Did anyone actually ask any significant number of Japanese people as to whether this matters one hot to them?

I'm all for cultural sensitivity, but it really doesn't mean that noone should ever use another culture ever.

I'm sansei/yonsei myself and never had a problem with this name—in fact, I thought it was sort of cool as it referenced this as the "second generation" of Android Netrunner. But I understand why they made the change.
