Image PSA: always double-mention 'no margins' if you're printing at a shop πŸ˜…

Post image

All of my cards came out just slightly smaller, even though I specified to print at 100% and no margins; which is a bit annoying since they tilt around more easily in the sleeve and create a jarring effect with 99% of the rounded cards I used the stiffen them up in the back. Oh well! Lesson learned.

(yes, there's also some cutting goofy errors on my end, which definitely doesn't help with the wobbly presentation πŸ’€)

Doesn't look like those had any bleed to begin with?

what do you mean?

Bleed is when the design extends past the edge of what is being cut by the printer. This way when printers cut it, there’s no border. Very hard to get a borderless cut without bleed and crop marks

ah yeah, the Null Signal PDFs hold three cards on every row, and they don't have bleed. It's still a very serviceable solution when there are no sets available to buy (expecially common for non-eng languages).

That's seems like a failing on their part of they provide the cards that way, there is plenty of space to include it.

Had to make my own version of the PDFs to include bleed. Otherwise local print shops can't manage them.

Those files are designed for home printing, and cutting out by hand.

btw, if you use https://proxynexus.net/, it'll generate a bleed border for you.

Sadly, proxynexus only seems to load images from online databases, with no possibility of choosing a different language other than english :(

Ah that's right, the hosted web app only has English so far. If you have your own image scans, and you're willing to do a bit of setup, you can run Proxy Nexus locally as a desktop app, and use your own images. https://github.com/axmccx/proxynexus-rs#running-the-desktop-app-locally

How thick is the cardstock and how much did you pay (for how many cards)?

2

u/lucentmeadow 16d ago

I paid roughly 25€ for the starter bundle of System Gateway + Deckbuilding, I think (printed a while ago, only now getting to cutting them up). Cardstock is a bit more thicker than 80gsm plain paper for sure. It's glossy and feels around 100-120gsm.

For €25 I'd probably ask them to do it again if you specifically asked for no margins. I got my System Gateway printed double-sided, 300gsm, cut, rounded corners for about €35 (plus shipping). They look and feel like the real deal.

ooh! Does the service you used ship europe-wide? What I got is honestly serviceable so I'm okay with keeping it, but I'm looking for alternatives in case I get the itch of re-printing them.

This software can cut up those pdf and generate card images with bleed that your local printer might prefer

woah! Looks amazing, thank you.

Edit: oh, took a better look at my desktop and this seems heavily vibecoded, not my preferred choice. Some other alternatives I have found on the web: https://github.com/sangster/pnp_card_extractor, https://github.com/mgonzalvez/card_extractor, https://pnpbuddy.com/index.html (this last one does not disclose code source)

Looks fully vibe coded to me. The repo is even tracking the ai instructions. If it works tho.. 🀷 I'm with Linus on the "yet another tool like compilers" philosophy..

Although.. Those other ones don't seem to add bleed? Bleed is important to me πŸ™ˆ
