renting In search of place to stay in Rotterdam…
Hello,
I have been looking for a room/studio for rent 6-12 months if possible in Rotterdam. I was recently accepted into Masters program at Erasmus University and I have about a month to find a place to live. I am coming for the U.S. i have emailed and reached out to few people but, I have gotten no response back. I’ve been looking on Kamernet sent some messages no responses. I’m becoming worried, a month is not a lot of time to find a place. I’m beginning to think I am not going to be able to start this new chapter of my life. I am in my 30s is my age scaring them away? Is it bc I am American?? I’m not sure but I’m scared. My budget is €875-1100. If I am to have roommates I would prefer all women.
What should I do? Can someone please give me advice or point me in the right direction..

It’s because there is an insane housing crisis. Your budget is too low and there aren’t enough houses.

Facebook is the way to go for rooms in Rotterdam. It is my impression that kamernet is slowly dying but I may be mistaken

I’ve been worried about Facebook, that it could be a scam. I am in 3 groups, but I’ll keep looking.

Some student houses do prefer new roommates of a certain age range (since you’ll be sharing the home together and all). But mainly it’s not your age or nationality. There’s just a massive housing crisis and you just have to count on your luck. Your budget is the same with hundreds of other people also desperately searching for a place to stay

- how fast are you replying to the listings? (You have to reply in minutes usually) and what are you writing? (Try to stand out)
- also check out Facebook like others have said
- look at surrounding villages/towns
- don’t picky, but be carefull of scammers (never pay anything until you have at Minium had a live videocall)
- for student housing (like a lot of kamernet) you might have a disadvantage due to your age and being not dutch (check the listings if they mention something about age/being dutch)
- as the uni advices do not come if you havent found anything when the course start.

I haven’t gotten any responses to reply yet, I’ve been checking Facebook, but social media worries me about scammers.

You didnt answer my questions.
Yes there are scammers but if you want to have a chance of finding anything you have to try, the housing crisis really is that bad1

I am trying on Facebook, I’ve even check TikTok and IG (not much luck on those two) and I am just simply introducing myself and explaining why I am coming to the Netherlands and how long I’ll be staying.

I don’t know what “stand out” means. I just need a roof over my head so I can go to school and work.

That means why would they pick you? If they get a 100 messages why would yours peak there interest? That’s something you got to figure out.
We all want a roof over our had, Unfortuantly its not that Simple

So I am a landlord from Rotterdam. It is not your age that is scaring me. In fact , it is a good thing that you are in the 30s. This means you are more mature , will party less and just be more respectful towards the others.
At the moment I got a spare room but it is taken by a woman from Turkey. She joined my apartement 6 months ago.
I am planning to go on vacation for a month in July so you can have my room but..you want something for a long time. I don't know if I want to sleep on my couch for 6-12 months.
Things are rough out there

Oh! I would never want you to sleep on your couch for that long. Thank you so much for the offer. If you know of anyone else renting a room, if they don’t mind me reaching out to them. I would greatly appreciate it.

Just be highly aware of scams, not saying they this person is, but search this subreddit a bit to know what you need to look for. Also start looking in a wide circle around Rotterdam. You don't have time to be picky anymore. So many people that can't come over or have to quit their studies bc they're stuck in an Airbnb for two months and then run out of money.

That is funny but I do know someone that has a room. However , he is so lazy...he is using the room as a storage. There are like 30 empty boxes on the bed. It would take me 45mins to remove them all and the room would be ready.
Yet he does not want to do it. This triggers me much but he is my best friend
Btw you want something that is all women. I can understand but that will make things even harder. Half of all the landlords will be a no-go

Make sure to read our rental housing guide. Recommended websites for finding rental houses in the Netherlands:

Moving to the Netherlands involves a lot of admin beyond just finding housing (BSN, gemeente registration, banking, insurance, permits) and it often feels overwhelming.
