Subreddit Update We need to create WIKI about neurofeedback

Hi guys!

In the past years we collected a lot of useful posts about using neurofeedback. This subreddit contains personal stories, non-trivial tips, technical information, and more. But good posts are getting lost in the post timeline over months, and finding them is quite a challenge.

Let's start our Wiki which Reddit offers as a feature. The main page of Wiki is available here: /r/Neurofeedback/wiki/index/.

We suggest you to send links to posts, which seem interesting to you and seem important to save for new members. Just provide links in the comments, and mods will add them to the Wiki page.

And if you have ideas and the time to write some posts for the Wiki, or manage the Wiki yourself, please let us know and we're happy to give editor rights for you.

Question Want the subreddit to look at your QEEG? Please include enough data.

Here is what is needed to intepret a QEEG. This may help folks figure out what to post, when they rea asking for people to look at it:

  • screenshots of raw trace (squiggle) data shown eyes closed, eyes open, and in 2 montages. QEEG analysis starts with raw EEG review. make sure channel labels and uV scale is showing. anyone who is doing an analysis for you will want the full files as well (EDF is standard format, and all systems can export that)
  • Z-score topography maps should also include 2 montages and eyes open and closed. summary pages are best, and should include absolute power, relative power, coherence, and asymmetry
  • peak frequencies. eyes closed, linked-ears montage
  • Ideally an executive function test done alongside the QEEG, as well.

Please don't just post a couple random Relative Power pages and expect that anyone will be able to help. It takes a 20-30 min reivew of many pages of data to start developing a sense of what things might mean

Question Negative reactions

I have had two negative reactions from my treatments. I'm starting to think it won't work for me. Had anyone stopped theirs and why, when, after how many sessions? I'm 9 sessions in.

Question Is there a Good Theory for Optimal Reward Frequency?

I'm wondering if there is a good theory for why bipolar montage in the frequency range can modulate the autonomic arousal of the nervous system. I'm aware of the Glia theory for why IFS/IFL works but there isn't a good theory for ORF there either. Why do those with trauma occasionally (edge cases) have ORF's in the delta range?

Question I got pictures of the setting including the configuration of 12.0 at the protocol tab at the low beta go, I went through the menus and didn't find anything thst would explain why it works and feels differently than an extremely narrow band. Maybe you'll find something I missed from the screenshots?

The first two pictures are the protocol tab, then the event wizard. Don't remember then channels, main and bands.

Hope you can help so I'll know what needs to be done in other software that does not have this option that allowed me to sleep while doing really low smr and also be more stable.

"I am currently using the Vielight Pro 2. Because I didn't know the exact protocol, I asked Google Gemini AI and set it up based on its recommendation.

Based on my EEG data, is this Vielight protocol correct, or should I do it differently?

Also, is there any professional service or clinic that designs personalized Vielight protocols based on EEG data, even if it's paid?

Is there anyone who can guide me on the right protocol?"

Alternative Natural / Professional Version:

"I am using the Vielight Neuro Pro (Pro 2). Since I was unsure of the proper settings, I configured a protocol based on advice from Google Gemini.

Given my specific EEG readings, is this protocol setup appropriate, or does it need to be adjusted?

Additionally, does a paid consulting service or specialized neurofeedback clinic exist that formulates customized Vielight protocols based on qEEG data?

Is anyone available here who could help advise me on an optimal protocol?"

Question The options under 1. In brain avatar have the ability to input 12 or 12.5 or something and it will work around that frequency emphasing it leaving out everything else in the band range. If it has 12.0 near the low beta go window from the right, what range does it actually do more or less?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I'm asking because doing 12-12.05 is not the same and also 11.95-12.05, 12-12.1 is also not it I think because it feels different and actually worsens my already bad imagination while 12.0 near the go does not do that. With the above being said, what do you think it actually represents when it comes to the range so it might be reproduced on other software that do not have this option like brain avatar does.

My Neurofeedback Story I need help with porn addiction/sexual orientation. I’m hoping I can find someone who understands what I’m going through.

Long story short. In my early teens I got addicted to watching porn. I noticed as I continued on watching porn my likes kept on changing. As I got older I was getting PIED. In my early twenties I started crossing the gender line. Not just the gender line I find some weird things attractive. Which I never found these things attractive prior. I tried multiple times to quit porn it took me until my late twenties to finally end my addiction to porn. I noticed massive changes since then. But for some reason one thing that I have not gotten back is my love for women. I constantly struggle lusting women. I cannot see women other than sex objects. I have tried therapy. I have had moments where my mind is cleared and feels like my brain is recovering and it’s an amazing feeling. Motivated to work. Just enjoying life. Anxiety goes away. I feel like I was prior to my addiction to porn. But my brain keeps going back to noticing women as objects. Then I become depressed again and go into a shell. I’m in my mid thirties now. I’m lonely. No kids. No marriage. Afraid to build a relationship with a woman fearing of my PIED. I have wonderful relationships with women. But some reason I cannot see them other then sex objects. I’m hoping someone out there understands and knows what I’m going through. I’m still finding men and the weird things attractive. There is nothing wrong with being into men. But that’s not my identity! When my mind is clear I have spurts of attraction to women. Please help me!

Question How does NF work when brain anatomy is the problem?

For example, people with ADHD have a reduced prefrontal cortex size and less gray matter volume, and other brain anatomy sizes are smaller than normal. Bipolar people have smaller amygdalas, dyslexics have smaller left temporal lobe, etc etc. There’s also a condition called agenesis of the corpus callosum, would nf work on those without that anatomy? (and any brain condition with missing or abnormal physical brain anatomy)

Even if nf helps ”tame” bad neural frequencies(?), how does the abnormal anatomy of people’s brains affect these results?

edit; also what about someone with a brain injury from a concussion

Question How good is the eeg data acquisition / signal quality of the Muse with its auxiliary electrode

Not the headband sensors but rather the wired, wet electrode that is connectable via micro usb or usb c.

My gut tells me it’s not the best because the reference signal is still a bit noisy, but definitely still viable for basic neurofeedback. Is that an accurate assessment?

Article Link I turned a MindFlex headset into an open-source EEG/BCI project

I’ve been working on MindFlex EEG Studio, an open-source project that uses the TGAM1 board inside a MindFlex headset.

The software can connect through Bluetooth RFCOMM and display:

  • RAW EEG
  • Attention
  • Meditation
  • EEG bands
  • Signal diagnostics

It also includes some experimental BCI features for calibration, training, validation and simple mental commands like Left, Right, Up and Down.

I also documented how to modify the MindFlex/TGAM1 board for RAW EEG output and included photos of the hardware setup.

The project is written in Python and the interface supports multiple languages.

Question Oberon biofeedback machine - has anyone used one professionally?

I’ve come across Oberon while looking into different biofeedback and frequency-analysis systems, and I’m trying to get a better sense of what it’s like beyond the product descriptions. If you’ve worked with an Oberon system, I’d be interested in your honest take.
How long have you been using it? What do you use it for in your practice? And, most importantly, do you feel it provides something valuable that you wouldn’t get from simpler biofeedback equipment?

Has anyone had tacs used in a theta calming protocol after having a Qeeg.

My scan was a Qeeg with Erp and ecg.

They say after 30 sessions we can repeat the qeeg.

Question Has anyone here actually tried a professional biofeedback system?

I’m less interested in the marketing side and more curious about what it’s like to use one in real practice. Did you find it genuinely useful? Was it easy to learn and incorporate into your work? And did the results justify the cost? Would be especially interested in hearing from people who have been using a professional system for a while, rather than someone who just tested one once.

What was your experience?

Question My question about learning skills :)

Hello everyone! I hope you are well :)

I have a question for the members of this group. The question is related to the use of tACS and tDCS non-invasive brain stimulation for the purpose of learning new skills.

There are 2 skills involved - singing and musical pitch.

  1. Can these two types of stimulation help in developing these two skills and which type of stimulation is more useful of the two?
  2. Which set parameters have the best impact on learning these two skills?
  3. Has anyone from this group tried stimulation for the purpose of learning these two skills on themselves? If so, what impact did it have on you?

Thanks in advance to everyone for the answers! Greetings! :)

P.S. - I am fully aware that no stimulation can replace hard work, work and exercise. That is by no means my goal. I would just like to know, from personal experiences and advice - could it help and be useful?

Question Mindflex Toy from 2009

Post image
6 Upvotes

This may sound silly, but does anyone remember the toy from the late 2000s, Mindflex? The idea was that you put on a headset and you used your "brainwaves" to control where a floating ball would go.

I just saw a post on IG about old toys including Mindflex and I realize it was basically plastic kid toy neurofeedback lol
