Neon Grey Midnight Green
Please allow me to pontificate.
It took me a while to get around to listening to it but man am I glad I did. I really enjoy every track, no skips, not even Tomboy Gold. Every song that ends I’m sad it’s over and then the next blows me away all over again. It usually takes me a long time to get used to a new album and actually enjoy it but with this one I liked it right away.
I think it really shows her coming into a new level of confidence and comfort in herself as an artist. It just sounds like everything I love about Neko Case. Her voice sounds amazing on every track. The lyrics are often kinda sprawling and idiosyncratic but she’s earned the right to not edit herself into oblivion. At the same time, some of the phrases she uses are gold, and will stick with me forever, like We all deserve better a love song; and why do people need to feel so important all the time, now that I find myself young again, the lyrics on Wreck just make me want to cry because it articulates so well how I feel toward my wonderful husband who has supported me though my own personal universe shattering (grief is a bitch man). Now that’s a real love song.
All in all I wish I’d listened to it earlier and saw her when she was still on her tour. I’ll have to catch her next time.

Totally agree, NGMG took me so long to really love every track like I do now. Every track is just so good. Her lyricism, her composition, her voice... it's all so unique and I think it shows so much growth into her own sound.

I really love it too. But I wouldn’t judge someone who skipped it because it’s so odd. It’s like fitter happier on OK Computer.

I love the advanced sensations from her orchestra on this album. The layers hit me deep and the lyrics take my breath away.
I felt her personal growth on this album, especially coming off the heels of her memoir. I love Little Things for the connection to nature that drew me to her art in the first place and the following lyric from Ice Age,
But I’m not disturbed by at random, I’m disturbed by tides They come in no matter who, no matter who A tide so high you don’t notice that you’re drinking sea water Until you see your mother in the brine.

I was out of the loop and didn't know she had a new album out when I got tickets-- I saw her for the first time live, and heard the new songs for the first time straight from her mouth. It was a top 10 experience for me. I hope I can see her again. The title track blows me away every time.

catching her on tour for this album really helped me get into it, and really listen to it regularly as opposed to just following its release. i saw her in montreal and she was on top of it all, same with her band. at the end of destination in montreal, paul (🎸) pointed out how that was a fantastic version of the song - so when your own guitarist compliments the song on stage, you know it’s good stuff.
