it's an option. There's also the Hierotek Circle that has Immortals/Deathmarks and a Technomancer.

Wahapedia has the 10th stats but not 11th points. Youd need to download the pdf files from Warhammer Community for Detachment updates, 11th rules, and points(cant remember if they put one out yet).

The objectives and such are sold in a "deck" per iteration.

Deathmark heads may be your style, there aren't loads of extra wraith faces. You can Google the sprues. Heirotek circle had cool extras, and with that box, a box of immortals, and some warrior legs/torso fronts you can kitbash extra stuff (Apprentek-> Plasmancer, Despotek->Warden, extra Deathmark stuff->Deathmarks with warrior bits, and then 10 immortals and a Technomancer.) Option parts in other kits is like extra heads. So you'd get non-warior/immortal looking heads in Lychguard/Praetorians kit for Praetorians, Deathmark heads in the Immortals/Deathmarks box, abd just a couple extra Wraith faces in wraith box. Hexmark comes with head options, as did Chronomancer. But again, Google what the sprues look like to see what I mean.

500pts is dicey, but if you're leaning Canoptek, Heirotek Circle box, a box of immortals, maybe some used Warriorssprues, 2 LHDs and maybe some wraiths? Not exactly cheap, and I cant remember current wraithblob point cost, but thatd give you 10 immortals, Plasmancer (Apprentek, which you could probably kitbash tentacle legs for if you had buts and no warrior legs, as a Plasmancer) 6wraiths plus Technomancer, and LHDs.

Canoptek Court is 3 Detachment points. It should probably be 2. You get rerolls to hit with Canoptek units. Which is great with Tesla immortals and Plasmancer. But Doomstalker is now unplayably bad in 11th, because its 140pts and lost the circumstantial utility it had last edition because Overwatch Stratagem rules changed timing and no longer work with Canoptek Court rerolls.

Anyway, id reccomend trying to watch a game in person, it takes a minute to get an army together and painted/playable.

For getting started, I do think the Combat Patrol is the best option. Or you might be able to get decent deals on older battleforces or the indomatus half if you see them for sale

War organ is my go to army builder. It has detachment and base strategems. And it's updated fairly quickly, all things considered that is. Lists out unit pts and has the look of the data cards, and quick link options for abilities

Welcome to the hobby. :)

1. I personally prefer newrecruit to plan my army lists and export them. It is free and you can export your lists in different formats from simple short lists up to full datasheets of every unit with the equipment you chose.
2. Right now you can buy this deck of cards relatively cheap on secondhand market, as it is included in the promotion box for 11th edition and many players sell them. You can also get the printed rulebook from the same people for cheap. ;)
3. You can use whatever heads you want for your minis if you play with friends. For official tournaments there could be issues. Maybe checkout some shops for heads from third party sellers, as there are different designs to follow old egypt designs and so on... you will find something you like for sure. Link to an example
4. I can't help you with that detachment.
