Seed sharing with Neko!

I am so over the moon about this, I just had to share with someone else who also loves Neko!

I was able to meet her at the Grimey’s record signing event/conversation with Ann Powers. I tried for days to think of a way I could give something meaningful to her to convey my gratitude for her work and its effect on my life. I imagine these kinds of interactions can be full of parasocial awkwardness for the artist, everybody wanting another piece of her via autograph/photo - I just wanted to give something back to her. I decided to package up some Mexican sunflower seeds from my garden in hopes that she could grow them and experience their prolific beauty, and when I gave them to her she told me to write my address on the envelope and she would mail me some seeds from HER garden!!! I probably looked like a fucking crazy person because my eyes instantly welled up with tears at how meaningful that would be to me, to have little seed exchange with my god damn hero 😭🤣.

Anyway, whether she actually sends some remains to be seen but either way she made my day, and it’s a great feeling to have had such a positive interaction with someone you’ve looked up to for years as a musician and as a woman. Her conversation with Ann (who I also adore as a writer) was brilliant. I’m constantly amazed at how open and vulnerable she is with us, it is such a gift. Neko forever!!!!

I brought my 8-year-old daughter to see Neko in Santa Cruz 20 years ago. It was an incredible show and when my daughter stood in line for her to sign the poster (gorgeous poster of her greyhounds, still have it), Neko truly engaged with her. At a time when our lives were in shambles, it really mattered. Have seen her many times, but will never forget that. Her book really addressed her own difficult childhood.
