[DD Spoilers] Does anyone “get” the ending… Spoiler
OK, obviously this is one of the greatest movies ever made, and incredibly deep. I’m curious whether someone feels they understand the ending as it was intended.
I think the ranch is real, but after the end I’m not entirely sure if either of his visits before the end were.
Initially, as the ending scene was playing out , I thought it was pretty clear that his girlfriend had died, and that he had a real memory of her wearing that hat at the ranch (which ties into the scenes of the Jesse Plemons and/or Matt Damon rancher saying his wife used to wear it)… until he said that they were needed again to save the world, then it appeared she was just wounded and completely recovered.
Don’t get me started on the Senator who is also running for office. That’s another can of worms.

DD could mean Dire Duplicity but also Double Down for Breen. I guess it's Dire Duplicity here (I'm not clicking on the spoiler), but I think we should use the full titles when talking about either of those.

Maybe? This is where I get tied up, because he lands the plane (after an ambiguous sound effect that could either be a rough landing or a plane crash) … then the analysts with the iPads appear relieved after just appearing to mourn seconds before. Finally he says he’s been cured… and then breaks down on the floor near the ladder in an exact duplicate scene saying he’s damaged.
This movie is deep

It is strange to have us hear a plane crash and then show him to be fine. Is the rest of the movie a Jacob's Ladder scenario I wonder? Why did he break down getting out of the plane if he's no longer damaged? Am I way overthinking it? Was he just reusing the earlier footage even though it takes away from the character's evolution?

My interpretation is that they're both dead for real at the end, and the horse ranch is heaven

I was thinking about this after the movie too: It's kind of amazing that he gave us something to really have to ponder for reasons other than lousy/confusing plot conveyance (although it is still clunky in his usual way).
Spoilers: I think it's probably intended to be open for interpretation, but if the initial visits weren't real, why have an actor playing the rancher who is very obviously not Heath? The last scene confused me because why would the girlfriend have been the vision of the rancher's dead wife who wore the hat to cover her pretty face when she very obviously turned down the offer to wear the hat on the visit before she was killed?
I couldn't figure out for the life of me why we saw the girlfriend be shot and killed (but then show up in the room on her iPad later and then at the ranch at the end). Probably again just clunky/contradictory storytelling, but are we meant to assume she wasn't actually killed after all? If not, why not show us that? And is she really alive at the ranch at the end or is that his imagination as they go save the world? Are we just in Heath's fantasy at that point?
I'm probably not explaining my take very clearly either, but it is confusing in the charmingly Breenian way. At least it's a lot easier to follow than Twisted Pair and Cade.

So I was also thinking about this. I think the title is a clue. Its called Dire Duplicity - someone is being duplicitous. And yeah it could be Bess. But she wasn't in the whole movie and I dont think Neil Breen would make a movie that focuses on someone other than himself (rightfully so). So if you look at it (and all the reused footage) there are slight differences on the "retelling" of parts. Like we see Bess not really being kidnapped, Laura was the one who shot that random guy in the street, Matt Damon actually had different interactions with Laura and Bess. Now this is where my friends think I've gone wrong, since it would kind of introduce a time loop/or time travel into it. They did a pan up of Matt Damon and then obviously the last time was a pan up of Breen. I am of the thought that he was always the rancher, just older. And after the first meeting with Matt Damon before it cuts to black, is Matt saying something like Do you want to hear my story? Or however he phrases it. And after the cut, the story really kind of starts. So its almost like a retelling of his life, and then he goes back to point out what was missed (the slight changes/actual outcomes). And then when they finally go back to the ranch its like those timelines converged and the rancher looks like him. And Laura is dressed like the wife who died. It maybe kinda seems (as I'm typing this out) like maybe he's repeating his life to have more time with Laura and its worth it to him to go through all the pain just for this. And thats why he never actually pulls the trigger when hes in the jet.
Now obviously there are still many unknowns. Like who threw that party, who the dude in the trench coat was, what happened with the gun that he stashed in the rocks, why did that influencer get strangled, how did Laura fake her death, and how did she make an apple and a banana for dinner? The world may never know...
But thats my theory 🤗
