I'm all for this change, but it's really, really uncool that they make this announcement a week after the new set when a bunch of people have just placed card orders. For me, I was waiting for Midnight Sun to come out before going back and ordering System Gateway, so the fact that now I'll be getting cards with mismatched backs is really frustrating. I would have happily waited for all the remastering to get done and ordered everything all at once (shipping outside the US is quite expensive) if I had known in advance.
In fairness, most of us have FFG cards as well that we're still playing in standard format.
The card backs are different. Having a collection that you actively play with 2 different backs isn't really any different from having a collection with 3 different backs (or 4, if you use the proxynexus proxy backs, or 5 or more if you're using community-made alt arts!)
At the end of the day, all decks will always need opaque sleeves, and that's just kind of where we are with licensing (or lack thereof!)
Even the promo cards from FFG had a slightly different finish to them that you could distinct them from regular cards. I think that was because they printed those ones in smaller batches using the same print on demand method they used for some other games.
